A failed Windows 11 upgrade is rarely random. Start with the exact error code, because it usually points to the cause. A code beginning 0xC1900101 usually means a driver problem. A 0x80070070 code likely means the system drive is short on space. Other failures come from missing updates on the current version or an interrupted download. This guide walks through the checks in the order that avoids unnecessary risk, and it flags where data could be lost.
Step 1: Capture the exact error
Write down the full code, where the process stopped, and whether Setup rolled back with a message such as “Reverting changes.” Don’t diagnose from the percentage where it stalled. If the message is generic, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history, find the failed update, and note its code. Microsoft says a generic rollback message means you need to find the specific code before investigating further, as described in its upgrade and installation errors guide.
Step 2: Confirm eligibility and install pending updates
- Check the requirements. Review Windows 11 system requirements. For a consumer PC that isn’t managed by an IT administrator, PC Health Check can assess it. A work or school PC should follow that organization’s upgrade process.
- Check your starting version. To upgrade through Windows Update, the PC must run Windows 10 version 2004 or later.
- Install current updates. Microsoft says the Windows 11 offer might not appear until available updates for your existing version are installed. Install them, restart, and check again. After you make changes to meet requirements, wait for Windows Update to show that the upgrade is ready. See Getting ready for the Windows 11 upgrade.
- Back up first. Copy important files somewhere safe before trying anything below.
The upgrade from Windows 10 is free from Microsoft. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s upgrade FAQ, so the upgrade is also the supported route for staying on a maintained Windows version.
Step 3: Match the code to the cause
| Symptom or code | Likely cause (per Microsoft) | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC1900101 (any suffix) | Usually a driver error | See the driver section below |
| 0x80070070 variants | Not enough free space for the upgrade | See the storage section below |
| “Update isn’t applicable” | Required updates may be missing | Install all pending updates for your current Windows version, then retry |
| Download interrupted, update server unavailable | Connection or server problem | Check your connection and retry; run the Windows Update troubleshooter |
| Windows Update service disabled | Service turned off | Enable the service, as listed in Microsoft’s error table |
| Corrupted or missing files | Damaged system or update files | Run the troubleshooter or DISM/SFC repair, depending on the specific code |
Use Microsoft’s error table for your exact code instead of running every repair command on every PC.

Fixing driver and device conflicts (0xC1900101)
Microsoft Support states: “An error that begins with 0xC1900101 is usually a driver error.” Its documented steps are listed below. They are options, and none is guaranteed to fix a particular failure.
- Install available Windows updates, hardware updates, and drivers.
- Check the device maker’s website for drivers for any hardware you added to the PC.
- Disconnect nonessential external storage, drives, docks, and other attached hardware, then retry.
- Open Device Manager and look for devices with a yellow warning symbol. Fix or update those first.
- Consider removing third-party security software, but only if you can reinstall it and have your activation details.
- If the problem continues, use Microsoft’s listed disk-check, clean-boot, and DISM system-file repair steps.
You don’t need a paid driver updater. Microsoft’s remedies rely on Windows Update and drivers from the device manufacturer.

Fixing low disk space (0x80070070)
Check free space on the system drive, usually C:. Then open Windows Storage settings and review Cleanup recommendations, temporary files, large or unused files, and unused apps. Microsoft’s free-up-space guide covers these tools. Move files you want to keep to external storage instead of deleting them.
Microsoft’s upgrade-error page says to free enough space but gives no single Windows 11 target in that section. The separate general Windows Update troubleshooting guidance lists 16 GB for a 32-bit OS and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. Treat those as figures for that context, not a universal Windows 11 requirement.

Installation media
Microsoft’s installation-media instructions require a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Creating the media deletes everything on the drive. The drive is optional and only needed if you choose this route. Back up your computer before installing or reinstalling.

Reinstall options
Microsoft’s reinstall guide separates an in-place reinstall from a clean installation. You can choose to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. Each choice has different consequences for your data and applications, so read the selected option before you continue.
Windows Update Assistant
The Windows Update Assistant is another manual feature-update path. Microsoft says it is supported on x86/64 devices and does not run on ARM-based PCs. Download it only from Microsoft’s official page.

Which step to take
- If the error code is unknown, check Update history first.
- If the PC doesn’t meet the requirements or is managed by an organization, resolve that before anything else.
- If the failure is a setup rollback with a 0xC1900101 code, work through the drivers and devices.
- If the code is 0x80070070, free space.
- Use media or reinstall only after backing up, and only when the targeted fixes have failed.
