Why Fall Guys May Not Work on Nintendo Switch
Fall Guys relies on the Nintendo Switch network stack, the game’s installed content, and server-side authentication for online modes. When one of those breaks, symptoms often look like “the game won’t load” or “online doesn’t work.”

- Server or matchmaking issues: The game can launch but won’t connect or will time out.
- Outdated versions: A mismatch between Fall Guys and Switch system software can cause crashes or failed updates.
- Corrupted game files: After an interrupted download/update, the game may hang or crash.
- Network settings: NAT type, DNS, captive portals, and router restrictions can block required connections.
- Storage and data integrity: Low space or partially downloaded content can break startup.
Pre-Flight Checklist (Do These First)
Before changing anything complicated, confirm the basics. These checks resolve a surprising number of cases.
- Confirm your Switch is online: Open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
- Check other games/apps: If YouTube or another online title fails too, the issue is likely your network, not Fall Guys.
- Power-cycle your home network: Unplug your router/modem for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait for it to fully reconnect, then retry Fall Guys.
- Restart the Switch: Hold Power on the Switch, choose Power Options > Restart.
- Verify there’s no background download stuck: Go to Home Menu > Nintendo eShop and check for ongoing downloads/updates.
Fixes You Can Try Immediately
If Fall Guys fails to launch or freezes, these quick actions often clear transient states.
Force-close the game and relaunch
Press X on the game preview from the Home Menu (or use the app menu) and choose Close, then reopen Fall Guys.
Hard power cycle the console (when it hangs)
If the system becomes unresponsive or the game freezes repeatedly:
- Hold Power until the screen turns off (about 10–15 seconds).
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Press Power again to boot normally.
- Start Fall Guys and test the same mode that was failing.
Check for Updates and Version Mismatches
On Switch, a common failure mode is “the game needs an update” or “your system needs an update.”
Update Fall Guys
- From the Home Menu, highlight Fall Guys.
- Press + (Options) and select Software Update.
- Apply any pending updates.
If you’re on microSD storage, make sure the console detects the card reliably (see storage section).
Update Nintendo Switch system software
- Open System Settings.
- Select System > System Update.
- Install any available updates, then reboot the Switch.
After updating, reopen Fall Guys and test again.
Verify Storage, Downloads, and Corrupted Data
Low storage or a partially downloaded update can cause startup crashes, long loading, or broken online login.
Check available storage
- Go to System Settings > Data Management.
- Check free space on your internal storage and microSD card.
Aim to keep at least a few gigabytes free so the game and updates can complete cleanly. If space is tight, free storage and retry.

Move Fall Guys between internal storage and microSD (if you can)
If you suspect the install location is the issue, try moving it:
- Open System Settings > Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Select Fall Guys and choose Move to the other storage type.
After moving, launch Fall Guys again.
Re-download missing/corrupt data by reinstalling (safer than guessing)
If the game repeatedly crashes or won’t get past a specific screen, skip to the clean reinstall section. It’s more deterministic than random toggles.
Rebuild the Connection: Network Troubleshooting
Even if the Switch shows “Connected” in settings, Fall Guys may still fail if the network blocks the specific traffic it needs.

Switch between Wi-Fi and wired (if possible)
If you have a dock, you can use Ethernet via a USB-to-Ethernet adapter or dock Ethernet (depending on your setup). Wired connections reduce jitter and packet loss.
Try a different DNS (manual)
- Go to System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
- Select your current Wi-Fi network.
- Choose Change Settings.
- Set DNS Settings to Manual.
- Enter DNS servers (common choices are 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8).
- Save and run Test Connection.
If Fall Guys suddenly connects afterward, the original DNS routing was the likely culprit.
Confirm NAT type and router restrictions
Nintendo’s online experience is sensitive to router configuration. If your NAT type is strict, matchmaking may fail.
- On the Switch, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
- Open your network details and run Test Connection.
If you see a strict NAT indicator (wording varies by firmware), check your router for UPnP settings. Enable UPnP if your network supports it, then retest.

Check Account, eShop Access, and Subscription Limits
Some “it won’t connect” issues come from account authentication or online access requirements.
Confirm Nintendo Account can access online services
- Open Nintendo eShop.
- Sign in with the correct user if prompted.
- Try any small free action (like checking your account details) to confirm authentication works.
If you’re trying to play online, verify Nintendo Switch Online
Online multiplayer on Switch requires the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online subscription for your region. If your subscription is expired or not active, online modes in Fall Guys may fail even though the game launches.
Clean Reinstall (When Everything Else Fails)
If Fall Guys still won’t work after updates and network checks, a clean reinstall eliminates corrupted files and broken dependencies.

Fall Guys progression is typically tied to your account. Still, avoid reinstalling during suspicious login issues. If you’re unsure, confirm you can sign in on the title.
Uninstall and reinstall
- From the Home Menu, highlight Fall Guys.
- Press + and choose Manage Software.
- Select Delete Software.
- Reboot the Switch.
- Open Nintendo eShop or your library and reinstall Fall Guys.
After reinstalling, try a basic mode first. If loading works but online matchmaking fails, your issue is likely network rather than the install.
Common Symptoms and What to Try
Use this as a fast triage. Match your symptom to the most likely causes.
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | What to Try |
|---|---|---|
| Game won’t launch (black screen or immediate crash) | Outdated system/game files or corrupted install | Update Switch + Fall Guys, then do a clean reinstall |
| Stuck on loading screen | Network timeouts or corrupted content | Test connection, change DNS, then reinstall if it persists |
| Can’t connect to servers / long “connecting” | Server-side issue or NAT/router restrictions | Power-cycle router, try hotspot, enable UPnP, retest |
| Online modes fail but offline works | Nintendo Switch Online subscription or authentication | Verify subscription status and eShop login |
| Update repeatedly fails | Insufficient storage or corrupted download | Free space, delete software, reinstall, retest |
| Only fails on one Wi-Fi network | Router rules or captive portal | Try mobile hotspot or alternate DNS |
Alternatives: Play From Another Network or Device
If you need immediate access while you troubleshoot, use controlled tests to confirm where the fault is.
Try a mobile hotspot
Use your phone hotspot to connect the Switch. If Fall Guys works there, your home network/router configuration is the problem.

Try another Nintendo Switch on the same network
If another Switch can run Fall Guys, your console likely has corrupted software data or a settings mismatch. If both fail, focus on the network and server-side issues.
FAQ
Fall Guys launches, but online matchmaking never finishes. What should I do?
First run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Then power-cycle your router and try again. If it still fails, change DNS to manual (for example, 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8) and test. If only your home network fails, mobile hotspot usually confirms the router/NAT issue.
Do I need to delete saved data when reinstalling Fall Guys?
On Nintendo Switch, reinstalling the game typically doesn’t erase your account-linked progression, but it can remove local settings tied to the software install. If you want the safest route, confirm you can log into your account when the game launches after reinstalling.
Will using a microSD card cause Fall Guys issues?
It can if the card is unstable or near-full. Check that the card is detected consistently in Data Management. If problems persist, move the software to internal storage (or back) and test.
How can I tell if it’s a server problem?
Server problems usually affect multiple players and look like connection timeouts or repeated matchmaking failures. If Fall Guys connects on a mobile hotspot but not on your home network, it’s probably not a server-wide issue.
What’s the quickest “works most of the time” fix?
Restart the Switch, update Fall Guys and system software, then power-cycle your router and run connection tests. If the crash/loading issue remains, do a clean reinstall.
Bottom Line
When Fall Guys isn’t working on Nintendo Switch, start with updates and connection testing, then move to targeted network changes and a clean reinstall if needed. The fastest way to avoid endless trial-and-error is to isolate whether the issue is the console, the install data, or the network.
If you want, tell me what exactly happens on your Switch (error message text, where it freezes, and whether it works on a hotspot), and I can point you to the most likely fix.
