A nickel metal hydride (NiMH or Ni-MH) battery is a rechargeable cell with a nickel-based positive electrode, a negative electrode made of a hydrogen-absorbing metal alloy, and an alkaline electrolyte, usually potassium hydroxide. The “metal hydride” in the name is the alloy that holds hydrogen inside the electrode. It replaced the cadmium negative electrode used in older nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells.
What “nickel metal hydride” means
Each half of the name points to an electrode. “Nickel” refers to the positive electrode, which uses nickel hydroxide and nickel oxyhydroxide as its active material. “Metal hydride” refers to the negative electrode, an alloy that can absorb and release hydrogen. The electrolyte is an alkaline solution, typically potassium hydroxide.

The battery is not a pressurized tank of hydrogen gas. The hydrogen is held within the solid alloy, as part of the electrode’s chemistry.
How a NiMH battery works
- Discharging: the metal hydride at the negative electrode releases hydrogen in a reaction, and nickel oxyhydroxide at the positive electrode is reduced to nickel hydroxide. This produces the current that powers the device.
- Charging: the useful reaction runs in reverse, so the alloy reabsorbs hydrogen and the positive electrode returns to nickel oxyhydroxide.
Because the chemistry reverses, NiMH is a secondary (rechargeable) battery. Energizer’s 2018 handbook describes typical use as several hundred recharge cycles and gives a typical expectancy of 2–5 years. Both are general statements, not warranties for any specific cell.

Voltage and standard sizes
Panasonic Energy lists its standard AA and AAA NiMH cells at a nominal 1.2 V, with capacity and operating specifications that vary by model. Energizer’s comparison table uses 1.25 V for NiMH. The gap reflects different manufacturer conventions, not different chemistry.
This matters because a NiMH cell does not have the same voltage profile as a single-use alkaline cell of the same shape. Physical fit does not prove compatibility. Check the device’s instructions for size, voltage, polarity and whether it accepts rechargeable cells. Larger and specialized NiMH cells and packs, such as Panasonic’s high-rate and infrastructure lines, are engineered for specific uses. An ordinary AA or AAA cell should not be swapped into them.

NiMH compared with alkaline and lithium
No chemistry wins in every case. Energizer’s handbook gives these general comparisons:
Recommended Free Tools
| Factor | NiMH | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Reusability | Rechargeable | Alkaline cells are single-use, so NiMH can pay off in frequently used devices. |
| High-rate drain | Performs well | Alkaline may last longer under light drain. |
| Low temperature | Better than alkaline in the handbook’s comparison | Primary lithium is stronger still. |
| Weight | Heavier than lithium | Primary lithium cells are lighter. |
| Self-discharge and storage | Compared across chemistries in the handbook | Retention depends on product design, storage time and conditions. |
Results depend on the cell, the device’s load, storage and temperature, so treat the table as a starting point rather than a prediction for your device.

Where NiMH is used
Energizer’s handbook names digital cameras, GPS units, MP3 players and other frequently used portable electronics. Panasonic lists radios, intercommunication systems, cordless phones and medical devices for its standard line. The US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center notes NiMH’s historical use in hybrid electric vehicles, along with engineering challenges in that setting. These are examples, not a compatibility list for a particular cell.
Charging
Use a charger specified for NiMH cells, and follow both the battery maker’s and the charger maker’s instructions. Charging characteristics and care vary between products, so no universal charge time or recipe applies. A charger built for another chemistry is not a safe substitute.

Recycling and disposal
The US EPA identifies NiMH as rechargeable and says: “Do not put rechargeable batteries in the trash or municipal recycling bins.” For removable batteries, it points U.S. consumers to specialized battery recyclers, participating retailers that accept batteries, or local household hazardous waste programs. Available options vary by location. Outside the U.S., check your local rules.
