Windows Memory Integrity vs. Antivirus: What Each Protects Against

Memory integrity hardens Windows kernel code integrity through virtualization-based security; antivirus is a separate antimalware layer. Learn why they complement each other, how to check HVCI, and what to do about incompatible drivers.

Windows Memory integrity and antivirus defend different parts of a PC. Memory integrity—Microsoft’s Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI)—hardens the Windows kernel by isolating code-integrity checks with virtualization-based security (VBS). Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer. Enabling Memory integrity can strengthen a system, but it does not replace antivirus.

The short answer: complementary defenses, not substitutes

Memory integrity is a Windows platform security feature aimed at the kernel, the privileged part of Windows that controls hardware, memory and core operating-system functions. It uses virtualization-based security to run kernel-mode code-integrity checks in an isolated environment. Antivirus is a separate category of protection whose detection and response capabilities depend on the particular product and version.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because malware can target both ordinary software and the kernel. Memory integrity helps make kernel tampering harder; antivirus provides an independent antimalware layer. A PC can have Memory integrity enabled and still need antivirus protection, and an antivirus product does not make kernel code-integrity hardening unnecessary.

What Windows Memory integrity protects

It protects the kernel-code trust boundary

Memory integrity is also called Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI). Microsoft describes it as “a critical component that protects and hardens Windows by running kernel mode code integrity within the isolated virtual environment of VBS.” The feature moves the code-integrity decision for kernel-mode code into that protected environment rather than leaving the decision entirely in the normal Windows kernel.

Kernel-mode software includes Windows components and drivers that run with very high privileges. If an attacker can cause unauthorized kernel code to run or alter code already in memory, the attacker may gain control at a level where ordinary application safeguards are less effective. HVCI is designed to make that class of attack more difficult; it is not a general guarantee that every malicious program will be stopped.

It checks drivers and binaries before they run

Windows checks kernel drivers and other kernel-mode binaries before they start. With Memory integrity, those code-integrity checks run in the isolated VBS environment. Code that does not satisfy the applicable integrity requirements should not be allowed to become trusted kernel code.

The protection is about enforcing the kernel’s code-loading rules. It does not inspect every user document, browser download or application in the way a complete antimalware product might. Its scope is the kernel execution boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It restricts executable kernel memory

Microsoft’s VBS documentation says Memory integrity “also restricts kernel memory allocations that could be used to compromise the system, ensuring that kernel memory pages are only made executable after passing code integrity checks inside the secure runtime environment, and executable pages themselves are never writable.”

In practical terms, an attacker has a harder path for placing altered or injected instructions into executable kernel memory. Pages must pass code-integrity checks before becoming executable, and executable pages cannot also be writable. This combination helps frustrate some attempts to modify or inject kernel code, but it does not mean that all malware infections, exploit chains or unsafe applications are blocked.

What that boundary leaves outside its scope

HVCI does not serve as a general-purpose scanner for email attachments, scripts, documents, websites or user-mode applications. A malicious file can still require detection and cleanup by antimalware tools even when Memory integrity is enabled. Likewise, a vulnerability in an application, a stolen password or a deceptive message is not automatically solved by kernel code-integrity enforcement.

Memory integrity can also be enabled on a machine that later develops a driver or application problem. The setting describes a security control, not a verdict that every installed component is safe or compatible. Use Windows’ warning details and the hardware or software manufacturer’s support information when diagnosing a failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What antivirus protects

Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer

Antivirus products belong to a different protection category from HVCI. They use their own detection and response capabilities to identify or handle malicious software. Microsoft’s security documentation distinguishes traditional antivirus solutions from Memory integrity and treats them as separate defenses.

Because antivirus is a product category rather than one single implementation, its exact coverage, settings and behavior vary by product and version. This comparison therefore does not assign one universal list of antivirus features or rank particular products. The important boundary is that antivirus is intended to address malicious software through its antimalware engine, while Memory integrity hardens how Windows validates and executes kernel code.

Antivirus does not provide HVCI’s memory rules

An antivirus engine can coexist with HVCI, but it does not automatically impose HVCI’s isolated kernel code-integrity checks or its rule that executable kernel pages must not be writable. Conversely, HVCI does not become an antivirus scanner simply because it can block some kernel-level abuse.

Do not read the word “integrity” in the Windows setting as a claim that it checks the integrity of every file on the computer. In this context, the term refers to code-integrity enforcement for the kernel and related protected execution conditions.

Memory integrity vs. antivirus at a glance

Question Memory integrity / HVCI Antivirus
Primary layer Kernel code integrity and kernel-memory protections Antimalware protection; exact features depend on the product and version
Main mechanism Uses Windows VBS to isolate kernel-mode code-integrity checks and restrict executable kernel memory Uses the product’s own antimalware detection and response mechanisms; Microsoft documentation does not define one mechanism common to every product
What it is trying to stop Attempts to load, alter or inject kernel code that violates code-integrity requirements Malicious software and related threats within the product’s supported coverage
Relationship to the other layer Complements antivirus; does not replace it Complements HVCI; does not provide HVCI’s isolated enforcement environment
Main caveat Requires suitable hardware and firmware virtualization and can expose incompatible drivers or applications Coverage and behavior differ by product and version

No universal antivirus detection rate or performance percentage can be inferred from these categories. Such figures would require a named product, version, test method and test date.

How the two layers work together

Different controls can cover different stages

Consider a hypothetical attack that begins with malicious software and then attempts to tamper with the Windows kernel. An antivirus product may detect or respond to the malicious software according to its own capabilities. If the attack reaches the kernel and tries to introduce code that fails Windows’ integrity requirements, Memory integrity can add a second enforcement boundary. Neither outcome is guaranteed for every attack, but the controls address different stages and mechanisms.

The layers are useful even when an attack never reaches the kernel. Antivirus can handle threats that remain in user mode, while HVCI remains a platform safeguard for a different failure mode. Defense in depth means that bypassing one control does not automatically remove every other control, not that every threat will be stopped.

Memory integrity and App Control are also distinct

Microsoft treats Memory integrity and App Control as separable technologies that can be deployed together. App Control governs which code is allowed to run. Memory integrity hardens the environment in which kernel code-integrity enforcement operates. Combining them can create layered policy: one control limits approved code, while the other protects the kernel enforcement process and kernel memory conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That layered-security conclusion follows from the documented roles of the technologies. It does not turn either feature into a replacement for antivirus.

Does Memory integrity replace antivirus?

No. Memory integrity is a kernel-hardening feature, not a full antimalware scanner. It can help defend against attempts to exploit or modify the Windows kernel, while antivirus remains a separate layer for detecting and responding to malicious software. Keep an antivirus solution appropriate for your Windows edition, organization and threat model, and treat HVCI as an additional platform defense when your hardware and drivers support it.

Turning HVCI on is therefore not a reason to uninstall, disable or stop updating antivirus. Conversely, installing antivirus is not a reason to ignore an available, compatible Windows kernel-hardening control. Check each layer independently and follow your organization’s security policy if the computer is managed.

Read the status text before changing the switch. A warning may identify an incompatible driver, while an unavailable control may reflect hardware, firmware, Windows-edition or policy differences. The setting’s presence alone does not prove that HVCI is currently running; use the displayed status and System Information for confirmation.

Confirm virtualization support first

Hardware virtualization must be available and enabled in the system’s UEFI or BIOS. The wording and location of that firmware setting vary by computer manufacturer. If virtualization is disabled, enable it in UEFI/BIOS according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then return to Windows Security and check the Core isolation page again.

Firmware changes can affect other virtualization-dependent software, so record the original setting and use the manufacturer’s documentation. On a work-managed PC, coordinate with the administrator rather than changing firmware on your own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the running VBS services in System Information

Windows System Information can provide a second view of the configuration. Open System Information and inspect the entries describing virtualization-based security services running. The report can identify Hypervisor-enforced Code Integrity, the system-information label associated with Memory integrity. The exact fields shown depend on the Windows build and system configuration.

This check is useful when Windows Security and a management console show different-looking labels. It reports the VBS state; it is not an antivirus status report and should not be used as an infection scan.

Drivers, applications and compatibility problems

An incompatible-driver warning is not proof of infection

When Windows reports that a driver is incompatible with Memory integrity, the message indicates a compatibility problem with the HVCI requirements. It is not, by itself, evidence that the computer is infected. A legitimate older driver can fail the requirements even when no malware is present.

Do not download a replacement driver from an unverified site merely to clear the warning. Identify the device and publisher, then use the manufacturer’s support channel or the update process approved by your organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this recovery sequence

  1. Record the driver name and publisher shown by Windows Security.
  2. Check the device or application manufacturer for a newer driver that explicitly supports the current Windows version and Memory integrity.
  3. Install the manufacturer’s compatible update, following its instructions, and then revisit Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details.
  4. If no compatible driver exists, decide whether the dependent device or application is essential. Microsoft identifies removing the device or application that depends on the driver as another option.
  5. If the software is required and cannot be updated or removed, weigh the compatibility need against the reduction in kernel hardening before changing the Memory integrity setting.

Microsoft warns that some applications and hardware drivers may malfunction with Memory integrity enabled. In rare cases, incompatibility can lead to a boot failure. Because of that possibility, save work, keep a recovery route available and avoid changing the setting casually on a machine that lacks a tested rollback plan.

If disabling Memory integrity is the only way to restore operation, treat that as a documented exception rather than a permanent fix. Keep antivirus and other controls active, track the affected hardware or application, and revisit the decision when the manufacturer releases a compatible update.

Managed computers need a pilot group

For an organization, do not enable HVCI across every computer at once. Microsoft recommends testing on a group of machines first. Include the hardware models, Windows versions, drivers and business applications that are actually used. Monitor for failed devices, application malfunctions and startup problems, then resolve driver issues before expanding the deployment.

Performance and operational trade-offs

Memory integrity introduces additional virtualization-based enforcement, and Microsoft notes that compatibility and performance can differ by processor generation. The available evidence does not establish one percentage slowdown that applies to all PCs. Results depend on the processor, firmware, drivers and workload, so a number from one machine or benchmark should not be presented as a universal expectation.

The practical trade-off is therefore specific to the computer: stronger kernel hardening when the platform is compatible, balanced against the possibility of an incompatible driver, application malfunction or a performance difference. Testing the workloads that matter to you is more reliable than assuming a result from another system.

For a personal PC, test the applications and devices you use most. For an organization, compare representative machines before and after enablement and document any measurable change. Avoid treating a perceived slowdown as proof that HVCI is malfunctioning; investigate drivers, firmware and workload conditions separately.

Choosing the right response to common situations

Memory integrity is off and Windows shows no warning

Check whether hardware virtualization is enabled in UEFI/BIOS, then review the Core isolation page for a reason or driver warning. If the option is available and compatible, enabling it adds kernel hardening. Continue to maintain antivirus protection because turning on HVCI does not provide antimalware coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows names one incompatible driver

Start with the manufacturer’s driver update rather than assuming compromise. If an updated driver is unavailable, determine whether the related device or application can be removed or replaced. On a business machine, test the change on a representative pilot system before wider deployment.

An application stops working after enablement

Treat the symptom as a compatibility issue first. Check for an updated application or driver from its manufacturer and document the change. If the software is mission-critical and no compatible update exists, restore a known-good configuration through your organization’s change process while evaluating alternatives; do not interpret the malfunction as evidence that antivirus has failed or that the application was malicious.

You are investigating a suspected malware incident

Do not use the Memory integrity switch as an infection test. HVCI status tells you about a kernel-hardening configuration, not whether the computer is clean. Use the antivirus and incident-response capabilities appropriate to your environment, and separately verify the HVCI and VBS status in Windows Security and System Information.

Frequently asked questions

Is Memory integrity the same thing as antivirus?

No. Memory integrity, or HVCI, protects the Windows kernel’s code-integrity boundary and kernel memory conditions. Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer whose capabilities depend on the product and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run antivirus and Memory integrity at the same time?

Yes. They are separate controls intended to coexist. HVCI adds kernel hardening; antivirus continues to provide its own malware detection and response functions.

Will Memory integrity block every rootkit or kernel exploit?

No security feature provides that guarantee. HVCI helps make some attempts to load, alter or inject unauthorized kernel code more difficult by isolating integrity checks and restricting executable kernel memory, but attack outcomes vary.

Does an incompatible-driver message mean the driver is malware?

No. The warning identifies a driver that does not meet the compatibility requirements for HVCI. A legitimate older driver can trigger it. Verify the publisher and seek an updated version from the manufacturer.

What should I do if enabling Memory integrity causes a boot problem?

Use the recovery procedure appropriate to your Windows installation and hardware, then identify the incompatible driver or application. Microsoft notes that boot failure is rare but possible. On a managed computer, involve IT and use the documented rollback process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning Memory integrity off turn antivirus off?

No. The settings are separate. Disabling HVCI reduces that kernel-hardening layer but does not by itself change an antivirus product’s status. Check antivirus status in its own Windows or product interface.

Why can’t I see the Memory integrity switch?

Windows version, hardware, firmware virtualization and management policy affect which controls appear. Check Device security and System Information, and ask the device administrator or manufacturer if the option remains unavailable.

Should a business enable HVCI everywhere immediately?

No. Microsoft recommends testing on a group of machines first. Include representative hardware, drivers and applications, monitor for malfunctions and startup issues, and expand only after compatibility is understood.

What to remember

  • Memory integrity is HVCI, a Windows VBS feature that isolates kernel-mode code-integrity enforcement.
  • It restricts kernel memory so executable pages must pass integrity checks and executable pages are not writable.
  • Antivirus is a separate antimalware layer whose capabilities vary by product and version.
  • Using both layers can provide defense in depth, and App Control can add a separate code-allowance policy.
  • UEFI/BIOS virtualization, driver support and application compatibility determine whether HVCI can be enabled safely.
  • An incompatible-driver warning is a compatibility signal, not proof of malware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows Memory integrity replace antivirus?

No. Memory integrity hardens kernel code integrity through VBS; antivirus remains the separate antimalware layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Memory integrity actually block?

It helps prevent kernel code that fails integrity checks from becoming trusted and restricts executable kernel memory, making some kernel tampering and injection attempts harder.

Can Memory integrity cause problems?

Yes. Some drivers or applications may malfunction, and Microsoft says a boot failure is possible in rare incompatibility cases. Check for an updated manufacturer driver.

How do I verify that HVCI is running?

Open Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. System Information can also report Hypervisor-enforced Code Integrity among the running VBS services.

The Bottom Line

Memory integrity and antivirus protect different layers. Keep antivirus for antimalware coverage, and enable HVCI when virtualization, drivers and applications are compatible; test first on managed systems.
