Windows Sandbox Gets Much Safer When You Disable the Conveniences Microsoft Leaves On

Windows Sandbox is isolated, but networking and clipboard sharing are on by default. Here is which defaults to turn off, how to write a .wsb file, and what the settings do not protect against.

Windows Sandbox is disposable and isolated from your main Windows installation, but several of its default settings deliberately connect the test environment to your host: networking, clipboard sharing, audio input, and, when you add them, mapped folders. The safest approach is to turn off every integration the test does not need and to keep only the narrowest access the task requires. Doing that reduces what an untrusted program can reach. It does not make a malicious file harmless, and it is not a guarantee.

Which defaults widen the exposure

Microsoft Learn’s configuration documentation for Windows Sandbox lists the following defaults. Two of them, networking and clipboard redirection, are the ones most people never think about, and they are the ones that most often matter for an untrusted file.

Setting Default What it exposes Turn it off when
Networking Enabled Access from the sandbox to the internal network The test does not need to download or call anything
Clipboard redirection Enabled Copy and paste between host and sandbox You do not need to move text or files by copy and paste
Audio input Enabled Host microphone input The program does not record or process sound
Video input Disabled Host camera input Leave it disabled unless the workload needs a camera
Printer redirection Disabled Host printers Already off; no change needed
Protected Client Disabled Adds AppContainer Isolation layer Enable it for stricter isolation if copying files in or out is not required
vGPU Enabled on non-Arm64 devices Virtualized graphics acceleration Disable for the Microsoft sample configuration; rendering falls back to software and may be slower
Memory Basic launch, 4 GB maximum Memory available to the sandbox Set only if the test needs more or less memory

The configuration page also states that disabling networking can decrease the exposed attack surface. Microsoft’s guidance is more specific about the risk itself. Its configuration documentation states: “Enabling networking can expose untrusted applications to the internal network.”

Turning off each integration, one at a time

Each integration carries a different kind of risk and a different cost. Treat them as separate decisions.

Networking

Networking is the most consequential default for an untrusted program. With it enabled, the program running inside the sandbox can reach resources on your internal network. Disable it when the test does not need to download updates, install packages, or contact a server. Many installers fail without a network connection, so if the file must fetch dependencies, you will see that failure rather than a silent success.

Clipboard redirection

With clipboard redirection on, you can copy text or files from the host and paste them into the sandbox, and the reverse. That convenience is also a path for data to move across the boundary. Disable it when you do not need to transfer anything. Copy and paste will then be restricted between the two environments, so plan to move any needed content another way, such as a read-only mapped folder.

Mapped host folders

A mapped folder gives the sandbox direct access to a folder on the host. Microsoft warns that mapped files and folders can be compromised by sandbox apps and can potentially affect the host. Writable changes persist after the sandbox closes, so a writable mapping is not temporary in the way the rest of the sandbox is. If a file must be supplied for testing, map the narrowest useful folder and set it to read-only. Do not map your whole user profile or a folder that holds documents you care about.

Audio and video input

Audio input is enabled by default, and video input is disabled by default. Microsoft notes possible security implications of exposing host microphone or camera input. Keep both off unless the workload needs them. A file that only parses documents or runs a script has no use for either device.

Protected Client mode

Protected Client runs the sandbox under AppContainer Isolation, which Microsoft describes as providing credential, device, file, network, process, and window isolation. It is an additional layer, and it is disabled by default. The trade-off is convenience: Microsoft notes that it may restrict copying files in or out of the sandbox. Use it when the test does not depend on moving files across the boundary.

How to configure Windows Sandbox for a test

Windows Sandbox reads an XML configuration file. You can control vGPU, networking, mapped folders, a logon command, audio input, video input, Protected Client, printer redirection, clipboard redirection, and memory through it. The steps below assume you use a plain-text editor such as Notepad.

Rank #3
  1. Open Notepad and create a new file.
  2. Paste a configuration like the example below, adjusting the host folder path to match your machine.
  3. Choose File, then Save As. Set Save as type to All Files, and name the file with a .wsb extension, for example UnknownFile.wsb.
  4. Double-click the saved file. Windows Sandbox starts with the settings in that file.
  5. Confirm the result inside the sandbox. A disabled network should show no active connection, and a read-only mapped folder should not accept new files.
<Configuration>
  <Networking>Disable</Networking>
  <vGPU>Disable</vGPU>
  <ClipboardRedirection>Disable</ClipboardRedirection>
  <AudioInput>Disable</AudioInput>
  <VideoInput>Disable</VideoInput>
  <PrinterRedirection>Disable</PrinterRedirection>
  <MappedFolders>
    <MappedFolder>
      <HostFolder>C:UsersYourNameDownloads</HostFolder>
      <ReadOnly>true</ReadOnly>
    </MappedFolder>
  </MappedFolders>
</Configuration>

The Microsoft sample for an unknown download

Microsoft publishes a sample configuration for testing an unknown downloaded file. It disables networking and vGPU, and it maps the Downloads folder read-only, then opens that folder inside the sandbox. This is a sensible baseline for a single file you did not expect to receive. Adapt the folder path for your own account before you use it.

Keep the mapping read-only. A writable mapping for untrusted content is the setting most likely to leave a change behind after the sandbox is closed. If the file you are testing must write output, write it to a location inside the sandbox rather than to a host folder.

Disabled vGPU means software rendering. Applications that depend on hardware graphics may run more slowly or may not display as expected. That is a fair cost for a file that does not need graphics, but it is a reason to restore vGPU for a program that does.

Managed devices and policy

On managed Windows devices, administrators can control Sandbox through policy. Microsoft’s WindowsSandbox Policy CSP reference lists the controls and their applicability to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Mapped-folder policy support begins with Windows 11, version 24H2. Policy changes take effect only after Windows Sandbox is restarted. Check the exact edition and OS requirements in the current policy reference before assuming a control is available on a given device.

What these settings do not protect against

Turning off these conveniences narrows the path between the test environment and your host. It does not inspect the file, and it does not stop a program from doing harm inside the sandbox. Microsoft’s documentation does not publish measured figures for how often Windows Sandbox contains malware, so treat each setting as a reduction in exposure, not as a measured defense. For anything you cannot afford to lose, keep the sandbox in the same discipline you would use for any test: no mapped folders with your documents, no network access unless required, and no reuse of a sandbox session for an unrelated task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Since the sandbox is disposed when you close it, a clean session is the default. The exceptions are the writable mapped folders and any output you deliberately move back to the host, which is why those two settings deserve the most caution.

Quick checklist before you run an unknown file

  • Networking is disabled unless the file must reach a server.
  • Clipboard redirection is disabled unless you must transfer content.
  • Audio and video input are disabled unless the program uses them.
  • Any mapped folder is the narrowest one possible and is read-only.
  • Protected Client is enabled if you do not need to copy files in or out.
  • Your .wsb file points only to folders you can afford to expose.

The sample configuration and the checklist together cover the settings Microsoft documents as relevant to this task. For how Sandbox isolates the guest in general, see Microsoft Learn’s Windows Sandbox overview.
