Before using an at-home intense pulsed light (IPL) device, remove visible hair using a method and schedule allowed by that exact model, then treat only clean, completely dry, calm skin. Check the device’s suitability rules, exclusions, sun guidance and patch-test instructions first; preparation details differ between manufacturers.
Prepare for your device, not a generic IPL routine
Read the manual for your exact model before preparing the treatment area. Check its skin-tone and hair-colour suitability guidance, excluded conditions and body areas, permitted hair-removal methods, tanning and sun instructions, and whether it requires a patch test. These requirements can vary by device, so one manufacturer’s timing should not be treated as a rule for every IPL device.

Follow the preparation sequence
- Check suitability and instructions. Confirm that your current skin tone, hair colour and intended treatment area are allowed for your model. Review its exclusions and patch-test directions.
- Remove visible hair using an approved method. Follow the timing in your manual. For example, Braun US recommends shaving 12 to 24 hours before treatment. Philips Lumea guidance permits waxing, shaving or epilation, and says to wait 24 hours after waxing. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable instructions. - Inspect the skin. Do not flash over cuts, open wounds, broken skin, inflammation or irritation. Wait until shaving irritation or an injury has resolved, and follow your manual. Braun also advises against intense exfoliation such as microdermabrasion before treatment. Braun IPL safety.
- Wash the area and dry it fully. Remove water, oils, lotion, cream, deodorant and other product residue. Philips advises: “Make sure no water, oil, cream, deodorant or body milk is left on your skin.” Philips US preparation FAQ.
- Check tanning and sun guidance. Follow the manual’s directions for tanning and sun exposure, and do not treat tanned skin unless your device’s instructions say it is suitable for your current skin tone. Braun warns against tanning booths, sunbeds, spray tans and tanning creams before treatment. Philips advises protecting skin from sunlight during the treatment period, especially during the first 48 hours after treatment. - Complete any required patch test. If your model calls for one, follow its test instructions and wait for the stated observation period before treating a larger area. Philips UK advises a patch test 24 hours before the first treatment and proceeding only if no irritation appears. Seek medical advice if irritation persists. Philips UK IPL guidance.
Why hair-removal instructions differ
Visible hair should be removed before treatment, but the allowed method and timing depend on the device. Braun US recommends shaving 12 to 24 hours beforehand; Philips Lumea guidance allows waxing, shaving or epilation and specifies a 24-hour wait after waxing. Do not infer that every device permits waxing or epilation. Use the method and interval in your own manual.

When to postpone a session
- The treatment area has an open wound, broken skin, inflammation, irritation or unresolved shaving injury.
- You cannot confirm that the area, your current skin tone or your hair colour is suitable under the device’s instructions.
- You have not completed a required patch test or its waiting period.
- The area is tanned or has product residue, or you cannot meet the model’s sun-exposure or skin-preparation directions.
