In practical terms, that often means you can ask to “show me” something you worked on earlier—like a specific setting screen, a document you viewed, a spreadsheet you edited, or a message you read—depending on what’s available on your device and configuration.
Recall is not a general replacement for:
- Windows Search (files, apps, and indexed content)
- Microsoft Copilot chat (conversational help based on your prompts)
- Browser history (tabs and websites)
- Passwords or credential managers (it doesn’t secure accounts)
Think of Recall as a screen-aware retrieval layer. If you’re the type who bounces between apps, settings pages, and documents, it can feel like a personal “what did I see?” memory.
Copilot+ PC requirements: the hardware and OS checklist
Recall is targeted at Copilot+ PCs, which generally means devices built for Windows’ AI workload and equipped with the right platform capabilities—most importantly, an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) and modern Windows 11 builds.
Before troubleshooting, confirm your basics:
- Device class: Copilot+ PC (for example, Snapdragon X-series systems such as Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus, depending on your model)
- Windows version: A current Windows 11 release that supports Copilot+ features (commonly the “next” feature updates in 2024/2025 eras)
- Account type: A signed-in Microsoft account or supported Windows profile (availability may differ across editions)
- Region and language: Feature rollouts can be gated by market
If Recall isn’t available, you’ll typically see it missing from the relevant settings pages. In some cases, it’s also tied to device readiness checks performed after setup or major updates.
How Recall works in practice
Recall is designed to remember what’s on your screen and make it retrievable via search. While Microsoft’s implementation details can evolve, the operating model for users is usually:
- Capture: The system records screen activity subject to its rules and your configuration.
- Index: AI and indexing logic convert what’s captured into searchable signals.
- Retrieve: When you search, Recall surfaces relevant moments or content.
That means Recall usefulness depends on how often you use your PC and how you navigate apps. If you spend lots of time in the same document and frequently switch contexts, Recall tends to provide the most value.
Also, Recall can’t magically interpret everything perfectly. Small UI changes, unusual display scaling, or overlays can reduce search accuracy, especially on early builds.
Privacy and security: what to review before you turn it on
Recall’s value is tied to what it captures. So you should review the feature’s privacy controls before leaving it enabled continuously.
Here’s what to check:
- Visibility and retention controls: Look for options that affect whether history is stored, how long it’s kept, or whether it’s paused.
- Exclusions: Many screen capture systems allow you to exclude sensitive apps or regions. Use those controls for privacy.
- Encryption and protection: On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft typically ties AI features to platform security. Still, confirm device settings like BitLocker are enabled if your organization requires it.
- Sharing: Ensure you understand whether any part of Recall data can be accessed by account services or only on-device.
For day-one safety, start by enabling Recall for a limited time window (if your build offers that), then verify that it correctly searches benign apps before you include everything.
Enable or disable Recall on your Copilot+ PC
Recall settings are typically found in the Windows settings privacy area or a dedicated Recall panel. The exact wording may vary by Windows build, but the flow is consistent: find the Recall toggle, choose exclusions, and confirm your capture/search behavior.

Check whether Recall is available on your device
Start with the simplest check: look for Recall inside Settings. Then verify your Windows build is recent enough.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security (or a similar privacy section).
- Search for Recall using the Settings search box.
- If it appears, open it; if it doesn’t, update Windows and re-check.
If Recall still doesn’t appear, it’s usually one of: device not in Copilot+ class, Windows feature update not installed, regional rollout not enabled, or missing required platform features.
Turn Recall on (when you want it)
When you enable Recall, Windows will often ask for confirmation and may present a short privacy statement.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security.
- Find Recall (use the search field in Settings).
- Turn on the Recall toggle.
- Confirm any prompts about capture, indexing, or permissions.
- Set exclusions (for example, sensitive apps you use for work or banking).
After enabling, allow the system time to build an initial index. You may not get perfect results immediately, especially if Recall is new on your machine.
Turn Recall off (when you don’t)
Disabling Recall is usually a single toggle, but it may also require clearing or pausing existing history depending on the build.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security.
- Open Recall.
- Turn off the Recall toggle.
- If offered, choose an option to stop capture and/or delete existing history.
If you turn it off and later turn it back on, you may start a new indexing cycle. Keep that in mind if you’re testing search results.
Adjust data controls and permissions
Even with Recall enabled, you should tune it so it doesn’t capture more than you want.
- In Recall settings, look for Exclusions or Do not capture lists.
- Add apps that show sensitive information (finance apps, email clients, internal dashboards).
- Check whether there’s a pause or background activity option and set it based on your habits.
- Verify how you search Recall and what kinds of results it returns (text, UI states, or references).
If the UI shows multiple capture modes, prefer the one that limits retention and scope over the one that captures broadly.
Common issues and troubleshooting
Recall is a new feature path on many devices, so early problems are common. Use this section as a checklist—start with availability, then permissions, then indexing.

- If your organization manages devices, verify policies aren’t blocking Recall.
If it’s still missing, note your Windows 11 version (Settings → System → About) and your region. Rollouts can lag by months.
Recall is enabled but search doesn’t return results
When Recall is on but retrieval fails, the usual culprit is indexing lag, exclusions, or search wording.
- Wait for indexing to complete. After enabling, run a few minutes of normal activity, then try a simple search.
- Try a search query that maps to a visible UI element (for example, the exact name of a settings page or document title).
- Check exclusions: confirm the app you’re searching isn’t excluded in Recall settings.
- Verify you’re signed into the expected Windows profile.
- Restart Windows Search/Recall experiences by rebooting, then retry.
If results never appear, test with one app you use constantly (like a text editor) to isolate whether the issue is app-specific.
Battery, performance, or heat concerns
Any continuous capture/indexing feature can impact thermals, especially on fanless or tightly constrained laptops.
- Check whether Recall has a pause or “capture only while active” option.
- Reduce exclusions to sensitive apps only, but consider excluding lightweight overlays or games if Recall struggles.
- Keep your Windows power plan to a sensible default and avoid running heavy workloads while you’re testing.
- Update to the latest Windows build; performance regressions are frequently patched.
If your device feels hot, verify that it isn’t simultaneously running other AI processes. Recall itself may be only one part of the workload.
Windows updates break or reset settings
Major updates can reset experimental feature behavior. If Recall stops working after an update:
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Recall and confirm the toggle state.
- Re-check exclusions and any “delete history” options.
- Restart the PC after updates fully complete.
- If it’s an enterprise device, re-validate policies that may have been re-applied.
Document your Recall settings before big upgrades so you can restore them quickly.

Recall vs. other Windows search and timeline features
Recall is easiest to understand by contrast. Windows already has indexing, recent files, and activity-style experiences. Recall focuses specifically on screen-based retrieval.
| Feature | What it finds | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Search | Files, apps, indexed text and metadata | Finding documents and system content quickly |
| Browser history/bookmarks | Websites and page visits | Returning to specific web resources |
| Task view / recent apps | What you were using | Jumping back into apps |
| Recall | What you saw on screen (via AI indexing) | Reconstructing an action, setting, or UI moment |
If you remember where you saw something but not the file name, Recall can be the missing piece. If you remember the file name, Windows Search may be faster.
Alternatives if you prefer not to use Recall
If you decide Recall is too intrusive—or you work on sensitive data—you still have options to reduce the “where was that?” problem.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRegulated or enterprise environments: what to consider
For work devices—especially in healthcare, finance, legal, or other regulated contexts—the question isn’t just whether Recall works. It’s whether your organization permits it and how it affects compliance.
Before enabling Recall on a managed device, check:
- Device encryption status (for example, BitLocker on corporate laptops)
- Policy restrictions that can disable or limit AI capture features
- Data handling expectations for screen content, especially for emails, dashboards, and internal docs
- Audit requirements—some organizations need explicit logging for AI-related behaviors
If you have an IT administrator, ask whether Recall is allowed under your device policy and what settings are recommended for exclusions.
Common Questions
Is Recall available on every Windows 11 PC?
No. Recall is designed for Copilot+ PCs and requires the right platform capabilities and supported Windows builds. On older hardware, you won’t see it in Settings.
Can I exclude sensitive apps from Recall?
Most rollout builds provide some form of exclusions or capture scope controls. Check the Recall settings page for an Exclusions, Do not capture, or similar list and add sensitive apps.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will Recall capture passwords or private messages?
It’s possible for sensitive content to appear on screen, which is why exclusions and pausing matter. If you handle credentials in plain text fields, configure exclusions and consider turning Recall off during high-risk workflows.
Does disabling Recall delete already captured history?
That depends on the build and the options shown in your Recall settings. Some versions offer a separate action to delete existing history; turning it off may stop new capture without removing old data.
Why does Recall sometimes return irrelevant results?
Common reasons include indexing lag, search queries that don’t match the UI text, excluded apps, or display scaling/overlays that affect what gets indexed.
Bottom Line
Windows Recall on Copilot+ PCs is a productivity feature aimed at one problem: remembering what you saw on your screen. If it matches your workflow—lots of app switching, settings changes, and document review—it can save time quickly.
