Windows 11 vs. Windows 10 Taskbar: What You Still Lose in 2026

Windows 11 is bringing back taskbar placement on all four screen edges, but some alternate-position behaviors remain limited and Windows 10 still has documented drag-to-resize controls.

In 2026, Windows 11 is restoring several taskbar features people associate with Windows 10: Microsoft says taskbar positioning on any screen edge and labeled, ungrouped buttons are rolling out. But the rollout is staged, and some behaviors remain limited when the taskbar is moved to the top or sides. Windows 10 still has documented free resizing by dragging the taskbar border; Windows 11’s announced alternative is a smaller-taskbar option.

What has returned to the Windows 11 taskbar?

Microsoft announced taskbar changes on May 15, 2026, and said on September 21 that Start and taskbar improvements had begun rolling out broadly. The position setting allows the bar at the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen. Because rollout is staged, it may not yet appear on every Windows 11 PC.

To check, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and look for the taskbar position setting. If it is missing, check Windows Update and your installed build; Microsoft has not published a universal eligibility list or a build guarantee. Microsoft’s May 15 announcement initially described availability in the Windows Insider Experimental channel; its September 21 update said broader rollout had started.

Which Windows 10 taskbar behaviors are still different?

Workflow Windows 10 Windows 11 in 2026
Position Microsoft documents placement on the left, top, right, or bottom edge. All four positions are part of the 2026 rollout; availability is staged.
Window buttons and labels Separate buttons with labels are available, including a Never combine option. Microsoft says Never combine and labels work in vertical taskbar layouts; this is not a feature missing across the board.
Resize Unlock the taskbar and drag its border to change its size. A smaller taskbar option reduces its height and uses smaller icons. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not establish free border-drag resizing.
Auto-hide and tablet use at another edge Microsoft documents auto-hide and tablet-mode behavior. Microsoft’s May announcement said auto-hide and tablet-optimized taskbar support were not yet available in alternate positions.
Search at another edge The taskbar supports its documented search interface. Microsoft said alternate positions used a search icon rather than a full search box.
Per-monitor position and drag-and-drop These workflows are supported by Windows 10 taskbar behavior. Microsoft said it was evaluating per-monitor positioning and drag-and-drop; neither was a committed release feature.

Windows 10 placement and resizing instructions are in Microsoft’s Windows 10 taskbar guidance. For Windows 11’s announced options and their state at announcement time, see Microsoft’s feature post.

What remains limited when the taskbar is moved?

The important distinction is position-dependent behavior. Microsoft’s May 2026 announcement identified auto-hide, tablet optimization, touch gestures, and full search boxes as incomplete or unsupported for alternate taskbar positions at that time. Do not read that as saying Windows 11 lacks auto-hide or search in every layout. The announcement describes the alternate-edge layouts specifically, and later rollout changes may affect details.

Microsoft also said it was evaluating “different taskbar positions per monitor and drag and drop.” Evaluation is not a promise of delivery or a release date. People who rely on positioning the taskbar independently on multiple displays or dragging files onto taskbar app buttons should treat those capabilities as unsettled in Windows 11, rather than assume the 2026 rollout includes them.

Is Windows 10 still the better choice for taskbar control?

For free, direct resizing by dragging the bar’s border, Windows 10 has clearer documented support. Windows 11’s smaller-taskbar option addresses screen space differently, but it is not the same control. For taskbar placement, the gap has narrowed: all four edges are part of the Windows 11 rollout, though not necessarily available on an individual PC yet.

Taskbar familiarity is only one part of the decision. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025: free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after that date. A Windows 10 PC can continue to work, but continued operation is not continued support. See Microsoft’s taskbar and support guidance for the lifecycle notice.
