Neither Windows nor Linux is the right choice for every PC user. Pick the operating system that supports the applications, games, hardware, and AI runtimes you actually plan to use—and compare those workloads on your own machine. The six-month period in this guide is a way to organize your evaluation, not a claim that a six-month hands-on test was conducted.

How do Windows and Linux compare for a mixed-use PC?

The most useful comparison is not which operating system wins in the abstract. It is whether each one can run your required software reliably, how much setup and troubleshooting it takes, and whether it fits your gaming and local-AI workflow. The same GPU can be supported differently by individual apps, games, drivers, and runtimes, so an OS-level slogan cannot answer every compatibility question.

Decision area Windows Linux
Windows-specific requirements Windows 11 has Microsoft-published minimum hardware and initial-setup requirements, described below. Requirements depend on the distribution and the applications or games you intend to run.
Local-AI options in the cited documentation Microsoft documents Foundry Local hardware paths including Qualcomm NPU, DirectML/WinML GPU, NVIDIA CUDA, and CPU fallback. Ollama documents Windows-specific installation options that depend on hardware. NVIDIA documents local-AI development on Linux as well as Windows. NVIDIA AI Workbench lists specific Ubuntu releases for full local installation.
Gaming evidence available here Valve’s September 2026 survey reports Windows use among surveyed Steam users. That is not a compatibility or performance result. The same survey reports Linux use among surveyed Steam users. It does not establish how any individual game performs or whether it works on your setup.
What decides your result Required applications, exact hardware, game-by-game compatibility, runtime support, setup effort, and the amount of troubleshooting you are comfortable doing.

These are differences in documented support and decision criteria, not a benchmark ranking. Neither the cited vendor documentation nor the Steam survey establishes a universal Windows-versus-Linux performance winner.

Can your PC run Windows 11?

Microsoft’s published Windows 11 minimum requirements are a 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that matches its approved-CPU requirements, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying 720p display. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup.

Those are eligibility minimums, not recommended specifications for a gaming or local-AI workstation. Specific games, development tools, models, and runtimes can need substantially more memory, storage, or graphics capability. Check the requirements for the software you plan to use rather than treating the Windows minimum as a suitable build target.

Which operating system fits your technical work?

Start with the applications and tools you must use

List the exact applications, development environments, peripherals, and launchers your workflow depends on. Verify each one’s current support for your OS, device, and version. A tool that runs through a compatibility layer or a container may be workable, but that adds a dependency to maintain and troubleshoot. If a required application or device has no supported Linux path, that can outweigh Linux’s other advantages for a single-PC setup.

Count maintenance as part of the choice

Include installation, updates, graphics and peripheral drivers, backups, recovery, and troubleshooting in your comparison. A system that launches a tool once but requires recurring manual fixes may be a poor fit if you need predictable daily use. Conversely, if you are comfortable diagnosing driver, package, or compatibility issues, you may accept setup work in exchange for the flexibility you want.

Can you run local AI models on Windows and Linux?

Yes, the cited documentation describes local-AI options for both operating systems, but support depends on the particular application, hardware, and execution backend. Model compatibility, available memory, and runtime support matter more than an OS label by itself.

Windows execution paths

Microsoft’s Foundry Local documentation says the service selects from available hardware paths at startup: a Qualcomm NPU through QNN, a DirectX 12-capable GPU through WinML/DirectML, an NVIDIA GPU through CUDA, or CPU fallback. An app requests a model by alias, and the service selects a hardware-optimized variant. Microsoft also describes Windows ML as a way for apps to use a shared ONNX Runtime and download vendor-specific execution providers. DirectML is a GPU acceleration API built on Direct3D 12 for compatible GPUs from AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.

Microsoft states, specifically about Foundry Local, “Foundry Local runs entirely on-device.” Its FAQ distinguishes inference from network activity: the initial model download and optional catalog refreshes use the network. This statement describes Foundry Local’s documented behavior; it should not be generalized to every AI app, model-download process, or Windows service.

For Ollama on Windows, the project’s documentation lists additional installation packages that may be needed depending on hardware, including an AMD ROCm package and an additional NVIDIA-related package option. Check Ollama’s current platform and GPU documentation for your GPU and the release you intend to install; package and compatibility details can change.

Linux execution paths and AI Workbench

NVIDIA’s local-AI guidance lists GeForce RTX development on both Linux and Windows, with a 6–32 GB VRAM category range. This is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that a specific model, quantization, context length, or application will fit on a particular card. NVIDIA advises choosing hardware based on the operating system, available GPU or unified memory, model size, and workflow.

NVIDIA AI Workbench’s support matrix lists full local installation on Windows 11 build 22631 or later and Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04. For Workbench specifically, NVIDIA lists 16 GB of system RAM as a minimum and 32 GB as recommended. Its storage examples differ by setup: Windows container storage includes virtualization/runtime and container overhead, while Ubuntu stores containers directly on the filesystem and describes native container runtimes without virtualization. These figures and storage considerations apply to Workbench’s own installation examples, not to all local-AI software.

Check the whole workload, not just the model name

Before committing to an OS for local inference, verify the exact combination you plan to use:

  • Model and format: Confirm that your inference application supports the model format and the model’s intended settings.
  • Backend: Check whether the application supports your GPU, NPU, or CPU through the required runtime on that OS.
  • Memory: Match the model and intended context to available VRAM or unified memory, while accounting for system RAM needs.
  • Storage: Account for the OS, application, downloaded model files, and any container or runtime overhead relevant to your setup.
  • Network behavior: Separate model downloads and catalog updates from inference, and check the specific application’s documentation for its data-handling behavior.

Should you switch from Windows to Linux for gaming?

Do not decide from the operating system alone. Check each game you care about on your exact distribution, hardware, launcher, and current software versions. A useful game-by-game check includes whether it launches, whether multiplayer or anti-cheat requirements block play, which graphics API and features it uses, and whether frame pacing and controller or peripheral support meet your needs. An installation that starts is not necessarily a reliable gaming setup.

Valve’s optional, anonymous Steam Hardware & Software Survey for September 2026 listed Windows at 95.03% and Linux at 3.05% among its surveyed Steam users; Windows 11 64-bit was listed at 71.34%. The Linux figure spans multiple distributions, including CachyOS, SteamOS Holo, Arch, Linux Mint, Bazzite, Ubuntu, and Fedora. These respondent shares describe survey participation, not the share of all PC users, game compatibility, performance, or user satisfaction.

There is no controlled same-hardware, same-title Windows-versus-Linux gaming result established by the cited official sources. Treat performance as a question to measure on your own machine rather than inferring it from survey shares or platform popularity.

Keep feature claims narrow

Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is a specific Windows feature, not a general verdict on upscaling or gaming on either operating system. Microsoft says it requires Windows 11 24H2 or later, updated drivers, and an eligible device category: specified Snapdragon X/X2 Copilot+ PCs, Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Copilot+ PCs, or an ROG Xbox Ally X under stated conditions. The supported-game circumstances also apply. Microsoft lists Vulkan, OpenGL, and DirectX 9 runtimes as unsupported for Auto SR. Do not use those restrictions to draw conclusions about other upscaling technologies.

How can you compare the systems over six months?

If you are planning your own evaluation, use the same checklist for both operating systems and record real outcomes. Keep a note of the machine and software versions so that a result can be understood later; changing a driver or runtime can change the outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the baseline. Note the CPU, GPU or NPU, RAM, storage, firmware settings, and peripherals. Record the OS edition/build, Linux distribution and kernel, and graphics driver versions.
  2. List the required workloads. Name your applications, development tools, launchers, games, and AI models. Mark which are essential and which are optional.
  3. Verify support before installation. Check the current application, game, driver, and runtime documentation for your exact OS and hardware. For AI, include the model format, backend, and memory requirements.
  4. Test repeatable tasks. Record whether each app works, how much setup it needs, and any error or workaround. For games, note launch success, anti-cheat or launcher issues, graphics features, frame pacing, and measured performance only if you actually measure it under disclosed conditions.
  5. Track maintenance. Log updates, driver changes, breakages, recovery steps, and time spent troubleshooting. This shows the operational cost of keeping the system useful, not just whether it worked on installation day.
  6. Review monthly and decide by workload. Compare the recorded results for your important tasks. Keep the OS that best serves the work you cannot compromise, or consider separating workloads if one installation is not a good fit for all of them.

What changes if you dual-boot?

Dual-booting lets one PC start either operating system, which can be useful when a required game or application works better in one environment and your development or AI workflow in another. It also means maintaining two installations and managing shared hardware and storage between them. Plan space for both operating systems, applications, games, model files, and any container data you use; Microsoft’s 64 GB Windows storage minimum alone does not establish a suitable capacity for those workloads.

Before changing partitions or installing a second OS, back up important files and check the installation instructions for the exact Linux distribution and PC firmware. Confirm how you will restore the boot menu and recover each installation if an update or configuration change prevents startup. If you depend on the PC every day, preserve a recovery route before experimenting.

Which should you choose?

Choose Windows when your must-have applications, games, hardware features, or setup preferences are best served by its supported paths. Choose Linux when your required workloads and devices are supported there and you value its environment enough to take on its maintenance. Choose dual-booting only when the benefits of keeping separate environments outweigh the added installation, storage, and recovery work. The deciding evidence is your own compatibility checklist—not a single market-share figure, vendor feature, or claim that one OS always performs better.
