Use Voice Typing when you want to dictate text into the box you’re already using. Choose Voice Access when you want to dictate and control Windows or apps with spoken commands. The key difference is scope: one is focused on text entry; the other combines dictation with hands-free navigation and interaction.
What’s the difference between Voice Typing and Voice Access?
Microsoft describes Voice Typing as a dictation feature for authoring text. Voice Access adds commands, so you can both dictate and interact with Windows and apps by voice. It can be used to open or switch apps, browse, and work with email, as well as enter and edit text. Microsoft’s Voice Access FAQ explains the distinction.

How do you turn on Voice Typing in Windows 11?
Place the cursor in an editable text box, then press Windows+H. You can also open Voice Typing from the microphone key on the touch keyboard. Because it is designed for dictation, it does not replace the keyboard and mouse for navigating Windows or controlling other app functions. See Microsoft’s feature FAQ.
Can Voice Access control your computer?
Yes. Voice Access can start when you are not focused in a text box and accepts spoken commands for Windows and supported app interactions, in addition to dictation. To open it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Speech, or search for Voice Access from Start. Microsoft documents it for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover starting the feature and configuring a microphone.

Choose a Voice Access mode
Voice Access starts in a mode that combines commands and dictation. You can switch to commands-only when you want spoken input treated as commands, or dictation-only when you want speech treated as text in an editable field. For command practice, Microsoft provides an interactive getting-started guide and a command list.
Does Voice Access work offline?
Voice Access needs an internet connection during initial setup to download language files. After that download, Microsoft says speech recognition runs on the device and Voice Access can be used without an internet connection. Setup also includes microphone configuration. Read Microsoft’s setup instructions. The cited documentation does not establish whether Voice Typing works offline, so don’t assume it has the same offline behavior.

Which Windows speech tool is better for dictation?
For straightforward speech-to-text in a text field, start with Voice Typing: press Windows+H while the field is focused. Choose Voice Access instead if you also need spoken commands—for example, to navigate, interact with controls, or edit dictated text through speech. It is not a matter of one tool universally recognizing speech better; the documented distinction is what each tool lets you do.

Microsoft lists Voice Typing for Windows 10 and Windows 11, while Voice Access is available on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Voice Access supports specific language and regional variants, including English (US, UK, India, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia); Spanish (Spain and Mexico); French (France and Canada); German (Germany); Simplified Chinese (China); Traditional Chinese (Taiwan); Japanese; and Italian. Check Microsoft’s current setup and language information before relying on a particular variant. The documented list of Voice Typing languages is not established here, so these sources do not support a comparison of which tool covers more languages.
