Windows Defender Settings to Reduce the Risk of Malware Infections

Check the built-in Windows protections that matter: active antivirus, Defender settings, Firewall profiles, Controlled folder access, and scans.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, the sensible baseline is to keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time, cloud-delivered, and tamper protection on; keep security intelligence up to date; and leave Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled. Windows Security is the app where these built-in controls live. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is its antivirus component—not the separate Microsoft Defender app offered with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. The controls you see can differ by Windows version, edition, active antivirus provider, and organization policy.

Start by checking which antivirus is active

Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open Virus & threat protection. Check the protection status and which provider is protecting the device. A compatible third-party antivirus can automatically put Microsoft Defender Antivirus into disabled mode, so an old screenshot or a familiar menu is not proof that Defender is currently active. Microsoft describes the app and its protection areas in its Windows Security app overview.

If another antivirus is active, use that product’s status and settings to confirm your protection. Avoid trying to force two real-time antivirus providers to run at once; Windows may manage Defender’s active state automatically.

Keep Defender’s core protections enabled

In Virus & threat protection, open Virus & threat protection settings > Manage settings. Check the following switches if Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active provider. The labels or their location may vary slightly.

Real-time protection

Leave Real-time protection on. Microsoft says it monitors for threats and scans files and programs as they are accessed or run. When it is off, files opened or downloaded during that period are not scanned in real time. Microsoft notes that the setting may be turned off temporarily and turns back on automatically after a short while; do not treat that temporary window as protected time.

Cloud-delivered protection

Leave Cloud-delivered protection on if you want Defender to receive updated protection improvements while the device is online. Like other cloud-connected features, it depends on connectivity to provide that benefit.

Tamper protection

Leave Tamper protection on. Microsoft Support says, “Tamper protection is a feature that helps prevent malicious apps from changing important Microsoft Defender Antivirus settings.” If a setting is unavailable or locked, especially on a work or school device, the organization may control it; ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy. See Microsoft’s guidance on Virus and threat protection in the Windows Security app.

Sample submission and privacy

Review Automatic sample submission rather than treating it as a privacy-neutral switch. Microsoft says suspicious files may be sent to help check for threats; if a requested file contains personal information, users are alerted so they can decide whether to send it. Choose the setting in light of that trade-off and your organization’s rules.

Keep security intelligence up to date

Security intelligence contains information about recent threats that Defender uses when scans run. Windows Update normally downloads it automatically, but you can check manually: open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates. Keeping this information current helps scans use newer threat definitions; it is distinct from updating Windows itself, though Windows Update handles routine delivery.

Use Controlled folder access selectively

Controlled folder access, under Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection, can protect common folders such as Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, and Desktop from changes by unknown or untrusted apps. It can be useful for important files, but it may block legitimate programs that need to write there.

If an app is blocked, verify that it is trustworthy and confirm its path before allowing it through. An allowed app can access protected folders, so approve only the app you actually need—not a broad set of programs to make alerts disappear. Microsoft’s overview of staying protected with Windows Security explains this protection.

Leave Microsoft Defender Firewall on, especially on public Wi-Fi

Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection and check the profile for the network in use. Keep the firewall on. Windows distinguishes Private networks you trust from Public networks where other connected devices are not trusted; public Wi-Fi should use the Public profile and its stricter controls. Microsoft’s Firewall and network protection guide describes the profiles.

If a legitimate app cannot connect, look for a narrow allowed-app exception for that app and network profile rather than turning the firewall off. A managed device may prevent profile or rule changes; follow the organization’s instructions.

Review app and browser protections

Open Windows Security > App & browser control and review the protections shown on the device, including SmartScreen-related checks and potentially unwanted app protections when available. Windows 11 may also show Smart App Control. Availability and labels vary by Windows version and device, so use the controls actually present rather than assuming every PC has the same switches. For Microsoft’s explanation of potentially unwanted software, see Protect your PC from unwanted software.

Scan a file or check the whole device

Scan one file

In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender (on some Windows 11 menus, open Show more options to find it). This is useful when one download or document is in question. Microsoft’s item-scanning instructions cover the available route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scan beyond a single item

For a broader concern, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and start a Quick scan. To choose a fuller or targeted scan, open Scan options and select the option that fits what you need to check. The exact choices can depend on the Windows configuration.

Avoid exclusions unless there is a specific, verified need

Excluding a file, folder, file type, or process means Defender no longer checks that excluded item during real-time scanning. That can leave the device and its data more exposed, so exclusions are not a general performance tweak. If a documented compatibility issue makes one unavoidable, use the narrowest scope possible and remove it when it is no longer needed. Microsoft’s Defender settings guidance explains the effect of exclusions.

Why a setting may be missing or unavailable

  • Another antivirus is active: Windows may disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus automatically while a compatible provider protects the device.
  • Your organization manages the device: Work or school policy can hide or lock antivirus, firewall, or app-control settings. Contact the administrator.
  • Your Windows version or edition differs: Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not expose every control in the same way, and some Windows 11 features, including Smart App Control, may not appear on every device.

The separate Microsoft Defender app is not required to configure these built-in Windows protections. Microsoft’s Getting started with Microsoft Defender describes that distinct app, which is included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family.
