To enable or disable the mode, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Printer Preferences. The separate installation preference may not appear on your PC.
First, identify which Ready Print setting you mean
Microsoft defines Windows Ready Print as its preferred way to communicate with printers, including through Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), eSCL scanning, and Universal Print. It is designed to work without third-party printer drivers. Microsoft’s overview describes the approach as intended to improve security, compatibility, and reliability.

The term can refer to two different controls. The first changes the default method Windows uses when installing supported printers. The second, Windows Protected Print Mode, restricts printing to Windows Ready Print. Microsoft documents the user-facing on/off steps for Protected Print Mode; the installation preference is only documented in an experimental preview note.
| Setting | What it changes | Availability and impact |
|---|---|---|
| Default install printers using Windows Ready Print | Makes Windows use IPP by default when installing supported printers; turning it off allows other available installation methods. | Documented in Experimental Preview Build 26300.8497, not confirmed as generally available in stable Windows 11. Microsoft’s preview note does not establish that every PC has the control. |
| Windows Protected Print Mode | Enforces Windows Ready Print exclusively. | Microsoft documents the Settings switch. Enabling it can remove printers that depend on third-party drivers. Microsoft’s Protected Print Mode guidance explains the effects. |
Enable Windows Protected Print Mode
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Printer Preferences.
- Under Windows protected print mode, select Set up.
- Review the prompts and select Yes, continue.
Windows may uninstall printers that use third-party drivers and remove those drivers from the driver store while the mode is active. If a compatible printer disappears, reinstall it after setup. Microsoft identifies Mopria-certified printers as the intended compatibility target; a Mopria-certified device previously installed with a third-party driver can be reinstalled to use Windows Ready Print.

Disable Windows Protected Print Mode
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Printer Preferences.
- Under Windows protected print mode, select Turn Off.
- Confirm by selecting Yes.
Turning the mode off does not automatically change printers that were installed with Windows Ready Print: they continue using it. To use a different installation method for one of those printers, remove it and install it again with Protected Print Mode disabled.
What may change or disappear when you enable the mode
Protected Print Mode can affect more than physical printers that rely on third-party drivers. Microsoft says unsupported software printers may also be removed. The legacy OneNote (Desktop) printer is one example; qualifying OneNote installations on Windows 11 version 26100 or later can use OneNote (Desktop) – Protected virtual printer.

Enabling the mode also removes XPS Document Writer and Fax. After turning Protected Print Mode off, Microsoft documents restoring XPS Document Writer through Windows Features and Fax through Settings > System > Optional features.

Find the separate default-install preference
Microsoft documented a setting named Default install printers using Windows Ready Print in Experimental Preview Build 26300.8497, under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If that option is present in your Windows installation, enabling it makes Windows use IPP by default for supported printer installations; disabling it permits other available installation methods.

Because the cited documentation is for an experimental preview and does not confirm broad release, do not assume the option exists on every Windows 11 PC. Its absence does not prevent you from using the separately documented Protected Print Mode switch.
If the setting is locked or missing
- Your organization manages the PC: If Group Policy enforces Protected Print Mode, Microsoft says users cannot turn it off in Settings. Contact your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
- You cannot find Protected Print Mode: Check the exact Printer Preferences area under Printers & scanners. If it is still absent, the available documentation does not establish a universal Windows 11 control on every device; the default-install preference in particular is only documented in an experimental preview.
- A printer was removed: This can happen when the device relies on a third-party driver or is unsupported in Protected Print Mode. Reinstall compatible printers; for one that depends on a third-party driver, you may need to turn the mode off first.
Administrator policy controls
For managed devices, Microsoft documents the Group Policy path as Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Printers > Configure Windows protected print. The Intune Policy CSP configuration uses OMA-URI ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Printers/ConfigureWindowsProtectedPrint, data type String, and value <enabled/>. These are administrator configuration details, not user-level ways around an enforced setting. See Microsoft’s enterprise guidance and Printers Policy CSP reference.
