Confirm the approved support route first, then remove or block only the identified tool through an authorized process. If a suspicious session is active, disconnect it and report it immediately.
First, identify the device and the remote-access tool
Start by determining whether the device is personal or managed by an employer, school, client, or other organization. Note the app’s displayed name, publisher, version, and—if visible—its install location, service name, or process name. Avoid removing several unfamiliar items at once; doing so can make it harder to identify what affected support or connectivity.

A product name alone cannot tell you whether a tool is authorized. Remote-access software can support legitimate IT work, but threat actors can also misuse it. CISA, NSA, FBI, MS-ISAC, and INCD describe both sides in their Guide to Securing Remote Access Software, published June 6, 2023. Check who installed or manages the app, whether your organization expects it, and whether its use matches the support interaction you requested.

Agree on support before removing anything
Ask the responsible administrator to confirm which support tool is approved, how you can request help during the change, and who can restore access if removal affects device management. If you own the device but a trusted organization or technician installed the app, check with them before removing it if it may be part of the support arrangement. Do not accept an unsolicited connection as a substitute.
An organization choosing a replacement should assess who can initiate sessions, how helpers are authenticated, whether users must approve access, what permissions helpers receive, what session records are available, and whether the service supports the device and its enrollment status. Microsoft’s Intune Remote Help documentation describes role-based controls and session reports, as well as limitations: some auditing is limited on unenrolled devices, and conditional-access rules do not apply to unattended access. Remote Help is one example, not a universal recommendation; suitability and licensing depend on the organization and its devices.

Disconnect the session and notify your organization’s IT or security team. Microsoft specifically advises immediate disconnection and reporting when a Quick Assist helper may be malicious. Do not share account credentials or approve further control prompts.

Managed device: administrator-led removal
For a managed device, ask the administrator to remove the identified app or configuration through the organization’s endpoint-management console or approved process. Microsoft Intune’s remove apps and configurations guidance covers supported items and platforms; the documented minimum roles include Help Desk Operator and School Administrator. The process includes reviewing the action, removing items, monitoring status, and restoring items when needed.
Avoid using broad network blocks as a first user-level fix. Microsoft documents blocking Quick Assist’s service endpoint as an organizational control, but warns that this can also disrupt Remote Help, which depends on that endpoint. Administrators should check dependencies and scope before applying such a block.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify removal and preserve the support connection
After an administrator-led removal, ask them to check the action’s status and the device’s management assignment, then confirm that the approved support route still works. In Intune, removal is temporary: assigned apps and configurations may be reapplied within 8–24 hours, according to Microsoft’s guidance updated April 6, 2026. An administrator can restore removed items.

Check connectivity before changing network profiles or certificates. Microsoft warns that removing Wi-Fi, VPN, or certificates used to reach Intune can disrupt management connectivity; a guest network or cellular connection may be needed to restore access. Do not remove those items as a workaround for removing an app unless the administrator confirms the dependency and recovery route.
Reduce the chance of another unauthorized installation
For organizations, CISA’s joint guide recommends administrator-level controls such as application allowlisting and monitoring remote-access software. These can help reduce unapproved execution and identify suspicious use, but they are not settings an individual should change on a managed device without authorization.
