Windows memory compression keeps selected data in RAM in a smaller form so the system may need to retrieve it from disk less often. It is a Windows 10-era feature documented by Microsoft in September 2015—not proof that every page of memory is always compressed, and not by itself a sign that your PC needs more RAM.
What is memory compression in Windows?
When Windows trims memory from a process’s working set, it can preserve some of that data in compressed form in physical memory. If the data is needed again, Windows can use the in-memory copy rather than having to retrieve it from disk. Microsoft described the goal as making hard page faults less frequent. The explanation appears on Microsoft’s September 16, 2015, account of the Windows 10 memory manager.

Memory compression is selective, not a claim that Windows continually compresses all RAM. Microsoft’s cited description explains the feature’s purpose but does not establish a general compression ratio or performance gain. A percentage or ratio found elsewhere should not be treated as a universal Windows result.

Compressed pages remain in system-managed memory, so the memory used to hold them may be associated with the System process in Task Manager. That reading describes where Windows accounts for the memory; it does not necessarily mean the System process is running an unusually demanding application.

The number is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. Interpret it alongside your workload, available physical memory, committed bytes, responsiveness, and disk activity. Microsoft’s guidance on page-file usage and memory-management counters cautions against reading a single memory or paging figure in isolation.
Is compressed memory the same as the page file?
No. Compression keeps selected data in RAM in a smaller representation. The page file is disk-backed storage that can support infrequently accessed modified pages and may also be needed for crash dumps. Microsoft explains the page file’s separate role in its page-file overview.

| Mechanism | Where the data is held | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Memory compression | RAM | Stores selected memory in compressed form, with the aim of reducing hard page faults. |
| Page file | Disk-backed storage | Provides backing for infrequently accessed modified pages and can support crash dumps. |
A compressed-memory reading is therefore not the same as seeing data written to pagefile.sys. Paging and compression are related parts of memory management, but they are distinct mechanisms.

Does a high compressed-memory reading mean you need more RAM?
Not on its own. Consider whether the computer is actually constrained during the work you do, rather than treating one Task Manager value as a purchase trigger. Look for a pattern that links memory pressure to problems you experience.

- Responsiveness: Does the computer remain usable during your ordinary workload, or do slowdowns recur?
- Physical memory and commit: Check available memory and committed bytes, rather than relying on compressed memory alone.
- Disk activity and hard faults: See whether they coincide with the slowdown. A page-fault counter needs context; a single reading does not establish a performance problem.
- Workload: Does the same set of applications repeatedly exceed what the device can handle?
Microsoft identifies Performance Monitor counters as useful diagnostic inputs, while warning that page-file usage alone does not prove a performance issue. Its guidance on page-file interpretation and memory counters can help frame those checks.

- VMMap breaks down a process’s committed virtual memory and working set.
These tools help examine where memory is being used; they do not, by themselves, show that compression is harmful or that a memory-cleaning utility is needed.

Should you disable memory compression or upgrade RAM?
A compressed-memory figure alone is not a reason to disable the feature. The documented purpose is to retain selected data in RAM while making hard page faults less frequent; the available Microsoft account does not establish that disabling it improves performance generally.
Consider a RAM upgrade only if the checks above point to a recurring capacity constraint and your particular device supports an upgrade. Verify the machine’s supported memory type, limits, and upgradeability before choosing hardware. No particular computer configuration or compatible memory module is established here.
