To install the Jupyter pre-release in Cursor, open Extensions, find the ms-toolsai.jupyter extension published by ms-toolsai, then select Switch to pre-release on its detail page. Install Jupyter first if it is not already installed. The extension is for notebook integration; running a notebook also requires a working local or remote Python/Jupyter environment.
Install or switch Jupyter to pre-release
-
Open Cursor’s Extensions panel. Use

Search for Jupyter. Check that the result’s identifier is
ms-toolsai.jupyterand its publisher isms-toolsai; similarly named extensions may not be the intended one. Cursor’s data-science guide identifies this extension.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Open the extension’s detail page. If Jupyter is not installed, select Install and wait for it to finish. If it is already installed, select Switch to pre-release. The Jupyter listing on Open VSX currently shows that action. Its label or placement may change.
-
If Cursor prompts you to reload or restart after the install or channel change, follow the prompt. Do not assume a restart is always required.
-
Open a
.ipynbnotebook. Choose a notebook kernel if prompted; execution depends on an appropriate Python/Jupyter environment being available to Cursor. Cursor describes support for.ipynband.pyfiles with integrated cell execution in its data-science guide.
What the pre-release channel changes—and what it does not
The pre-release option changes which channel of the Jupyter extension Cursor uses. It does not, by itself, provide a Python installation, a Jupyter kernel, or access to a remote notebook environment. Those must be available separately for notebook execution. Microsoft’s pre-release extension instructions describe the general extension-detail-page workflow; their example is for Python, so Cursor’s actual control can vary.
Choose pre-release when you need a fix or feature that may not be in the stable channel and can accept the possibility of regressions. The available sources establish that the channel exists, but do not identify a specific current feature difference or quantify its risk. If you do not need a pre-release build, staying on stable avoids opting into a changing release channel.

If “Switch to pre-release” is missing
-
Confirm you opened the Jupyter detail page in Cursor’s own Extensions panel, not a similarly named extension or an unrelated marketplace page.
-
Check the identifier and publisher:
ms-toolsai.jupyterfromms-toolsai. -
Cursor uses Open VSX for third-party extensions, and its available catalog can differ from Microsoft Marketplace. The Jupyter listing on Open VSX currently displays the pre-release action, but registry listings and release availability can change. See Cursor’s extension documentation and the Open VSX listing.

Troubleshoot installation or activation problems
Isolate a possible extension conflict
If installation or activation fails, test whether another extension is interfering by launching Cursor with extensions disabled: cursor --disable-extensions. Cursor documents this option in its troubleshooting guide. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions and narrow down the conflict.

Reset the Jupyter extension
If the problem persists, uninstall Jupyter and install it again from Cursor’s Extensions panel. Cursor’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling a problematic extension to reset its stored data. Then try opening the notebook and selecting a kernel again.
Check version compatibility or return to stable
Record the installed Cursor and Jupyter extension versions when diagnosing a problem. A pre-release package may require editor APIs that are not available in every Cursor build, and compatibility depends on the specific versions. If the extension stops working after switching channels, use its version controls to return to the stable release, or update Cursor and try again. Neither option guarantees compatibility; verify that the installed versions work together.
