If your older PC passes Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility check, Windows 11 is the supported choice. If it does not, Windows 10 still runs, but its general support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs can receive limited security updates through October 13, 2026, under Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. If you need supported Windows beyond that date and your PC cannot run Windows 11, consider replacing the computer.
How Windows 11 and Windows 10 compare on an older PC
| Question | Windows 11 | Windows 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Is the operating system generally supported? | Yes, if the PC meets the requirements for Windows 11. Microsoft’s compatibility check can assess the device. | No. General support ended October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer ESU enrollment provides limited security updates through October 13, 2026. |
| Can this older PC run it? | Only if it meets Microsoft’s requirements, including a supported processor, TPM 2.0, and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Minimum requirements do not guarantee good performance for a particular workload. | Windows 10 PCs continue to function after support ends. Continued operation does not mean they receive regular security updates. |
| What is the main trade-off? | It is the supported Windows path when the exact PC is eligible, but compatibility and performance depend on the device and its workload. | It can serve as a temporary bridge for eligible users, but it no longer has general support and consumer ESU is time-limited. |
Microsoft’s published requirements and lifecycle guidance do not establish that Windows 11 is categorically faster or slower than Windows 10 on older hardware. A reliable performance answer depends on the exact computer and how you use it.

Check whether your exact PC qualifies for Windows 11
Do not decide based only on the computer’s age, RAM, or free storage. Microsoft requires a compatible processor from its supported list, as well as several other hardware and firmware capabilities. Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements and compatibility guidance to check the complete list.
Microsoft’s minimum requirements
Microsoft lists the following minimums for Windows 11:
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- A compatible 64-bit processor with at least 1 GHz and two cores, and on Microsoft’s supported-processor list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A qualifying HD display larger than 9 inches diagonally.
Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Meeting these minimum specifications does not guarantee that the PC will feel suitable for your applications or workload.
Use PC Health Check or Windows Update
Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or look for the eligibility result in Windows Update. If Windows Update offers the upgrade, Microsoft says the Windows 10 device must be running version 2004 or later for that upgrade route. Use the result for your own PC rather than assuming that another computer of a similar age has the same compatibility.
If the PC fails, do not assume that adding RAM or buying a generic TPM module will make it eligible. The processor must also be supported, and whether components can be changed depends on the computer’s design. Microsoft recommends checking with the PC manufacturer or a hardware expert about upgrade options.

What Windows 10 support ending means
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 computers continue to work, but without applicable coverage they no longer receive regular operating-system security updates, quality fixes, feature updates, or technical support. Microsoft cautions that antivirus software by itself does not replace operating-system security updates. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support and lifecycle information.
Consumer Extended Security Updates are a limited bridge
Microsoft’s consumer ESU program is available in most markets to eligible personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2. It excludes devices managed by an organization or enrolled in enterprise licensing programs. Eligible enrolled devices receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026, regardless of when they enroll.
Microsoft lists enrollment routes that include synchronizing settings at no additional cost, using Microsoft Rewards points, or making a one-time US$30 payment plus applicable tax. Availability and terms can vary by region, so check the offer shown on your PC. ESU extends limited security updates; it does not restore general technical assistance or provide new feature updates.

Choose the next step for your situation
Your PC is eligible and your essential apps work
Upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update when the upgrade is offered. Confirm that the applications, peripherals, and work tasks you depend on function as needed; compatibility can vary by model and workload.

Your PC is ineligible, but you qualify for consumer ESU
Use ESU only as a short transition while you decide how to move to a supported Windows setup. Its security-update coverage ends October 13, 2026, and does not restore Windows 10’s general support.
Your PC is ineligible and you need supported Windows after ESU ends
Consider replacing the computer with one that supports Windows 11. Whether repair or replacement makes more sense depends on your model, the cost of any feasible work, your needs, and local prices; the published requirements alone cannot settle that value judgment.
You are considering a hardware upgrade or workaround
First establish exactly why the PC failed the compatibility check. A repair or component change may be possible on some models, but no generic RAM or TPM purchase guarantees eligibility, and an unsupported processor remains a barrier. Get model-specific advice from the manufacturer or a hardware expert before spending money.
