The Windows command line is a text-based way to interact with Windows by entering commands into a shell. Command Prompt and PowerShell are two different shells; Windows Terminal is an application that can host them. Knowing the distinction makes it easier to understand where commands run and which instructions apply to your session.

What does “Windows command line” mean?

“Command line” describes a text-based way to work with a computer: you type a command, and the system responds. In Windows, the phrase is often used broadly for the experience of entering commands into a command shell. The shell interprets the input and runs or forwards commands, either interactively or from scripts.

Microsoft describes a command shell as an interactive command-line interface, also known as a REPL. The command line is the way you interact; the shell is the program that processes what you enter.

How the command line, shell, tool, and terminal differ

  • Command line: The text-based method of interacting with the computer by entering commands.
  • Shell: The program that accepts and evaluates commands, runs or forwards them, and may provide scripting features.
  • Command-line tool: A program launched from a shell to carry out a task, such as managing files or retrieving information. A command may be built into a shell or provided by a separate program.
  • Terminal: The application that provides a text window in which a shell runs. Microsoft defines it as “an application that provides a text-based window for hosting command shells.”

These components work together, but they are not interchangeable terms. A terminal displays and hosts the interaction; the shell handles the command language; tools perform particular tasks.

Which command shells are used in Windows?

Command Prompt (cmd.exe)

Command Prompt uses the traditional Windows Command shell, whose interpreter is cmd.exe. The cmd command starts a new instance of that interpreter. This shell is associated with commands such as dir and copy, as well as Windows batch files.

PowerShell

PowerShell is a separate shell with its own commands, including cmdlets, and a more extensible scripting language. It can also run Windows commands. Microsoft recommends PowerShell for robust, up-to-date Windows automation.

Although both shells can be used to work with Windows, their command languages and scripting models differ. PowerShell cmdlets do not run in the Command shell, so an instruction written for one shell may not work as written in the other. When following a command example, check which shell it is intended for.

Is Windows Terminal the same as Command Prompt?

No. Windows Terminal is a host application, not a shell. It can host Command Prompt, PowerShell, and other command-line applications, including shells available through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Its tabs and panes let you keep multiple command-line sessions in one window.

Opening Command Prompt inside Windows Terminal still gives you the Command shell. Opening a PowerShell profile gives you PowerShell. The terminal is the window; the selected profile determines which shell is running in it.

What is the Windows command line used for?

A shell lets you run commands and scripts to manage a computer and automate routine tasks. Commands may be built into the shell or supplied by other programs. In PowerShell, for example, input can include language keywords, operating-system executables, and shell-specific cmdlets.

Windows includes commands intended for use at the command line, and Microsoft’s Windows commands reference describes them as tools for automating tasks through scripts or scripting tools. For current Windows automation, Microsoft recommends PowerShell; Command Prompt remains useful for existing batch files and tools that depend on Cmd syntax.

How do you start a command-line session?

  1. Choose a host: Open Command Prompt or PowerShell directly, or open Windows Terminal and select the profile for the shell you want.
  2. Check the shell: Read the window title or prompt and confirm whether the session is Command Prompt or PowerShell, especially before pasting instructions.
  3. Enter a command for that shell: For instance, dir is a familiar Windows command. PowerShell can also be launched from a Command Prompt session by entering PowerShell; the prompt changes to show the PowerShell session.

Microsoft’s Windows commands reference lists applicability across Windows 10, Windows 11, and several Windows Server releases. That scope does not mean every command behaves identically on every release.
