Windows Recovery Options Explained: Reset, Restore, and Reinstall

System Restore undoes some system changes; Reset reinstalls Windows and removes apps, while reinstall options vary in what they keep. Learn how to choose and prepare.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least disruptive Windows recovery option that fits the problem: use System Restore to undo a recent system change, Reset when Windows needs reinstalling and you accept losing apps and settings, and a repair reinstall or installation media when appropriate. A reset’s “Keep my files” option preserves personal files, not installed apps or settings. Back up important files before any recovery process.

Which Windows recovery option should you choose?

Start with what still works and what changed. Microsoft recommends beginning with the least disruptive option; available choices depend on your Windows version and device.

Option Best fit Personal files Apps and settings Key limitation
System Restore A problem that began after a system change, if a suitable restore point exists Not affected Apps, drivers, updates, and settings changed after the restore point may be rolled back Does not replace a personal-file backup
Reset — Keep my files Reinstalling Windows while retaining personal files Kept Removed Back up first; a BitLocker recovery key may be required
Reset — Remove everything Starting fresh or preparing a PC for transfer Removed Removed Optional clean-data behavior is not certified government or industry data erasure
Windows Update repair reinstall Repairing the current Windows 11 installation on an eligible system Kept Kept Requires internet and power; availability varies by Windows version and configuration
Installation media Windows will not start or other recovery routes fail; also an option for a clean installation Depends on setup choice; a clean install removes them Depends on setup choice; a clean install removes them Follow setup choices carefully; creating media requires a USB drive
Recovery drive A recovery fallback created in advance Removed by this reinstall route; personal files are not stored on the recovery drive Removed Create it while Windows works; creation erases the USB drive’s contents

When should you use System Restore?

System Restore rolls system files, registry settings, and installed programs back to a selected restore point. It is useful when a problem follows a recent driver, app, update, or settings change and a suitable restore point is available. Personal files are not affected, but software or system changes made since the selected point may be undone. See Microsoft’s System Restore instructions.

What happens when you reset a PC?

Reset reinstalls Windows. “Keep my files” preserves personal files but removes apps and settings; “Remove everything” removes personal files, apps, and settings. Back up important files before either route, and check the choices shown before confirming. Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance explains the options.

If you choose “Remove everything,” an optional clean-data feature makes removed files harder for other people to recover. Microsoft says it is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards, so do not treat it as certified drive sanitization. During an active reset, do not manually restart the PC just because the screen is black or it restarts; Microsoft warns interrupting the process can cause it to fail.

What does “reinstall Windows” mean?

Reinstalling Windows can mean different routes, with different effects on files and apps. Check which route you are selecting and read the keep-or-remove choices rather than assuming every reinstall is a clean install.

Repair the current Windows 11 version through Windows Update

On eligible Windows 11 systems, “Fix problems using Windows Update” reinstalls the current version while preserving files, apps, and settings. It requires an internet connection and power during the process, and availability depends on Windows version and configuration. See Microsoft’s instructions for fixing issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Reinstall from installation media

Installation media provides an external route, including when Windows will not start or other options do not work. The outcome depends on the setup path and choices; a clean installation removes data from the selected drive, apps, and settings. Microsoft specifies a USB drive of at least 8 GB for creating installation media on another working PC. Creating the media erases the USB drive’s contents. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media instructions and confirm what the selected path will keep or remove.

Use a recovery drive

A recovery drive is a fallback prepared in advance, not a personal-file backup. Microsoft says it does not include personal files; this recovery reinstall route removes them. Create the drive while Windows is working, and copy anything already on the USB elsewhere first because creation erases its contents. See Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions.

What if Windows will not start?

A boot failure does not automatically require a clean install. If Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is available, its recovery choices can include uninstalling updates, System Restore, and Reset. If those do not resolve the problem, recovery or installation media may be options. Before proceeding with media, verify the keep-or-remove choices in setup; a clean installation removes data from the selected drive.

What should you do before recovery?

  • Back up important files. A recovery drive does not contain personal files, and some recovery routes remove them.
  • Find the BitLocker recovery key. If device encryption is enabled, Microsoft warns the key is needed to access most recovery options from WinRE.
  • Check Windows version and device compatibility. Options and menu labels vary; the Windows Update repair reinstall described here is for eligible Windows 11 systems.
  • Keep the PC powered and connected as required. The Windows Update repair reinstall needs internet and power.

Does the same guidance apply to Windows 10?

Core recovery options are available across Windows versions, but features and exact paths vary by version and device. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Verify the version and current support guidance before relying on a particular feature. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore guidance also describes a newer feature with version requirements.
