To create another Windows 11 sign-in after setup, open Settings > Accounts > Other user > Add account. Choose a Microsoft account, or select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information and then Add a user without a Microsoft account to make a local account. A sign-in account, the name Windows displays, and the profile folder under C:Users are related but not interchangeable.
What Windows means by an account, a username, and a profile
A Windows account lets a person sign in to a shared device with their own associated settings, documents, and applications. The account is the sign-in identity; its displayed name is the label you see in Windows. Windows also associates the account with a user profile folder, typically found under C:Users. Microsoft’s account-management guidance explains adding users, while its profile-recovery instructions describe creating a new profile and copying files into it.

If you mean the screen shown during the first time you turn on a new PC, the steps below should not be read as a walkthrough of those setup screens. Microsoft’s published instructions cited here cover adding and managing accounts after Windows setup; they do not establish the current sequence of first-run prompts across editions, regions, devices, or updates.

Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account for Windows sign-in, citing integration with Microsoft services, enhanced security, and syncing. A local account is an alternative when you want a sign-in specific to that device. The differences documented by Microsoft are summarized here.

| Account type | Sign-in and device scope | Services and sync | May suit someone who… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local account | Created on and specific to one device; can be used to sign in without an internet connection. | Not connected to Microsoft cloud services; settings, files, and applications are limited to that device. | Wants a device-specific sign-in and does not need Windows-account syncing across devices. |
| Microsoft account | Associated with an email address and password and usable across multiple devices and Microsoft services. | Connects Windows to Microsoft cloud services; settings and files can sync across devices. | Wants connected Microsoft services and cross-device syncing. |
These are the documented account distinctions; they do not establish which prompts every new PC will show during first-run setup.
Add a user after Windows setup
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts > Other user.
- Under Add other user, select Add account.
- Enter the person’s existing Microsoft-account email and follow the prompts, or use the option for a local account: select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Follow the remaining prompts to finish creating the account.
These are Microsoft’s documented post-setup steps. The account added this way is a separate user on the device, rather than a change to the account you are already using.

Choose a local username that can sign in
For a local account, the username must be different from every other username on that device. Microsoft also warns that non-standard font characters, such as Wingdings characters, are unsupported and may prevent sign-in. Its reviewed guidance does not give a complete allowed-character list or full username-length rules, so avoid relying on unusual symbols and do not assume an undocumented limit.

Change a displayed account name—or replace a profile
Change the name shown for an account
For a personal Microsoft account, update the name on its Your info page. A work or school account may be governed by the organization’s policy. For a local account, open Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account name. Microsoft says a name change may take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere.

This changes the displayed account name. Microsoft’s cited name-change guidance does not establish that it renames the profile folder under C:Users.
Replace a corrupted user profile
Changing a displayed name is not the same as replacing a damaged profile. Microsoft’s corrupted-profile instructions describe creating a new account and copying files into its new profile folder. Some email, app, and Store sign-ins may require separate attention.

Decide whether the new account needs administrator access
Microsoft advises limiting administrator accounts because administrators can change settings, install software, and access all files. It describes standard accounts as safer for everyday use. Choose privileges according to what the person needs to do; the cited guidance does not establish which privilege level Windows assigns by default during first-run setup.
