Required diagnostic data is the minimum Windows sends to Microsoft about a PC’s configuration, reliability, compatibility, updates, and basic errors. Optional diagnostic data includes that baseline plus broader usage, health, connectivity, Microsoft-browser activity, and richer crash information. On a personally managed Windows 11 PC, you can choose the level at Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Sending only required data does not make Windows less secure or prevent normal operation, but it gives Microsoft less context when diagnosing problems.
Required and optional diagnostic data at a glance
Windows diagnostic data is telemetry Microsoft uses to understand how Windows is configured and performing in the field. It supports security and update readiness, compatibility analysis, reliability work, troubleshooting, and product improvement. The two consumer-facing levels are cumulative: selecting optional data does not replace required data; it adds to it.

| Choice | What it generally covers | Why Microsoft uses it | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Required | Device identity and configuration details, capabilities, compatibility and update-readiness signals, reliability and health information, and basic error reporting. | To keep Windows secure and current, understand which configurations work or fail, and investigate fundamental reliability and compatibility issues. | It is not a promise that no other Windows feature sends data, nor a guarantee that every error field is free of context from the failing operation. |
| Optional | Everything in required, plus additional device, connectivity, configuration and health detail; app and feature usage; browsing history in Microsoft browsers; and enhanced error reports, which can include crash-related memory state. | To provide broader usage and failure context that can help Microsoft identify and fix some problems faster and improve features. | It is not required for security, updates, or ordinary operation. Microsoft may sample some optional events rather than collect every item from every device. |
Microsoft’s version-specific reference lists the required diagnostic events and fields for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2; individual event lists and controls can change with a Windows release. See Microsoft’s required-event reference for the current field-level documentation.

What required diagnostic data contains
Required data is the baseline level Microsoft describes as necessary to understand whether a Windows device is configured correctly and operating as expected. It is principally about the machine and its state, rather than a general record of everything you do.

Device configuration and capabilities
Signals can describe the Windows edition and build, hardware and driver configuration, available capabilities, and settings that affect compatibility. This lets Microsoft distinguish, for example, whether a problem is associated with a particular hardware class, driver combination, or operating-system configuration instead of treating every installation as identical.
Compatibility and update readiness
Windows needs configuration and health signals to assess whether an update is suitable for a device and to identify configurations that may fail during installation or after a restart. Required diagnostics therefore support update servicing and compatibility work; they are not an optional add-on to the update mechanism.
Reliability, health, and basic errors
Required reporting includes information used to understand crashes, failures, and reliability trends at a basic level. The exact event and field inventory is release-specific, so a field documented for Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 should not automatically be assumed to exist unchanged in another release.
Required data should be understood as a minimum diagnostic set, not as a complete description of every data flow from Windows. Separate features and services can have their own data practices and controls.
What optional diagnostic data adds
Optional data includes the required baseline and supplies additional context. Microsoft’s description groups that extra context into several kinds of information.
More device, connectivity, configuration, and health detail
Optional events can provide a richer picture of how the device connects, which components are active, and how features behave over time. The additional context can help correlate a failure with a network condition, configuration combination, or health state that basic reporting cannot distinguish.

App and feature usage
Optional collection can include information about how Windows apps and features are used. This is usage telemetry, not a statement that Microsoft receives the contents of everything displayed in every app. The specific events and fields depend on the Windows release and the collection rules in effect.
Browsing activity in Microsoft browsers
Microsoft identifies browsing history in its own browsers as an example of information that can fall within optional diagnostic data. That does not mean every browsing session is necessarily sent: Microsoft says some optional data is sampled, and the exact items collected can change. Treat the setting as permission for a broader category, not as a guarantee of collection for every event.
Enhanced error reports and crash memory
Optional error reporting can contain enhanced crash context, including memory state associated with a failure. Microsoft warns that a crash report may unintentionally include parts of a file that was open when the crash occurred. This is a qualification about enhanced crash reporting, not a claim that every optional event contains file content or that ordinary required fields are file copies.
Does optional data include the contents of your files?
The safest distinction is between ordinary diagnostic fields and enhanced crash material. Required documentation emphasizes device, configuration, capability, health, compatibility, update, and basic error information. Optional reporting can add crash-related memory state, and that memory can contain fragments of content present in the process at the time of a crash.
- Do not interpret “required” as a blanket promise that no diagnostic record can ever contain contextual data from a failing operation.
- Do not interpret “optional” as meaning every event includes personal documents, messages, or browser contents.
- If a crash involves sensitive material, enhanced reporting is the category that deserves particular caution because memory-state data can capture portions of what was open.
Microsoft’s optional diagnostic data documentation describes the categories and examples, while its Windows diagnostics and privacy guidance explains the consumer controls and their limits.

No. Microsoft states: “Regardless of whether you choose to send Optional diagnostic data, your device will be just as secure and will operate normally.” Required data remains enabled, and Windows continues to receive the baseline information Microsoft uses for security, servicing, compatibility, and reliability work.

The trade-off is diagnostic context, not protection. Optional information may help Microsoft identify a problem more quickly or separate one failure pattern from another, but Microsoft does not describe optional diagnostics as a prerequisite for security updates, ordinary Windows operation, or device usability.
How to change the setting in Windows 11
On a personally managed, supported Windows 11 installation, use the following path:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Open Diagnostics & feedback.
- Review the Diagnostic data choice and select the available required-only or optional level.
- On the same page, review the links for Diagnostic Data Viewer and deletion controls if you want to inspect or remove locally associated diagnostic data.
Labels and available switches can vary by Windows release, edition, account type, and device-management policy. If the page says a setting is hidden or managed by an organization, the local account cannot override that policy.

Windows 10 path and support status
Windows 10’s documented path is Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The path is therefore useful as version context for an existing installation, not as the recommended current consumer walkthrough. Windows 11 is the relevant navigation for a present-day supported PC, and controls can differ between releases.
How to see diagnostic data with Diagnostic Data Viewer
Windows includes Diagnostic Data Viewer as an inspection aid. You can open it from the Diagnostics & feedback settings page when the feature is available, then review the diagnostic records exposed while the viewer is running.
What the viewer can show
The viewer can display diagnostic data available during its current operation, helping you see the kinds of events and fields Windows is presenting for inspection. Microsoft also says the viewer can indicate when a device is in a sample for optional diagnostic data and identify which sampled data is being collected.

What the viewer cannot prove
It is not a permanent, exhaustive server-side history. Microsoft states: “The Diagnostic Data Viewer does not allow you to view your diagnostic data history.” The viewer is real-time while open; it does not establish that you have seen every record Microsoft may retain, process, or receive through another service.
For a fuller explanation of the viewer and Windows privacy controls, consult the Windows Privacy Compliance Guide and Microsoft’s support documentation.
Sampling means optional data is not collected uniformly
Optional does not mean that every optional event is collected from every device at every moment. Microsoft describes sampling: a subset of devices or events may be selected for particular optional data. The Diagnostic Data Viewer can indicate that a device is in a sample and which sampled data is being collected.
This explains why two otherwise similar PCs may not show identical optional events. It also means the setting should be read as a collection level and eligibility choice, not as a promise of a fixed volume or a complete list of every event generated by the operating system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How deletion works—and what it does not erase
Windows provides deletion controls from the Diagnostics & feedback page. A local delete action removes diagnostic data associated with the device setting’s supported deletion process, but it is not a universal eraser.
Recommended Free Tools
- Deleting diagnostic data from the device does not delete data associated with a Microsoft account.
- Deletion does not stop future diagnostic data from being sent while the diagnostic setting remains enabled.
- An organization may hold a copy or apply its own retention and processing rules.
Use deletion when you want to clear the locally available diagnostic data, then separately review account and organizational policies if your concern is data held elsewhere. Microsoft’s diagnostics and privacy support page documents these limitations.

Why the controls may be unavailable on a work or school PC
On an organization-managed device, Windows can receive diagnostic settings through Group Policy or mobile-device-management policy. The administrator may force a level, hide the consumer control, or restrict which diagnostic features are available. Edition, Windows release, and policy configuration affect the exact options.
If the page reports that settings are managed by an organization, contact the IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the control. Administrators can consult Microsoft’s organization configuration guidance and the System Policy CSP reference for policy-specific behavior.
What this setting does not control
The required-versus-optional diagnostic choice has a defined scope. It does not switch off every form of data processing in Windows.
Required service data is separate
Microsoft documents required service data separately. Service data is information a connected feature or online service needs to function, such as requests, configuration needed by that service, or service-operation signals. It should not be treated as another name for the diagnostic-data level.
Other privacy settings have their own controls
Features such as activity history, personalized offers, account-connected experiences, and organization enrollment can have separate settings or processing purposes. Turning optional diagnostic data off does not automatically change those controls. Review the relevant Windows setting for each feature instead of assuming one switch governs all data flows.
Choosing the right level for your situation
Choose required-only when minimizing optional telemetry is the priority
- You want the smallest consumer diagnostic level Microsoft offers while retaining the required baseline.
- You are comfortable troubleshooting with less usage and crash context available to Microsoft.
- You still need normal Windows operation, security updates, and compatibility servicing; Microsoft says those continue.
Choose optional when extra troubleshooting context is worth the privacy trade-off
- You are participating in troubleshooting where richer health, usage, connectivity, or crash context could help identify a problem.
- You accept that optional categories can include Microsoft-browser browsing history and enhanced crash memory, subject to sampling and release-specific rules.
- You want to contribute broader usage signals that may help Microsoft improve features.
Check policy first on managed hardware
If the choice is missing, disabled, or labelled as managed, your decision is being made by an administrator. The practical next step is a policy question for IT, not a change in the local Settings page.
Common misconceptions and their corrections
| Misconception | More accurate interpretation |
|---|---|
| “Required” means Windows sends no data. | Required is the baseline diagnostic level. Other Windows features and required service data have separate scopes. |
| Turning optional off disables security updates. | Microsoft says the device remains just as secure and operates normally with required-only diagnostics. |
| Optional means Microsoft receives every action and every file. | Optional adds categories such as usage, Microsoft-browser browsing history, and enhanced crash context; Microsoft also describes sampling and does not say every event contains file content. |
| The Diagnostic Data Viewer is a complete audit log. | It shows data available while it runs and does not provide diagnostic-data history. |
| Deleting data removes every copy everywhere. | Device deletion does not remove Microsoft-account data, does not stop future sending, and may not remove an organization’s copy. |
Release and edition caveats
Windows diagnostic event lists, labels, and controls are maintained by release. Microsoft’s current required-event page covers Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, while support guidance describes behavior that can vary by edition and servicing state. Treat a screenshot or instruction written for an older build as a clue, not as proof that your current Settings page will match it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor the current definitions, start with Microsoft’s optional-data reference, then use the required-event and field list for Windows 11 release-specific detail. If your device is managed, the organization and policy references are more authoritative than the consumer switch.
A practical privacy check before changing the switch
- Identify whether the PC is personally managed or enrolled with work or school management.
- Confirm the Windows version and use the matching Settings path.
- Read the optional categories that matter to you, especially Microsoft-browser browsing history and enhanced crash memory.
- Decide whether broader troubleshooting context is worth those categories for your use case.
- Set the available level, then open Diagnostic Data Viewer if you want to inspect the data exposed during the current session.
- Use the page’s deletion control if you need to clear locally associated diagnostic data, remembering its account, organization, and future-sending limits.
- Review separate privacy settings for services or features whose data scope is outside diagnostics.
Bottom line
Required diagnostic data is the minimum Windows diagnostic level for configuration, capability, compatibility, update readiness, reliability, health, and basic error reporting. Optional data includes that baseline and adds richer usage, connectivity, health, Microsoft-browser, and crash context. Required-only is a legitimate privacy choice: Microsoft says it does not reduce security or normal operation. Optional can improve the context available for diagnosis, but it is neither mandatory nor a complete description of all data Windows may process.
