Windows 11 Update Settings to Review Before Installing a Major Release

Review the Windows 11 update offered to your PC, its release status, restart settings, pause options, storage and power before installing a major release.

Before installing a major Windows 11 release, check what your PC is being offered, review known release issues and support status, and set expectations for restart timing. If the release is offered and your device is ready, you can install it; if you need more time, use Pause updates as a short-term delay rather than disabling updates indefinitely.

Should you install the Windows 11 update now?

There is no single right date for every PC. Decide based on the exact release offered to your device, its current known-issue status, your installed edition and version, and whether you can make time for a restart and installation.

  • Consider installing: Windows Update offers the release, Microsoft’s release-health information does not identify an issue relevant to your device, and your edition is approaching the end of support.
  • Consider waiting briefly: the release is not offered, a known issue appears relevant, or you cannot risk a restart during work. Check again later rather than assuming the release is available to every PC at once.

Microsoft phases some updates, so availability can differ by device. Open Settings > Windows Update to see your device’s status and available updates, then check the Windows release health dashboard and the notes for the specific version. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ distinguishes feature updates, which introduce functionality, from more frequent quality updates, which mainly contain fixes and security updates. Automatic feature-update offers apply to consumer and non-managed business devices; managed work or school PCs may follow administrator policies.

Check support status for your edition

As of Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 release notes, Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. The notes give October 12, 2027 as the end-of-updates date for version 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions. These dates apply to those editions and that version, not to every Windows 11 PC. Confirm your installed version and edition, and check the current notes before deciding: Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 release notes.

Review the settings that affect update timing

Choose whether to receive eligible updates early

In Settings > Windows Update, the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available toggle prioritizes eligible non-security updates, fixes, features, and improvements for your device. It does not guarantee that a major release will appear immediately: Microsoft still phases availability. Regular security updates continue whether the toggle is on or off, according to Microsoft’s toggle guidance.

Set Active hours to avoid inconvenient restarts

Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment based on your activity, or set the hours yourself. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting at inconvenient times; they do not replace installing important updates. See Microsoft’s Active hours guidance.

Pause only when you need a bounded delay

Use Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates to select an end date. Microsoft’s current guidance allows a pause of up to 35 days; the interface may let you extend it as long as the new end date remains within 35 days of the current date. After the pause ends, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. This is a temporary scheduling control, not a permanent way to turn updates off. Details: Microsoft’s Pause updates guidance.

Prepare storage and power before installing

  • Check the space warning in Windows Update. Microsoft does not establish one free-space minimum that applies to every major release. Follow the message on your PC or the requirements for the specific release rather than relying on a universal number.
  • Free space if needed. Remove files or apps you no longer need, or move files to another drive, such as an external USB drive. Microsoft lists these as options in its Windows Update FAQ.
  • Connect portable devices to power. Keep a laptop or tablet plugged in while updates install.
