Windows 11 Update: How to Check Whether It’s Genuine

Use Settings > Windows Update to check available updates. Learn why unsolicited download prompts are suspicious and how to scan a PC after running one.

To check whether a Windows 11 update is real, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and review the status and available updates there. Don’t use an unsolicited browser pop-up or unfamiliar download as your route to an update. Microsoft says updates can arrive at different times on eligible devices, so a delay by itself does not mean an offer is fake.

Where to check for a Windows 11 update

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Review the update status and any updates offered on that page. If you want to check manually, use the check-for-updates control there.

Microsoft says Windows 11 downloads and installs updates automatically, and documents this Settings page as the place to check for updates: Windows Update: FAQ.

Updates may be rolled out in stages, partly to address readiness and compatibility. An update not appearing on your device at the same time as it appears elsewhere is not, by itself, evidence of fraud.

What makes an update offer suspicious?

Pay attention to where the offer came from and what it asks you to do. A browser ad, unsolicited pop-up, or unfamiliar site that urges you to download and run an update executable is suspicious. This is a practical warning sign, not a forensic test that proves a particular file is malicious.

  • It comes from outside Windows Update: A webpage’s claim that an update is official does not authenticate it.
  • It asks you to run a downloaded file: Prefer the built-in Windows Update page rather than executing an installer from an unfamiliar source.
  • It uses deceptive or coercive tactics: Microsoft flags software that falsely claims to be from Microsoft, disguises what it does, installs without clear consent, or uses alarming pressure as potentially unwanted behavior. Those characteristics are reasons for caution, but they do not independently prove a specific file is malicious.

Microsoft describes SmartScreen as protection against phishing and malicious websites, applications, and downloads. Its guidance can help explain why an offer is concerning, but there is no universal visual checklist that authenticates every update prompt. See Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview and How Microsoft identifies malware and potentially unwanted applications.

How Windows Update checks downloads

Microsoft documents that Windows Update metadata exchanges use HTTPS and that downloaded update files are checked using digital signatures and file hashes before installation. These are part of the system’s update-validation process; a filename, version label, or logo displayed by an external prompt is not an equivalent verification. Details are in Windows Update security.

If the message says Windows is not genuine

A “Windows isn’t genuine” or activation notice concerns licensing and activation; it does not establish whether a separate update prompt or download is authentic. Microsoft defines genuine Windows as software published by Microsoft, properly licensed, and supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. Its activation guidance explains how a product key or digital entitlement is associated with device hardware. Investigate the notice through Microsoft’s About Genuine Windows guidance rather than treating it as proof about an update.

If you already ran a suspicious installer

  1. Don’t run the file again.
  2. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and start a scan. Microsoft’s guidance on protecting your PC from unwanted software describes using Defender scans.
  3. If unwanted software persists, consider a Microsoft Defender Offline scan, which Microsoft describes as a further step.
  4. If you entered a password on the suspicious page, change it from a trusted device.

When the device is managed by work or school

An employer or school may control Windows Update policies, so update timing or interface behavior can differ from a personal PC. If the Windows Update page looks unexpected or a policy blocks an update, check with your IT administrator rather than using an external download. Microsoft documents administrative control over Windows Update behavior in its Windows Update FAQ.
