Windows includes built-in tools to find and remove unwanted files. Start in Settings, review what is taking up space, and approve only items you recognize. The steps below are designed as a quick cleanup, not a timed guarantee: the amount of space you recover depends on your PC.
1. See what is using your storage
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the categories shown, such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Labels can differ by Windows version.
- Choose a category to inspect it before deciding whether to remove anything. Do not treat large personal files or apps as clutter unless you are sure you no longer need them.
Microsoft notes that low disk space can affect device performance and make it difficult to receive system upgrades. Freeing space may help if storage is the issue, but a cleanup is not a guaranteed fix for a slow PC.

2. Review Cleanup recommendations
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations if it is available. Windows may suggest temporary files, large or unused files, rarely used apps, cloud-synced files, or a previous Windows installation. The exact suggestions depend on your device.

- Select only files or apps you have decided you can do without.
- Before removing a personal file, confirm that you have another copy if you want to keep it. Stop if you do not recognize an item or are unsure whether it is backed up.
- Choose the on-screen cleanup or removal control to proceed.
Be cautious with a previous Windows installation
Removing Previous Windows installation(s) can delete the Windows.old files and remove the option to return to your previous Windows version. Microsoft says Windows automatically deletes the previous version ten days after an upgrade; deleting it earlier cannot be undone for the purpose of going back. Leave it alone if you may need that option.

| Storage Sense | Can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents; you can choose how often it runs and what it deletes. | Recurring maintenance after you have reviewed its settings. |
Configure Storage Sense deliberately
- Open Settings > System > Storage, then select Storage Sense. Labels and available controls can vary by Windows version.
- Choose whether and how often it runs, then review the options for temporary files and the Recycle Bin.
- Do not assume it will manage Downloads or cloud content: Microsoft says the default settings do not manage either unless you configure them.
- Check which drive it applies to. Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:.
Microsoft Support describes the feature this way: “Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and items in your Recycle Bin.”
4. Use Disk Cleanup for temporary system files
If you want another built-in option, search Windows for Disk Cleanup, open it, select the drive to clean, and review the listed file types. Confirm removal only after checking what is selected. Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as a way to remove temporary system files.

Return to Settings > System > Storage and check the available space. The amount recovered is specific to your PC; Microsoft does not publish a typical result for this quick cleanup. If large photos, videos, or other personal files are still filling the system drive, moving files you want to keep to external storage is an option, not a requirement.

Microsoft says feature updates typically require 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, while quality updates typically require 2 GB–3 GB or more. These are general figures, not guarantees: actual requirements vary with optional content and the update path. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.
