Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a one-time family tech-support session, use Quick Assist: your relative approves the connection, and can separately approve full control. Choose Remote Desktop when you need to access a PC that has already been configured for remote use. The key difference is whether you’re helping someone who is present to approve a session or logging in to a prepared computer.
Quick Assist vs. Remote Desktop at a glance
| Decision point | Quick Assist | Remote Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A one-off help session with a family member or friend | Using a PC that has been prepared for remote access |
| How a session starts | The helper shares a six-digit code; the recipient enters it and approves screen sharing | The user connects to an enabled remote PC by its name and signs in |
| Remote PC requirements | Microsoft’s support guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; installation can be restricted by organization policy | The host PC must run Windows Pro, and Remote Desktop must be enabled |
| Control | Screen sharing requires approval; taking full control requires a separate request and approval | After sign-in, the user can access the host’s desktop, apps, and files; Microsoft’s setup guide does not describe a per-session approval flow on the host |
| Available clients | Microsoft documents Quick Assist for support sessions; its browser app is for interactions with verified Microsoft support agents | Microsoft documents clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android |
| Safety consideration | Only connect with someone the recipient trusts, and reject unexpected support requests | Protect the host PC and sign-in credentials; setup alone does not establish that an internet-facing configuration is safe |
These differences follow Microsoft’s documented Quick Assist workflow and Remote Desktop requirements.

When Quick Assist is the better choice
Quick Assist is designed for helping another person remotely. It suits a family member who is at their PC and can participate in starting the session. The helper generates a six-digit code and shares it with the recipient, who enters it and allows screen sharing. If the helper needs to operate the PC, they must request full control; the recipient can accept or refuse that request.
Quick Assist also includes a laser pointer, annotations, and chat, which can help when explaining a setting or guiding someone through a change without taking control. Microsoft describes the process in its Quick Assist support guide.

Quick Assist setup and limitations
- A work- or school-managed PC may be blocked from installing the app by an organization’s policy.
- The Microsoft Store installation path may not work on some older Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases.
- The browser app is intended for support interactions with verified Microsoft support agents, not as a general browser-based way to assist a family member.
Check Microsoft’s current Quick Assist guidance if installation or compatibility is an issue.
When Remote Desktop is the better choice
Remote Desktop is for connecting to and using a configured PC, including its desktop, apps, and files. It is a better fit when the computer has been prepared in advance for remote access, rather than when a relative needs to approve a one-time support session.
Check the host before setting it up
- On the PC you want to access, confirm that it runs Windows Pro. The computer being used as the client can run any Windows edition, or a documented macOS, iOS, or Android client.
- On the host PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn on Remote Desktop.
- Note the PC name shown in the setup guidance.
- From the client device, connect using that PC name and sign in with an account permitted to access the host.
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guide documents these requirements and steps. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025; compatibility with Remote Desktop does not mean that Windows 10 remains a maintained operating system.

Does Remote Desktop work if the family PC runs Windows Home?
Not as the host under Microsoft’s documented setup: the remote PC must run Windows Pro. The client device can run any Windows edition, but that does not remove the Pro requirement for the PC being accessed.
Which one requires the other person to approve the connection?
Quick Assist requires the recipient to enter the helper’s code and allow screen sharing. Full control requires another approval. In contrast, Microsoft’s Remote Desktop setup guide describes connecting to an enabled host and signing in; it does not describe a separate approval prompt from someone sitting at that PC for each session.
How to choose for family support
- Choose Quick Assist if your relative is at the computer, can enter a code, and can approve screen sharing or a request for control.
- Choose Remote Desktop if you need to access a PC that is already configured for remote use and its host runs Windows Pro.
- Check the setup first if the PC is managed by work or school, runs an older release, or does not meet the Remote Desktop host requirement.
Use remote support safely
For Quick Assist, Microsoft warns that a helper may see the screen or control the PC if the recipient permits it. Start a session only with a known, trusted person; reject unexpected requests claiming to offer technical support. Microsoft’s advice is to allow a helper to connect only when the interaction was initiated by contacting Microsoft Support directly. For family help, the equivalent safeguard is to have the recipient contact the relative they know and start the session themselves.

If neither option fits
Microsoft also documents Windows Remote Assistance, which uses an invitation or Easy Connect flow and requires incoming assistance connections to be enabled. It is a separate option from both Quick Assist and Remote Desktop; see Microsoft’s Remote Assistance guide for its requirements.
