A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with customer teams to turn real-world problems into deployed technical systems. The job can span discovery, technical design, coding, production rollout, and adoption, with lessons from deployments fed back to product and research teams. The exact balance varies by employer and opening: it is neither simply conventional product engineering nor just technical consulting.
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
FDEs work where customer delivery meets software and platform development. They learn how a customer operates, define a technical approach, build or adapt a solution, and help get it running in production. That can also mean identifying recurring needs and turning successful approaches into tools, reusable patterns, or playbooks.

For example, OpenAI’s Seattle Forward Deployed Engineer listing describes the role as leading “complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside our most strategic customers.” Its responsibilities include discovery, technical scoping, system design, implementation, rollout, adoption, and sharing evaluation feedback with research and product teams.
A related San Francisco Forward Deployed Software Engineer listing puts more explicit weight on full-stack custom software: embedding with customers, planning projects, coding alongside customer engineering teams, and converting engagement lessons into reusable abstractions and internal knowledge. These examples illustrate why job descriptions matter more than the title alone.

How is the role different from product engineering or consulting?
An FDE may do work associated with both, but the distinguishing feature is close ownership of the path from a customer’s problem to a working deployment. The role can include hands-on engineering as well as discovery, scoping, and communication with customer teams. It is not necessarily a role that builds only one company’s standard product, and it is not necessarily advisory work that ends with recommendations.
When evaluating a specific opening, check how much of the job involves writing production code and designing systems versus advising, planning, or coordinating delivery. Also look for whether the engineer remains involved through rollout and adoption, and whether the employer expects field insights to influence its internal tools or products.

What skills and experience do FDE jobs ask for?
Across the cited OpenAI postings, the recurring profile combines engineering depth with the ability to work effectively in customer environments:
- Production software engineering: Full-stack implementation across frontend and backend. The Seattle listing names Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks.
- System design and delivery: Discovering requirements, setting scope, choosing an architecture, and planning how to move from prototype to production.
- Customer communication: Understanding needs from engineers and domain experts, explaining trade-offs, and working alongside customer technical teams.
- Practical judgment: Navigating ambiguity and balancing scope, speed, quality, and delivery risk.
- Relevant deployment or domain knowledge: Generative AI and model deployment experience can matter for AI-focused jobs; sector-specific roles may call for experience with particular systems or regulated environments.
Requirements are opening-specific, not universal qualifications for the occupation. OpenAI’s Seattle general listing asks for 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience, including customer-facing work. Its healthcare FDE listing describes a wider range of relevant backgrounds, including software or ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, healthcare infrastructure, and hands-on integration.
Healthcare deployments add domain-specific demands
In healthcare, the work may involve clinical, operational, or member-facing workflows and integrations with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, data platforms, electronic health records, claims systems, and operational tools. The healthcare listing also emphasizes evaluation criteria and the constraints of regulated environments. Those details are specific to that domain; they should not be assumed for every FDE job.
How much does a forward deployed engineer make?
The following are base-pay ranges shown in specific OpenAI job listings observed in 2026. They are employer-posted figures for particular openings, not a market-wide salary estimate or total-compensation comparison.
| Opening | Location or focus | Posted base-pay range | Additional compensation noted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward Deployed Engineer | Seattle | $185,000–$300,000 | Equity and possible performance-related bonuses |
| Forward Deployed Software Engineer | San Francisco | $185,000–$325,000 | Equity |
| Forward Deployed Engineer | Government | $145,800–$280,000 | Equity |
The Seattle listing says pay may vary with market location and job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay is only one component of compensation; compare equity, any bonuses, benefits, location, and seniority separately. The three ranges above do not establish a typical FDE salary across employers or regions.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Engineering ownership: How much production coding, architecture, and implementation does the engineer own?
- Customer engagement: Will you work directly with users and embed with customer engineering teams?
- Deployment lifecycle: Does the role cover discovery through production launch and adoption, or end earlier?
- Domain and systems: Is the work general enterprise deployment, or does it require industry knowledge and integrations such as healthcare systems?
- Working conditions: What location, hybrid expectations, travel, and relocation terms does this specific posting state? The Seattle listing, for example, specifies hybrid work and travel expectations; such terms are job-specific and may change.
- Compensation: Compare base pay with equity, bonuses, benefits, geography, and seniority as distinct factors.
