Windows pairs Bluetooth accessories through Settings or Quick Settings. Turn on Bluetooth on the PC, put the accessory in pairing mode, then select it in Windows. Once paired, the devices connect automatically when Bluetooth is on and both are in range.
How Windows pairing and connection work
Pairing lets Windows recognize an accessory; it is not usually a step you repeat every time you use it. Microsoft Support says that, with Bluetooth turned on, a paired Bluetooth device and Windows connect automatically whenever they are in range. Microsoft does not specify a fixed distance, and actual range varies by device and surroundings.

The accessory must be on and discoverable for Windows to find it. How to enable pairing mode differs by model, so follow the accessory maker’s instructions. Keyboards, mice, phones, speakers, headphones, printers, and scanners are common examples, but compatibility and supported features depend on the specific accessory and PC.

Pair an accessory in Windows 11
- Turn on Bluetooth on the PC. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, or select the network, sound, or battery icons on the taskbar to open Quick Settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put the accessory in pairing mode and keep it nearby.
- In Quick Settings, open the Bluetooth device-management control and select the accessory under new devices. Alternatively, use the available add-device controls in Bluetooth settings.
- If a supported accessory prompts a Swift Pair notification, select Connect.
Printers and scanners may have a separate add-device path in Windows settings.

Pair an accessory in Windows 10
- Turn on Bluetooth on the PC and make the accessory discoverable.
- Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth, then choose the accessory when it appears.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC continues to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support end information.
Fix a Bluetooth device that will not appear or connect
Work through these checks in order. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.

- Confirm Bluetooth is on in Windows and the accessory is on, discoverable, and nearby. If it does not appear, check the accessory maker’s instructions for pairing mode.
- Move the accessory closer and check its charge. A low battery can stop some devices from entering pairing mode or maintaining a connection.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- If Windows lists the accessory but cannot connect, remove it from Bluetooth settings and add it again.
- Check for Windows updates and restart the PC.
- On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter.
If Bluetooth controls are missing or unavailable
A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control can mean Windows cannot detect or enable the Bluetooth hardware. Potential causes include settings, an outdated or incompatible driver, a stopped service, a hardware fault, or a recent update. Because driver and firmware procedures vary by PC model, consult the computer manufacturer’s support guidance.

If the PC does not have built-in Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add the capability. It is not a general fix for pairing problems, faulty accessories, or driver issues on hardware that already has Bluetooth.

If a Bluetooth headset connects but has no sound
A connected headset can still be silent or sound poor if Windows is sending audio to another device. Open Windows sound settings and select the intended headset as the sound output. If that does not resolve the issue, Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance includes re-pairing, toggling Bluetooth, checking audio format, and updating drivers.

Windows can also connect over Bluetooth to an internet-capable hotspot device through a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (BTPAN). Both devices need Bluetooth, and the phone or other secondary device must support hotspot functionality. This is distinct from pairing a typical accessory such as headphones or a keyboard.
