Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo get a free command-line tool in front of its first users, make the path from discovery to a successful first command easy to follow: explain who it helps, show how to install and try it, choose distribution channels that fit the tool, publish clear releases, and make feedback straightforward. This is a repeatable launch process—not a promise of a particular number of users.
1. Explain the tool before asking people to install it
Your project page or README should let a visitor decide quickly whether the tool is relevant. Put the audience, the task it helps with, and one concise example near the top. Describe the outcome in the user’s terms rather than leading with implementation details.

A useful opening answers three questions: Who is this for? What job does it make easier? What would a first command look like?

2. Make the first successful command easy to reach
Place the installation command and a small, runnable first-use example near the top of the README. State prerequisites, supported operating systems, and any authentication or configuration needed to get a result. If the example needs a token, account, or file, explain that before the user reaches an error.

For JavaScript packages, npm documents package sharing and running packages with npx without downloading them first. That can reduce friction for some tools, but it is a JavaScript-specific option rather than a universal installation method. See npm’s documentation on npm.
3. Pick distribution routes that fit your users and implementation
There is no single package manager or release format every CLI should support. Consider where your intended users already work, what runtime or package manager they have, how they prefer to update software, and what you can maintain reliably.

| Route | Potential fit | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
npm and, where appropriate, npx |
JavaScript tools whose users already use the npm ecosystem | Does the user need Node.js? Is running through npx suitable for the tool’s workflow? |
| Homebrew | Users who install command-line software through Homebrew | Which supported systems and update process will you maintain? |
| WinGet | Windows users who install software through WinGet | Can you keep package metadata and releases aligned? |
| GitHub release assets | Users who can download a platform-specific binary or other release artifact | Which operating systems and architectures are actually supported, and how will users verify the files? |
These routes are not interchangeable, and the table is a planning aid rather than a conversion ranking. The official GitHub CLI project illustrates one tool distributed through Homebrew, WinGet, and release assets, with support across macOS, Linux, and Windows. Its choices are an example, not a requirement for other projects.
4. Make releases clear, usable, and verifiable
If GitHub is your release home, use tagged releases, useful notes describing what changed, and assets that match the platforms you claim to support. GitHub CLI’s manual for gh release create documents creating a release from a tag and generating release notes. Tell users what each artifact is for and include verification guidance when your project supports it.

Keep platform claims specific: list the systems and architectures available for that release rather than implying universal compatibility. The GitHub CLI project provides an example of a project documenting release-artifact verification; it does not establish that another project’s downloads have been verified.
5. Give early users a useful way to report problems
Link to the project’s issue tracker or another feedback channel you actively monitor. Tell people what makes a report actionable, such as the command they ran, the expected and actual result, relevant version and operating system, and a redacted error message. Warn users not to include secrets or private data.

6. Track progress through first use, not just attention
Page views and launch-post reactions can show that people saw an announcement; they do not show that someone installed the tool or found it useful. If you have suitable privacy-respecting analytics, define the steps you can observe and report only data you actually collect.

- Project-page visits
- Install attempts, where observable
- Successful first use, if the tool can measure it appropriately
- Repeat use, if you can observe it without collecting unnecessary user data
- Useful feedback, such as actionable bug reports or documented use cases
State the period, geography, and measurement method alongside any figures you publish. No conversion benchmark or target user count is established here, so treat the funnel as a way to find friction—not a promise of growth.
7. Use launch posts as one discovery route
Share the tool where its intended users already discuss the problem, and pair an announcement with useful documentation, examples, and relevant participation in those communities. Direct outreach can make sense when it is genuinely relevant and respectful. Avoid mass unsolicited messages or treating any platform as a guaranteed source of users.
There is no supported ranking of launch channels by performance. Try a small number of appropriate routes, note which ones lead to meaningful first use or feedback, and adjust based on what you can actually observe.

Turn the funnel into a launch checklist
- Clarify the promise: Put the intended user, task, and one example at the top of the project page.
- Prepare first use: Add the install command, prerequisites, supported systems, required configuration, and a runnable example.
- Choose distribution: Start with the routes that match your implementation and audience; add others only if you can maintain them.
- Prepare the release: Publish clear notes and platform-appropriate assets, and explain compatibility and verification where applicable.
- Open a feedback route: Link to a maintained channel and explain what details help diagnose a report.
- Observe and iterate: Track meaningful steps where appropriate, then improve the part of the path where users get stuck.
