Many Windows apps can run on an Arm laptop: Arm64 apps run natively, while supported x86 and x64 apps run through emulation. The key limits are Windows version and drivers. Microsoft documents x86 emulation on Windows 10 on Arm, and x86 and x64 emulation on Windows 11 on Arm; drivers must be built for Arm64.
What does Windows on Arm mean?
Windows on Arm is Windows running on a computer with an Arm processor rather than the x86- or x64-based processors commonly used in PCs. Software built for Arm64 can run directly on that processor. Windows can also translate supported x86 and x64 application code so many existing Windows programs can run.
That distinction matters: a program opening successfully does not guarantee every feature will work. Apps can rely on drivers or other components that cannot be handled by application emulation.
Which apps can run, and does the Windows version matter?
| Windows edition | Arm64 apps | x86 apps | x64 apps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 on Arm | Run natively | Emulation supported | Not listed as supported in Microsoft’s emulation guide |
| Windows 11 on Arm | Run natively | Emulation supported | Emulation supported |
Microsoft’s guide documents x86 emulation for Windows 10 on Arm and both x86 and x64 emulation for Windows 11 on Arm. These are categories of supported application code, not a guarantee that every individual app or feature will work. See Microsoft’s Windows on Arm emulation guide.

How does emulation work?
Emulation lets Windows translate instructions intended for an x86 or x64 processor so they can execute on Arm hardware. On Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft includes Prism, an emulator that translates blocks of x86 instructions for Arm64 execution and incorporates performance and CPU-usage optimizations. That does not make emulated software equivalent to a native Arm64 build: results depend on the particular app and hardware.
Emulation applies to user-mode application code, not drivers. Microsoft explains how this distinction works in How emulation works on Arm.

Why drivers are the biggest compatibility limit
Drivers operate outside ordinary application code to connect Windows with devices and system functions. They cannot rely on x86 or x64 emulation on an Arm PC. Kernel-mode drivers and user-mode print drivers must be native Arm64 binaries, according to Microsoft’s Windows on Arm FAQ.
This means an app may install and run while a feature it depends on does not. For example, a peripheral or printer feature may require a driver that has no Arm64 version. Check for Arm64 driver support separately from checking whether the app itself is compatible.

Native apps versus emulated apps
| Path | What runs | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 | Code built for Arm64 runs directly on the processor. | Microsoft recommends native builds for the best performance and battery life because they avoid emulation overhead. The actual difference for a given workload is not established as a universal figure. |
| x86 or x64 emulation | Supported user-mode apps run through Windows emulation. | Can make existing apps usable without a native Arm build, but app performance and feature compatibility vary; drivers still need native Arm64 versions. |
Microsoft’s guidance for developers describes the benefits of native builds in its Windows on Arm development documentation.
What is Arm64EC?
Arm64EC is a Windows 11 application binary interface that helps developers transition an x64 app in stages rather than porting every component at once. Arm64EC portions run natively, while x64 code remaining in the same process continues to run under Windows emulation. It is a developer migration option, not a setting that converts an installed app; Arm64EC is not available on Windows 10 on Arm. Details are in Microsoft’s Arm64EC documentation.
How to check whether your apps and devices will work
- Check the exact app and version. Search Microsoft’s maintained Windows on Arm Ready Software list for app and game compatibility information. A general claim that many apps run is not confirmation for your particular program.
- Confirm the Windows version. If the app is x64, Microsoft documents x64 emulation on Windows 11 on Arm, not in its Windows 10 on Arm entry.
- Check essential peripherals and features. Confirm that the device maker provides an Arm64 driver for each printer, scanner, accessory, or other driver-dependent function you need. App compatibility alone is not enough.
- Test the actual workflow before relying on it. If a particular feature fails, determine whether it depends on a driver or component outside the app’s user-mode code.
If an app behaves unexpectedly
Windows provides per-app emulation settings for uncommon Prism compatibility problems. Some settings can change optimization choices or imitate earlier emulator behavior. Microsoft cautions that overrides may reduce performance and can cause an app to crash or fail to launch, so treat them as targeted troubleshooting options rather than general compatibility fixes. See Microsoft’s guidance on emulation on Arm for the available settings.
