Windows Crash Dump Settings: What to Enable for Easier Troubleshooting

Use Automatic memory dump with a system-managed pagefile for general Windows troubleshooting. Here’s how to configure dumps and check storage requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Windows users, select Automatic memory dump and leave the paging file system-managed. This gives troubleshooters the same diagnostic information as a kernel memory dump while letting Windows adjust paging-file sizing. Check that the Windows drive has enough free space. Choose a larger dump only when a support professional or a specific debugging need calls for the extra detail and storage.

Which crash dump setting should you choose?

A crash dump is a snapshot of system memory and crash details captured when Windows stops unexpectedly. It is evidence for diagnosis, not a repair; a dump may need to be interpreted alongside other symptoms, and some causes require technical analysis.

Dump type Diagnostic detail Storage and pagefile considerations Separate crash records
Automatic memory dump Same information as a kernel memory dump, according to Microsoft’s Windows client dump documentation. With a system-managed pagefile, Windows can initially use less than the amount of installed RAM and adjust sizing after repeated crashes. See Microsoft’s pagefile sizing guidance. Uses kernel-dump behavior; configure the small-dump option if retaining separate compact crash records is the priority.
Kernel memory dump Captures memory used by the Windows kernel, HAL and kernel-mode drivers; excludes unallocated memory and user-mode application memory. Microsoft says, “For most purposes, this crash dump is the most useful.” See Microsoft’s Kernel Memory Dump documentation. Usually smaller than a complete dump, but actual size varies with kernel memory use. Pagefile requirements vary too; do not assume every system needs a pagefile equal to installed RAM. Does not provide the small-dump option’s compact per-crash files.
Small memory dump (minidump) Includes limited crash information, such as Stop code details, loaded drivers, and the crashing thread’s context and stack. It may not capture a cause outside that thread’s immediate context. See Microsoft’s small-dump documentation. Microsoft lists a 1 MB minimum pagefile for a small dump; this is a technical minimum, not a guarantee that every setup will successfully write one. Useful when storage is constrained and you want separate records for multiple crashes.
Complete memory dump Captures system memory, including memory from processes running at the time of the crash. Microsoft notes that larger files contain more information and may make the cause easier to find. See Microsoft’s dump-type comparison. Has the greatest storage demands among these choices. Microsoft lists a pagefile requirement of RAM plus 257 MB. Not the compact, multiple-record option; use it when the additional memory data is specifically needed.
Active memory dump A complete-style capture that filters pages considered less useful for troubleshooting. Advanced option; storage use depends on the resulting capture. Choose only for a defined diagnostic requirement.

Automatic memory dump is the practical general-purpose choice. A small dump trades detail for compact files and a history of crashes; a kernel dump is useful for many kernel and driver failures; and a complete dump is usually unnecessary for ordinary home troubleshooting unless support requests it.

How to enable or change crash dump settings

  1. Open Advanced system settings. One route is Control Panel > System and Security > System, then select the advanced system settings link.
  2. In System Properties, open the Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
  3. Under Write debugging information, choose Automatic memory dump for general troubleshooting. Choose another type only to meet a specific storage or diagnostic need.
  4. Check the dump path and make sure the Windows volume has enough free space for the paging file and dump output. Larger dumps normally use %SystemRoot%Memory.dmp; small dumps are typically saved in %SystemRoot%Minidump. Windows versions may label or arrange these settings somewhat differently.
  5. Leave the pagefile system-managed unless you have a well-understood reason to configure it manually. Restart if Windows prompts you or the change does not take effect.
  6. After a crash, look for a .dmp file in the configured location. Microsoft documents WinDbg and KD for analysis; interpreting a dump can require symbols and debugging experience. A support professional may ask you to provide it.

Why the pagefile and free space matter

The pagefile on the boot volume is part of the crash-dump capture process, even if the final dump file is redirected to another location. An undersized or unavailable paging or dedicated dump area can prevent Windows from writing a useful dump. The exact requirement depends on dump type and system use.

  • Diagnostic Tool: Enables communication between your vehicle and VAG-COM Windows diagnostic software, allowing you to read and clear fault codes, perform adaptations, and more.
  • Microsoft lists a 1 MB minimum pagefile for a small dump.
  • For a kernel dump, the required space depends on kernel virtual-memory use.
  • For a complete dump, Microsoft lists a pagefile requirement of installed RAM plus 257 MB.
  • For an automatic dump, sizing depends on kernel memory use and crash history. Microsoft says Windows initially selects a smaller pagefile and may increase it after another crash within four weeks.

These are Microsoft’s documented technical requirements and sizing behaviors, not a universal fixed-size formula for every PC. Moving the output dump to another drive does not remove the boot-volume pagefile requirement. Keeping the pagefile system-managed is generally simpler than trying to predict a manual size.

Where Windows saves dumps—and what to do if none appears

By default, a larger dump is typically written as %SystemRoot%Memory.dmp, while small dumps are typically stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump. The configured destination may differ, so check Startup and Recovery settings rather than assuming the defaults apply.

If a crash produces no dump, check these likely causes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dump writing is enabled and the selected dump type is the one you expect.
  • The boot-volume pagefile or dedicated dump space is adequate for that dump type.
  • The boot volume has enough free disk space for pagefile use and dump output.
  • Windows was able to complete writing the dump before the system restarted.

Microsoft recommends kernel or complete dump debugging as a last resort after standard troubleshooting is exhausted. A dump does not always reveal the root cause by itself.

Handle dump files as sensitive data

A complete dump can include data from processes that were running when the crash occurred. Treat any dump as potentially sensitive: do not post it publicly, and share it only through a trusted support channel.
