How to review an AI phone’s permissions and limit access to your data

To limit an AI phone’s access, audit it in layers: check recent access in Android’s Privacy Dashboard, reduce the phone permissions granted to the assistant’s app, review the assistant’s account and activity controls, and enable on-device-only processing when your model offers it. These controls reduce what the assistant can reach, but an operating-system permission audit alone cannot prove that no account data or user-submitted content is processed by an online service.

The instructions below focus on Android because Google documents the clearest controls and Gemini integration. Menu names vary by Android release and manufacturer. If your labels differ, search Settings for Privacy, Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, or the name of your AI service. Apple Intelligence settings are not covered here because exact iPhone controls vary by release and are not verified in this guide.

What an AI-phone privacy review can—and cannot—tell you

A permission review answers a narrow but important question: which apps are allowed to use sensitive phone resources such as the camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, files, call logs, SMS, calendar, notifications, or nearby devices? Android also records recent use of many permissions, so you can investigate access you did not expect.

A second layer covers the assistant account and service. Gemini, for example, has activity, connected-service, and privacy controls that are separate from Android’s permission switches. A third layer is the AI feature’s processing mode: some supported features can run on the device, while others require an online connection. Removing a permission can limit a feature without changing what an account-based service may process when you voluntarily submit a prompt, image, screen, or other content.

Use all three layers rather than treating one screen as a complete privacy audit.

1. Record your phone model and software before changing settings

Write down the exact phone model, Android version, and security or system-update level. AI features and menu paths can change between releases, and a manufacturer may move Google’s standard controls into a differently named section.

Find the version information

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search box for Android version, Software information, or About phone.
  3. Record the model name, Android version, and the date of the latest security update.
  4. Note whether the assistant is Gemini, another vendor assistant, or an AI feature built into the phone’s camera, keyboard, gallery, recorder, or dialer.

Keep this record with your notes. If a later update changes a menu or adds a permission, you can tell whether the difference is caused by software rather than a mistake in your audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start with recent access in Privacy Dashboard

Android’s Privacy Dashboard is the fastest way to see whether an app recently used a sensitive permission. Google describes it this way: “From the privacy dashboard, you can see which apps are accessing data, which permissions apps are using, and when that access is happening.” See Google Android Help’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.

Open the dashboard

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, or on some phones Security and privacy followed by Privacy.
  3. Tap Privacy dashboard.
  4. Select Camera, Microphone, Location, or another permission category.
  5. Review each app, the access time, and the event details available on your phone.
  6. Open an app entry to jump to its permission controls and change access if needed.

The history window depends on Android version: Google documents up to seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are interface history windows, not measurements of how much data an app collected. Older or customized Android versions may show a different period or a less detailed dashboard.

What to look for

  • An assistant or host app using the microphone when you did not initiate voice input.
  • Camera access outside a camera-based question, scanning feature, or video call.
  • Location access while the app is not being used, when background location is unnecessary.
  • Contacts, call logs, SMS, files, or photos being accessed by a feature you do not use.
  • Repeated access at times that do not match your activity.

Do not assume every entry is malicious. A widget, notification action, scheduled task, or feature you enabled may explain it. If the timing remains unexplained, open the app’s permissions and reduce access, then test the feature you actually need.

3. Review permissions both by app and by category

Checking only the assistant’s app page can miss another app that supplies the same AI capability. Check the assistant or host app directly, then review each sensitive category to find every app with access.

Review one app

  1. Open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions.
  2. Read the Allowed, Not allowed, and, where shown, unused or automatically reset permissions.
  3. Tap each sensitive permission and choose the least-access option that preserves the function you want.

Google documents this app-level route in Change app permissions on your Android phone. If your phone uses a different path, search Settings for Permission manager.

Review one permission category

  1. Open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager where that path is available.
  2. Choose a category such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos and videos, Files, Calendar, Phone, Call logs, SMS, Notifications, or Nearby devices.
  3. Open each app listed as allowed and decide whether its access matches a feature you use.

Category review is especially useful when the AI function is embedded in a system app, keyboard, gallery, recorder, or camera rather than presented as a separate assistant app.

Choose the narrowest useful setting

Permission choice Function retained Exposure and limitations
Allow only while using the app The feature can use the resource during active use. Background access is restricted compared with an “all the time” grant; a feature that must run continuously may stop working.
Ask every time You can approve access for an individual action. Extra prompts interrupt the workflow, but the app does not receive standing permission.
Allow all the time Location-dependent functions can work in the background. This is the broadest location option and is rarely necessary for a question-and-answer action.
Don’t allow Nothing that depends on that resource. Voice input, camera questions, contact-aware tasks, or location results may fail or lose context.

Android may present these choices differently by permission and version. Google’s documented location choices include All the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. Make a change, run the specific AI feature you care about, and keep the permission only if the result is worth the access.

Consider device-wide camera and microphone switches

Supported Android configurations can disable camera or microphone access for the entire device through Privacy controls. This is useful when you want a hard stop during meetings or other sensitive situations, but it also blocks legitimate calls, recording, accessibility tools, and camera applications. Treat the device-wide switch as an emergency or situational control, not a substitute for app-by-app review.

4. Audit Gemini and the Google app together

On Android, do not look only for a separately named Gemini entry. Google says Gemini’s mobile assistant capabilities are hosted by the Google app, and Gemini can use permissions granted to that app. Review the Google app’s permissions as well as any Gemini entry visible on your phone. The relationship and examples are documented in Google’s Manage your Google app permissions help and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

Map permissions to the feature you use

  • Microphone: needed for voice input. If you type every request, removing microphone access may be reasonable.
  • Camera: needed for camera-based questions or visual input. It is not universally required for text chat.
  • Contacts: can support contact-aware tasks and suggestions. Remove it if you do not ask the assistant to work with people in your address book.
  • Location: can improve location-dependent answers. Use while-app access or deny it when precise location is not part of your use case.
  • Calendar, phone, call logs, and related access: can enable calls, calendar actions, or contact suggestions. Keep only the permissions associated with tasks you deliberately use.

There is no single permission list that is always required or always unnecessary. The right setting depends on whether you use voice input, camera questions, contact-aware actions, calls, calendar tasks, or location-dependent answers.

Test after each change

  1. Remove or narrow one permission.
  2. Start the exact Gemini task you normally perform.
  3. Note the error or missing context, if any.
  4. Restore only that permission if the lost function matters to you; otherwise leave it restricted.

This one-change-at-a-time method prevents you from granting every permission back just because several unrelated features stopped working at once.

5. Separate Android permissions from Gemini service and account controls

Android controls whether an app can reach a phone resource. Gemini’s service controls govern additional processing associated with your account and the content you provide. They are different decisions.

Understand the categories Google describes

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes system and device information that the mobile experience may process, including call and message logs, contacts, installed apps, language preferences, screen content, and overlay page context or URL. It also describes precise location processing when permission is granted. These are categories Google says may be used to provide assistant context; they are not a claim that every category is collected during every interaction.

For example, an overlay can use screen content or page context when you invoke it over another application, while a contact-related request may use contact information. The fact that Android shows no recent camera access does not mean an account service never processes text, screen content, or other information you submit.

Review service-level choices

  1. Open the current Gemini app or web settings associated with your Google account.
  2. Review Gemini Apps activity or equivalent history controls and the retention options offered on your account.
  3. Inspect connected services and integrations, especially those that can expose calendar, contacts, communications, or other account data.
  4. Read the current privacy explanation before enabling an integration or using an overlay on sensitive content.

Labels and locations can change as Google updates Gemini. Use the privacy controls presented in your account rather than assuming that disabling a phone permission deletes existing activity or prevents processing of information you already submitted.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

6. Use Google Play’s Data safety section as a second disclosure, not a guarantee

Google Play’s Data safety section presents developer-provided information about collection and sharing for an app’s Google Play distribution. The label and its scope are explained in Google Play’s Data safety guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret the label

  • Read the developer’s collection and sharing declarations alongside the Android permission screen and the app’s privacy notice.
  • Check the app version, your region, age settings, and how you plan to use the app; Google notes that these factors can affect disclosures.
  • Remember that on-device or ephemeral processing can be treated differently under the label rules.
  • Do not treat a Data safety entry as an independent technical audit or a guarantee that no data ever leaves the phone.

Permissions show what the operating system can authorize. Data safety describes what the developer says about collection and sharing. Neither view alone explains every service-side use of prompts, account information, or content voluntarily supplied to an AI feature.

7. Check for an on-device-only AI processing option

Some AI phones expose a setting that keeps supported processing on the device. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip6 user guide, for example, documents Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device for supported Galaxy AI features. The same guide notes that some features need online processing.

Apply the setting carefully

  1. Open Settings and search for AI, Galaxy AI, or Process data only on device.
  2. Read which features the toggle covers and whether it is enabled globally or per feature.
  3. Enable on-device-only processing if keeping data local matters more than full feature availability.
  4. Test translation, editing, summarization, or other AI functions you use; an online-required feature may become unavailable or behave differently.

This documented option applies to the supported configuration in that guide, not automatically to every AI phone, model, software release, or feature. If you cannot find the setting, consult the current manual for your exact device rather than assuming that no local-processing option exists.

Compare privacy choices by the trade-offs that matter

When deciding whether to keep a permission, compare the actual feature benefit with five practical factors: functionality retained, background exposure, control scope, visibility of recent access, and processing location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Ask yourself Typical privacy-favoring choice
Functionality Which specific task fails without this permission? Deny access that supports no feature you use.
Background access Must the assistant work when it is not open? Use while-app access instead of an always-on grant where available.
Scope Can I restrict one app, or must I block the whole device? Prefer app-level restriction; use device-wide camera or microphone blocking for sensitive periods.
History visibility How far back can I investigate access? Check the dashboard regularly because Android 13 documents seven days and Android 12 documents 24 hours.
Processing location Can this task run locally, or does it need online processing? Choose on-device-only processing when supported and acceptable.

Common problems and how to recover

The menu is missing

Search Settings for Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, or the app name. A manufacturer may place the dashboard under Security and privacy, and some controls require a newer Android release.

The assistant stopped responding after a change

Return to the app’s permission page and restore only the permission named in the error. If several permissions were changed together, re-enable them one at a time and retest so you know which access is genuinely needed.

The dashboard shows no access, but you still worry about data exposure

The dashboard covers operating-system permission events. It does not show every account or service-side operation, nor does it prove that text, prompts, screen content, or previously submitted files are never processed. Review the assistant’s activity and connected-service controls separately.

A Data safety label conflicts with what you observe

Check the app version, region, account age category, and the developer’s privacy notice. The label is a developer disclosure with stated scope limits, not an independent audit. Contact the developer if the discrepancy concerns a material privacy promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable privacy-audit checklist

  1. Record the phone model, Android version, and AI service.
  2. Open Privacy Dashboard and inspect camera, microphone, location, and other sensitive categories.
  3. Review the assistant’s permissions by app.
  4. Review Permission manager by category to find embedded or host apps.
  5. For Gemini, inspect the Google app’s permissions as well as any Gemini entry.
  6. Change broad grants to while-use, ask-every-time, or deny when the feature allows it.
  7. Test the AI tasks you actually use after each change.
  8. Review Gemini activity, connected services, and other account-level privacy controls.
  9. Read the app’s Data safety entry and privacy notice with their disclosure limits in mind.
  10. Search for an on-device-only processing option and verify which features it covers.
  11. Repeat the review after a major operating-system, assistant, or phone firmware update.
