In a 2014 proof of concept, enzymes attached to patterned gold surfaces produced flow when supplied with their matching substrates. The work demonstrated a research approach, not a ready-to-buy pump or a clinical device.
How can an enzyme move liquid?
An enzyme catalyzes a chemical reaction. In the 2014 enzyme-micropump work, researchers tethered enzymes to patterned gold surfaces and supplied the matching substrate. The resulting catalytic activity generated directed fluid motion at small scales. The report describes examples using catalase, glucose oxidase, lipase and urease.

The mechanism does not require a biological motor powered by ATP, nor a conventional externally driven mechanical pump. Instead, the chemical reaction at the enzyme-functionalized surface is the driving process. This is a way to couple local chemistry to fluid movement—not a claim that enzymes simply push liquid without an energy source.
What does “fuel-free” mean in this context?
“Fuel-free” is relative: the system does not rely on ATP as a motor fuel or on a conventional mechanical pump, but it does need an appropriate chemical substrate. The 2014 report says pumping velocity increased as the target-substrate concentration increased; it does not provide a single quantitative rate or percentage that applies generally.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because the reaction depends on substrate, the pump should not be described as running indefinitely. The available reports do not establish standardized operating lifetimes, efficiencies or throughput figures. Those measures would be needed to judge how an enzyme micropump compares with other pump designs in a particular application.
What controls the flow, and what has been demonstrated?
Substrate identity and concentration
The enzyme and its matching substrate determine whether the catalytic process can drive flow. Substrate concentration also matters: the 2014 report describes higher pumping velocity at higher target-substrate concentrations. This makes the chemistry a possible control input, but it does not establish a universal response curve or a numerical performance specification.

Enzyme-responsive release
The 2014 report also describes a proof-of-concept hydrogel microdevice that released insulin in response to glucose. It is an experimental demonstration, not evidence of an available therapy or an approved clinical product. The report discusses environmentally responsive drug delivery and toxin detection or neutralization as possible development directions, not as deployed products.

A 2024 study extended enzyme-driven effects to polymer sheets moving at the air–water interface. Its reported research-stage result involved asymmetric enzyme coatings and substrate-triggered buoyancy flows that produced linear and rotational trajectories. A separate 2024 study of enzymatic nanomotor swarms describes collective behavior in fuel-rich conditions and highlights buoyancy-driven convection. These findings provide context for how catalytic activity can couple to larger fluid motion; they do not establish a practical pump product.

How is this different from a light-actuated micropump?
A 2026 study describes a distinct pumping approach using azobenzene-doped liquid-crystal films. Light changes the molecules’ state, deforming the soft material and producing reversible oscillatory flows. The work reports flow in microfluidic channels, modulation of enzyme kinetics under confinement and movement of a macroscopic floater at an air–water interface. It is relevant to fuel-free fluid pumping, but the pump mechanism is photoactuation—not enzyme catalysis.
| Approach | Energy input | Control signal | Reported flow or motion | Material architecture | Demonstrated scale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enzyme micropump (2014) | Chemical substrate for the enzyme reaction | Substrate identity and concentration | Directed flow; velocity increased with target-substrate concentration | Enzymes tethered to patterned gold surfaces | Small-scale pumping; the report also describes a glucose-responsive hydrogel microdevice |
| Light-actuated micropump (2026) | Incident light | Light-induced molecular changes | Reversible oscillatory flows | Azobenzene-doped liquid-crystal film | Microfluidic channels and a macroscopic floater at an air–water interface |
The studies do not provide a standardized quantitative comparison of throughput, efficiency, operating lifetime, biocompatibility or clinical readiness, so they cannot support a ranking on those measures. The 2026 Wiley article says its data are available on request from the corresponding author and are not publicly available because of privacy or ethical restrictions.

What the 2014 report claims—and what it does not prove
The 2014 work is identified as S. Sengupta et al., “Self-powered Enzyme Micropumps,” Nature Chemistry 6 (2014), 415–422, DOI 10.1038/nchem.1895. The experimental details summarized here are reported in contemporaneous coverage and identified bibliographically in the later Wiley article; they should not be mistaken for a standardized product specification.
That contemporaneous report attributes this description to Ayusman Sen, who led the research at Pennsylvania State University: “The non-mechanical, self-powered nano/micro-scale pumps precisely control flow rate and turn on in response to specific stimuli,”. The same report attributes to Sen the observation, “One need not be tied to this one specific reaction,” and the statement that “our results open up a new area of mechanobiology: intrinsic force generation by non ATP-dependent enzymes and their role in fluid transport in and outside biological systems.” These are statements attributed by the report, not independently verified interview quotations.
