Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you see “Recovery: It looks like Windows didn’t load correctly,” Windows has reached its recovery environment after a startup problem; the message does not identify the cause. Restart once if this happened only once. If the screen returns, choose See advanced repair options and try Startup Repair before considering options that can remove files or apps.
What the recovery message means
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can start automatically after repeated failures to start normally. The screen is a sign of a startup failure, not proof that a particular update, driver, disk, or system file is responsible. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance describes how to reach its recovery tools.

Choose the next step based on what happened just before the failure. A recent update may point toward uninstalling updates; a recent system change and an available restore point may make System Restore a better fit. If you do not know what changed, begin with the built-in startup repair tool.
Try the least disruptive recovery steps first
1. Restart once if the failure may be temporary
Select Restart my PC if the problem has occurred only once. If the same recovery screen appears again, stop repeating restarts and move to the repair options.

2. Run Startup Repair
- On the recovery screen, select See advanced repair options.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select your Windows installation or account if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions. If asked for a BitLocker recovery key, enter the key for the encrypted PC.
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a built-in tool that checks for common problems preventing Windows from starting and attempts repairs. Examples include missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. Those are issues the tool may address, not a diagnosis of your computer. Startup Repair may not fix every startup failure. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
Choose a rollback if the timing points to a recent change
Uninstall a recent Windows update
If Windows stopped starting soon after an update, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and select the available update-removal option. Microsoft says this can help when a recent update caused the problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix and some updates cannot be uninstalled. Its Windows recovery options guide explains the available paths and their effects.

Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists
If the trouble began after installing software or a driver, changing settings, or updating Windows, System Restore can return system files, registry settings, and installed programs to a restore point from before the change. It does not affect personal files, but it can roll back programs and system changes. In the restore wizard, review Scan for affected programs when available. From WinRE, find it under Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. A restore point must exist, and an encrypted device may require its BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft details the process in its System Restore instructions.
Point-in-time restore on eligible Windows 11 systems
Microsoft also documents Point-in-time restore for eligible systems running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. It rolls the system back to a recent automatic restore point and can include personal files. That broader rollback effect differs from System Restore, which preserves personal files. Availability depends on the Windows version and device setup; do not assume the option will appear on every PC.

Compare recovery options before choosing
| Option | Best fit | Personal-file impact | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | A one-off startup failure | No intended file change | If the recovery screen returns, move to repair tools rather than repeating restarts. |
| Startup Repair | Windows will not start | Intended to repair startup; Microsoft does not promise a successful outcome | Requires WinRE and may ask for a BitLocker key. |
| Uninstall Updates | The failure began after a recent update | Microsoft says personal files and apps are not affected | Some updates cannot be removed; it is not a universal fix. |
| System Restore | A restore point predates the problem | Personal files are kept; system changes and installed programs may roll back | A suitable restore point must exist; check affected programs. |
| Reset this PC | Earlier repair attempts fail | You can choose to keep personal files or remove everything; apps and settings are removed | More disruptive than the earlier options. Back up first if possible and verify the selected mode. |
| Reinstall from installation media | Recovery options fail or are unavailable | Depends on the installation choice; a clean install removes files, apps, and settings | Requires bootable media and another working PC to create it; follow Windows and device-maker instructions. |
The comparison reflects Microsoft’s descriptions of recovery options, System Restore, and the Windows Recovery Environment.
Leave Reset or reinstall until earlier options fail
Reset this PC is more disruptive than uninstalling an update or using System Restore. Depending on the mode you select, Reset can keep personal files or remove everything, but it removes apps and settings. Read the on-screen explanation carefully before confirming. Back up your data first if you can make the PC accessible.

If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, contact its IT department when recovery options do not resolve the issue.

Use installation media if the recovery tools are unavailable
If the PC cannot start and you cannot reach WinRE, use another working PC to create Windows installation media. Microsoft specifies a USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage for this purpose. Creating the media erases the selected USB drive, so back up its contents or use an empty drive. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media recovery instructions.

Keep the BitLocker recovery key available: encrypted PCs can require it to use certain recovery tools. Microsoft’s WinRE guidance explains access to the environment and its tools.
What to record if the problem continues
The recovery message alone cannot identify why Windows failed. If the available recovery options do not help, note the exact stop code or Startup Repair result, what changed shortly before the failure, the PC model, and whether Safe Mode starts. These details can make later troubleshooting more specific; they do not establish a cause by themselves.
The core recovery tools described here apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Check Microsoft’s recovery options information for current version-specific details.
