Windows Recovery and Dev Drive Trust: What to Know Before You Undo Changes

Windows recovery options have different scopes: KIR targets one update change, while System Restore can discard changes made after a restore point. Dev Drive mount status does not prove trust.

Windows has several ways to undo a problem, but they do not undo the same things. Known Issue Rollback (KIR) reverses a targeted change from a non-security update while leaving unrelated changes in place. System Restore can return much more of the device to an earlier state. And a mounted Dev Drive’s trust status is a separate fact from whether Windows can access it.

Which Windows recovery option fits the problem?

Start with the narrowest recovery action that matches the fault. Microsoft’s Windows device recovery framework maps recovery choices to different situations; they are not interchangeable versions of “undo.”

Option Scope Trigger or control What to verify afterward
Known Issue Rollback (KIR) A targeted change associated with a known issue in a non-security update; other changes in the update remain. Windows Update delivers KIR to consumer devices. Administrators can deploy a policy template on managed devices. Confirm that the issue is resolved and that the device’s update and policy state is as intended.
Uninstall an update or use “Go back” Update-level recovery for cases that are not addressed by a targeted KIR mitigation. Choose the relevant recovery option in Windows. Check the affected apps, system behavior, and update state.
Point-in-time restore Returns the device to the full system state captured in a restore point. Start the restore locally through Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE); a suitable restore point must exist. Check critical applications, security agents, policies, and access to encrypted volumes.
Reset this PC A broader recovery option for persistent problems after targeted recovery. Use the reset option in Windows recovery. Confirm that the device and required apps are working and that data is available.
Clean OS install A deep recovery option for severe corruption. Reinstall the operating system. Rebuild the device’s apps, policies, and security configuration, then restore needed data.

When one update change is the problem

KIR is designed for a known issue caused by a non-security update, not for removing the whole update. Microsoft describes its purpose as quickly reversing “only the targeted change, fix, functionality, or feature that caused the problem” in its Known Issue Rollback – Windows Server documentation. Consumer devices receive KIR through Windows Update; on managed devices, administrators can deploy a policy template.

When the issue is broader or persists

If the problem is not covered by KIR, update uninstall or “Go back” may fit an update-level failure. A persistent OS problem may call for Reset this PC, while deep corruption may require a clean installation. Those choices affect more of the system than a targeted KIR mitigation, so use the recovery framework to match the action to the cause rather than treating each option as a universal undo button.

Will System Restore undo your files?

It can undo changes made after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s Point-in-time restore for Windows describes this as returning a device to a captured full system state. Changes after that point can be lost, including files, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys. Cloud-stored data such as OneDrive is not affected by the restore.

Prepare before restoring

  • Make a separate backup of important data before starting recovery. Microsoft’s recovery guidance discusses OneDrive with Microsoft 365 Backup for resilience beyond the device; a separate external copy is another general backup option.
  • Check available disk space. Insufficient space can cause a restore to fail.
  • Make sure you can retrieve the BitLocker recovery key if the volume is encrypted; WinRE requires the key to access encrypted volumes.
  • Be aware that changing EFS-encrypted files, interrupting the restore, or file-system corruption can cause failure. A device may also fail to boot after rollback.

Check the security and policy state afterward

A restore can revert recent security updates or policies. Validate security agents and policy posture after it completes, alongside critical applications. Do not assume that a successful return to the desktop means the device’s protections and management settings are current.

Version-specific restore-point security checks

Microsoft’s “Restoring the System – Win32 apps,” updated July 14, 2026, says that on Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, and Windows Server 2025, after the July 2026 security update, System Restore points must pass security checks with Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) enabled. Microsoft also describes a 60-day bound when policy versions cannot be compared. This rule is specific to those named versions and update conditions; identify the device’s Windows version and update state before applying it to a restore decision. See Microsoft’s System Restore documentation.

Why can a Dev Drive still be mounted after its trust setting changes?

For a Dev Drive, mounted status and trust policy are separate facts. Microsoft’s fsutil devdrv documentation says a trust or untrust change for a volume in use can take effect at its next mount. The command’s /f option force-dismounts the volume to apply the change immediately.

Query the volume’s trust and filter state

Use fsutil devdrv query to report whether a Dev Drive volume is trusted and which file-system filters are attached or allowed. Check the actual volume and its reported state; a drive letter, successful access, or the fact that it is mounted does not establish that it is trusted.

Choose when the change takes effect

  • If the volume is in use, the trust or untrust change may wait until the next mount.
  • If you need the change to apply immediately, /f force-dismounts the volume. Be deliberate: dismounting can disrupt work using that volume.

This behavior is documented for Dev Drive trust and filter policy. It is not a general Windows rule that every mounted disk is unsafe, and mount status alone is not a universal security verdict.

Is Unified Write Filter another kind of rollback?

No. Unified Write Filter (UWF) is a separate, optional Windows feature, not a restore point or Dev Drive trust setting. It redirects writes to an overlay that normally clears on reboot or guest logoff. Microsoft describes the feature in its Unified Write Filter documentation. Its write-protection behavior does not substitute for backing up data or choosing a recovery method.
