Microsoft has not confirmed Windows 11 version 27H2. A 2027 release that could bring PCs on different Windows 11 platform branches back together is a forecast reported by Windows Central, not an announced Microsoft roadmap. The distinction matters especially for owners of 26H1 devices: Microsoft says they will have a future update path, but its support article does not name 27H2 as the destination.
Is Windows 11 27H2 officially confirmed?
No. As of October 3, 2026, the Microsoft sources reviewed do not confirm the 27H2 name, release date, platform, features, eligible devices, rollout, or support lifecycle. The idea of a 2027 release comes from Windows Central’s September 30, 2026 report. Its timing and platform-convergence claims should be read as reporting and forecast, not as Microsoft commitments.

Microsoft’s documented plan is narrower: Windows 11 26H2 is the annual feature update for 2026. Microsoft describes annual feature updates as arriving in the second half of the year, but that cadence does not establish a 27H2 release date.

Why are 26H1 and 26H2 on different paths?
The uncertainty around 27H2 stems from a real split in the Windows 11 release branches. Microsoft says 26H1 is a specialized release for select new devices, not an update designed for existing PCs. It uses a different Windows core from 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2, which share a servicing branch.

| Release or forecast | Platform and audience | Update model or path | What is established |

| Windows 11 26H1 | Different Windows core; specialized for select new devices | Not designed for existing devices; Microsoft says these devices cannot take the next annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026 | Microsoft says 26H1 devices will have an update path in a future Windows release, but does not name it |
| Windows 11 26H2 | Shares a servicing branch with 24H2 and 25H2 | Delivered as an enablement package, according to Microsoft’s Release Preview announcement | Microsoft identifies it as the 2026 annual feature update |
| Windows 11 27H2 | Unknown; broad availability and a shared platform are forecast by Windows Central | Unknown; a fuller OS upgrade is speculation in that report | Microsoft has not confirmed the release or its details |

When might Windows 11 27H2 arrive?
There is no Microsoft-confirmed date. Windows Central expects a 2027 release, possibly in September or October, based on its reporting and unnamed sources. That estimate fits the general second-half cadence Microsoft describes for annual feature updates, but the cadence does not verify the predicted year or months.
Microsoft’s continuous-innovation guidance also says features can arrive through periodic servicing and Microsoft Store updates. A feature associated with Windows 11 therefore need not wait for a named annual release or be exclusive to it.

Will 27H2 be a major platform upgrade?
That is possible, but not confirmed. Windows Central forecasts that 27H2 could bring 26H1 and 26H2 users onto a shared platform and speculates it may be a fuller OS upgrade rather than another enablement package. A new platform would be a plausible way to bridge the current branch split, but Microsoft has not announced that design.
The report also discusses a possible newer platform, including a Strontium connection. That is the reporter’s theory, not a Microsoft-announced codename or platform commitment. The practical conclusion is that the “major platform upgrade” description remains a forecast, not a settled product characteristic.
Will a 26H1 PC get 27H2, or require new hardware?
Microsoft says 26H1 devices will receive an update path in a future Windows release, while also saying they cannot take the next annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026. The support article does not identify that future release as 27H2. Windows Central’s expectation that 27H2 will bring 26H1 and 26H2 devices together is not a compatibility guarantee.

Microsoft has not published 27H2 system requirements or eligibility rules, so it is not possible to say whether a particular PC will qualify or whether new hardware will be required. Do not buy a PC or upgrade accessory based on the current 27H2 forecast. Microsoft’s lifecycle page says 26H2 is the last Windows 11 version to support devices with Snapdragon 850 processors; that statement does not establish what 27H2 will support.
What features are coming in 27H2?
No 27H2 feature list has been confirmed by Microsoft in the sources reviewed. Because Windows features can also arrive through servicing and Store updates, it would be premature to assign rumored or forthcoming Windows features to 27H2 as exclusive launch features.
Microsoft’s general support policy gives annual feature updates 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. Those policy periods do not establish 27H2’s edition availability or specific support dates; Microsoft’s lifecycle page does not list 27H2.

Do you need installation media for a future feature update?
No special USB purchase is established as necessary for a normal feature update. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page documents several installation routes: Installation Assistant for the current device, USB/DVD installation media, and ISO files. A clean install or reinstall is different from the ordinary feature-update path.
If you choose to create USB installation media, Microsoft specifies a blank drive with at least 8 GB of capacity and warns that its contents will be erased. Back up important files before installing Windows. These are general installation-media precautions, not requirements announced for 27H2.
