Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWindows Admin Center has four deployment patterns: install it on a Windows 11 PC, on a gateway server, on a server you manage, or in a failover cluster. The important caveat is that Microsoft does not recommend using it to manage locally the same server where it is installed. To manage that server, connect to it remotely from a management PC or another server.
Choose an installation pattern
The right deployment depends on how many administrators need access, where their browser sessions can reach, and whether the service needs high availability. These are deployment patterns—not four different products.

| Pattern | Where Windows Admin Center is installed | Best fit | Access and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local client | A Windows 11 PC | Quick start, testing, ad hoc administration, or a small environment | Launch it from the Start menu and open https://localhost:6516 in a browser on that PC. |
| Gateway server | A designated Windows Server | A larger environment that benefits from a shared entry point | Administrators reach the gateway in a browser if they have network access to it. Gateway access does not itself grant rights on target servers. |
| Managed server | Directly on a server you manage | Remote management of that server or a cluster that includes it | Do not treat installation on a server as a recommendation to manage that same host locally; use a remote connection. |
| Failover cluster | As a gateway service in a failover cluster | Production environments that require high availability | Microsoft describes an active-passive arrangement. Check support for the Windows Admin Center version you plan to run. |
Microsoft’s installation-options guidance says, “We don’t recommend using Windows Admin Center for local management of the same server on which it’s installed.” It recommends connecting to the server remotely from a management PC or another server. This is a recommendation about local management of the installation host, not a blanket prohibition on installing Windows Admin Center on a server.

Check high-availability support by version
The same Microsoft page warns that Windows Admin Center version 2410 does not support high availability and that users of high availability cannot update to that version. This is version-specific guidance, not a guarantee about later releases: verify the current support notice before deploying or updating a clustered gateway.

Confirm operating-system and browser compatibility
Microsoft’s installation-options matrix lists Windows 11 and Windows 11 ARM64 for local-client installation. For gateway-server, managed-server, and failover-cluster installations, it lists Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025. Installation on a domain controller is unsupported.
The documented management targets include Windows 11 through Computer Management; Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025; and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016. Windows Server 2016 cluster management requires the latest cumulative update. Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 do not include required PowerShell features by default; Microsoft says to install Windows Management Framework 5.1 or later to manage those systems.

Microsoft lists Edge and Google Chrome as tested browsers on Windows 10 and 11. Other browsers, including Firefox, are not officially supported in that documented test matrix.

Express and Custom describe installer configuration, not deployment location. You still choose a local client, gateway server, managed server, or failover cluster as the deployment pattern.
Rank #3
| Installer mode | What it configures | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Express | Selects network-access and port settings based on the operating system; does not offer configuration of extra features. | When the defaults fit and you do not need to adjust the additional settings. |
| Custom | Lets you configure network access, ports, TLS certificate type and thumbprint, endpoint FQDN, trusted-hosts mode, and WinRM over HTTPS. | When the deployment requires specific access, certificate, endpoint, or WinRM settings. |
The installation guide covers Windows Server Desktop Experience and Server Core, as well as PowerShell and silent installation. Installing requires administrator privileges on the installation machine. If you provide a TLS certificate, it must be a server-authentication certificate in LocalMachineMy. For testing, the installer can generate a self-signed certificate valid for 60 days; Microsoft advises using a certificate from a trusted certificate authority in production.
Separate gateway access from target-server permissions
A shared gateway makes Windows Admin Center reachable; it does not automatically authorize users to administer the machines behind it. Users need credentials with administrative privileges on each target. By default, Windows Admin Center users require full local administrator privileges on the machines they manage.

Microsoft documents role-based access control using configured Just Enough Administration (JEA) endpoints. The listed roles are Administrators, Readers, and Hyper-V Administrators; Microsoft says custom roles cannot be created. Limited-access roles also remove features: Files cannot upload or download, PowerShell and Remote Desktop are unavailable, and Storage Replica is unavailable.

For gateway identity, the documented options include Active Directory or local-machine groups and Microsoft Entra ID. Entra authentication can add conditional-access and multifactor-authentication features, but it does not replace the separate access requirements for the gateway and target machines. See Microsoft’s user access options and access-control configuration guidance.
Quick Recap
Make the deployment choice
- Choose a local client for a single administrator’s quick start, testing, or ad hoc work when the PC can reach the systems being managed.
- Choose a gateway server when multiple administrators need a shared browser-accessible entry point and can reach the gateway over the network.
- Choose a managed-server installation when installing on a target or cluster member suits the setup, while managing it remotely rather than locally on the installation host.
- Choose a failover-cluster deployment when gateway high availability is required, after confirming that the Windows Admin Center version supports it.
