These actions are not interchangeable. On Windows 11 and macOS, remove an input you no longer use; if you need to keep multiple inputs, adjust the relevant shortcut settings instead.
First decide what you want to turn off
- Remove an input: Delete an unused keyboard layout on Windows or input source on Mac. It will no longer be available for typing or switching.
- Stop shortcut switching: Keep your inputs and inspect the keyboard-shortcut settings. The documented controls differ by platform, and Windows’ official instructions do not establish a complete current method for disabling every switching shortcut while retaining all layouts.
- Hide the indicator: Change whether the language or input indicator appears in the taskbar or menu bar. Hiding it does not remove an input or, by itself, stop keyboard shortcuts from switching.
If you are not sure which input is active, check the taskbar indicator on Windows or the Input menu on Mac before removing anything.

Remove a keyboard layout in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the language entry associated with the unwanted layout and open its Language options.
- Under Keyboards, open the menu next to the layout and choose Remove.
The language entry and layout name may not appear to match. Microsoft notes that a layout can be associated with a language entry that is not obvious, so check other language entries if you do not find it right away. See Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard layout instructions.
If Remove is unavailable because the layout is the only one for your current Windows display language, add another layout first. Removing a keyboard layout is not the same as removing its language pack. The current display language cannot be removed until you change the display language.

Stop a Windows shortcut from switching layouts
Microsoft documents Windows key + Spacebar for switching the input language and keyboard layout. It also lists Ctrl + Shift as a shortcut for switching keyboard layouts when multiple layouts are available. The shortcuts are useful when you want to switch; they can be disruptive if triggered accidentally. Microsoft’s list is at Keyboard shortcuts in Windows.
If you want to retain multiple layouts, open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings and inspect the Input language hot keys link if it appears. The official Windows guidance does not provide one complete, current procedure for disabling every input-switching shortcut while keeping all layouts, so available controls may not cover every shortcut on your system. Do not assume that hiding the taskbar indicator disables switching, and avoid treating an unofficial registry change as a universal supported fix. If you do not need multiple layouts, removing the unused ones is the clearest documented option.

Remove an input source on Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- In Text Input, select Edit.
- Select the input source you no longer use and choose Remove.
Apple says the Input menu appears automatically when more than one input source is added. Removing a source means it is no longer available for switching. Apple’s instructions are in Change Input Sources settings on Mac.

Mac can switch input sources through the menu bar’s Input menu or keyboard shortcuts. Apple documents Control-Space bar to select the last-used source and Control-Option-Space bar to select the next one. Some Macs can also use the Fn or Globe key to change input source, or use Caps Lock to switch between Latin and non-Latin sources where available. See Write in another language on Mac.

If a key press is causing unwanted changes, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts and inspect the input-source controls. To change what Fn or Globe does, check the Keyboard settings for its key assignment. Shortcut names and available options can vary by macOS release and configuration; consult Apple’s Mac keyboard settings guide for the controls available on your system.
Hide the language indicator without deleting inputs
On Windows, the taskbar input indicator helps you select layouts. Microsoft describes it alongside the legacy desktop language bar as an indicator-display choice; changing which one appears does not remove a layout. On Mac, the Input menu is associated with having more than one input source. If you need the inputs, change display or shortcut behavior rather than deleting them. Indicator visibility and shortcut switching are separate settings.
