If a blue screen keeps Windows from starting or interrupts a repair, first record the stop code and any “What failed” module name. Then work from least disruptive to most: check recent hardware or driver changes, enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for startup tools, and run DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC) only if Windows can run. Back up important files before reset or reinstall options, which can remove data.
What a BSOD tells you—and what to note
A stop-code error does not prove that Windows system files are corrupt. Microsoft Support says an unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. Record the exact stop code—such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT—and any module name shown after “What failed.” Treat these as clues to investigate, not a diagnosis by themselves. Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance outlines initial checks.

Try basic checks if Windows still starts
- If the crashes began after adding hardware, shut down, remove that device, and try starting Windows again.
- If repeated restarts prevent normal use, try starting in Safe Mode.
- In Device Manager, look for devices marked with a warning. Try updating the affected driver; if that does not help, consider disabling or uninstalling the device.
- Check available disk space and install Windows updates if Windows runs. Microsoft’s free-space guidance depends on system configuration, so there is no single threshold that applies to every PC.
Get to Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not boot
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) contains tools for startup and recovery problems. After repeated startup failures, Windows may enter WinRE automatically. If it does not, and you have no recovery drive, use installation media made on another working PC to boot the affected computer. At the Windows Setup screen, choose Repair my PC rather than continuing with installation. The key or menu needed to boot from USB varies by computer manufacturer and firmware configuration. See Microsoft’s guide to Windows Recovery Environment.
Choose a recovery option that matches the failure
In WinRE, use the option that fits what changed or what prevents startup. Microsoft describes these recovery tools and scenarios in its Windows recovery options guide.

Startup Repair
Use Startup Repair when Windows cannot start. It is designed to diagnose and address problems that prevent startup; it is not a general guarantee that every blue screen or file-corruption problem will be fixed.
Uninstall Updates or System Restore
If the problem began after an update, consider uninstalling the recent update. If you have a suitable restore point, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state. Availability depends on the PC and the recovery environment.
Reset or reinstall Windows
Reset and reinstall are more disruptive paths. Back up important files first where possible, and read the choices shown on screen: what happens to personal files, apps, and settings depends on the specific option and how setup is started. A clean installation removes data from the selected drive. Do not proceed on the assumption that every reinstall preserves files; Microsoft’s Windows reinstallation guidance describes the distinctions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRepair protected system files when Windows runs
If Windows starts and you suspect missing or corrupted protected system files, Microsoft directs users to run DISM before SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows image and ordinarily obtains the files it needs through Windows Update. If the Windows Update client is not working, Microsoft documents alternate repair sources, including a running Windows installation or a side-by-side Windows folder on network or removable media. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files using a cached copy. These commands target system-file corruption; they do not establish that corruption caused the BSOD, nor do they fix every crash. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use recovery or installation media without losing the USB contents
If you need bootable installation media and have no working recovery drive, Microsoft says you can create installation media on another working PC using a USB drive of at least 8 GB. That capacity is Microsoft’s stated minimum for this media workflow, not a recommendation for a particular brand or model. Follow the current Windows installation-media instructions for the applicable Windows version.
A recovery drive is a separate option created from a working Windows PC. Creating one erases the USB drive, so use an empty drive or back up its contents first. A recovery drive is not a substitute for backing up personal files. Manufacturer recovery media may offer better hardware compatibility because it can include device-specific drivers and factory applications. If Startup Repair or System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, Microsoft lists recovery media or Windows installation media as possible next steps, depending on what you have.
Check Windows version support before planning a reinstall
The recovery steps above apply broadly to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but available options can vary by version, edition, and update. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current lifecycle information and your Windows edition before deciding which version to reinstall.
