What Error 0x8007000d Means on Windows 11
Error 0x8007000d maps to data is invalid. On Windows 11, that usually indicates one of these issues during update install:
- Corrupted Windows Update metadata or cached downloads (SoftwareDistribution/Download issues).
- Broken servicing stack / component store, causing DISM or CBS operations to fail.
- Invalid or conflicting update state left behind by a previous failed attempt.
- Network/DNS instability leading to incomplete or mismatched payloads.
It’s common after feature updates or cumulative updates, especially when a prior download/install was interrupted.

Before You Start: Prerequisites and Quick Checks
These small checks prevent you from chasing the wrong problem.
- Check storage: aim for at least 20–25 GB free on the system drive (C:). Updates often need staging space.
- Check power: plug in your laptop. Windows Update can fail under low battery or sleep.
- Ensure time sync: wrong date/time can break TLS certificate validation.
- Restart first: a reboot clears many transient Windows Update locks.
If you’re ready, start with the standard troubleshooter path, then escalate to reset + servicing repairs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Microsoft’s troubleshooter is still the fastest way to resolve common metadata and service registration problems.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and click Run.
- Follow the prompts, then reboot.
- Try Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Fix 2: Verify Date/Time, Power Mode, and Disk Space
When Windows fails to validate download payloads or can’t stage files, you’ll often see data-related errors like 0x8007000d.
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Set Power mode to Best performance temporarily.
- Confirm free space: open File Explorer > This PC and check the C: drive.
If free space is tight (under ~15 GB), clear space first, then retry the update.
Fix 3: Restart Windows Update Services and Retry
This clears “stuck” update states without fully wiping the update cache.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, press Enter. - In the Services list, locate and restart these services in order:
- Windows Update
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
- Cryptographic Services
- Right-click each service > Restart (or Start if stopped).
- Reboot, then retry Windows Update.
If the restart doesn’t change anything, move to the full component reset.
Fix 4 (Most Proven): Reset Windows Update Components
This is the most common “works when everything else fails” fix. It forces Windows to rebuild update metadata and redownload corrupted payloads.
Run the reset commands (Command Prompt as Admin)
Use these commands in an elevated terminal. If you’ve tried this before, still follow it exactly—small typos matter.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Press Win, type Command Prompt or cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt > Run as administrator.
- Stop Windows Update-related services by running:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver
- Rename the update folders (these hold cached files/metadata):
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
- Restart the services:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
net start msiserver
- Reboot your PC.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
Gotcha: if you see “Access is denied” on the rename step, stop services again and ensure no other update process is running.
Fix 5: Repair the Component Store with DISM
When Windows servicing metadata is damaged, DISM can repair the Windows image store that updates depend on. This is especially useful for error states that persist across retries.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run this first (online repair):
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for completion (it can take 10–30 minutes depending on system speed and network).
- Reboot when finished.
If the command fails due to source issues, you may need an alternate source (for example, mounting an ISO and pointing DISM to it). See the troubleshooting section if DISM doesn’t complete.
Fix 6: Repair System Files with SFC
SFC checks and repairs protected Windows files. Think of it as the follow-up that cleans up what DISM can’t or didn’t replace.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Check the result:
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC fixed issues.
- “found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means you likely need DISM first (or use alternate sources).
- Reboot, then retry Windows Update.
Fix 7: Clean Up Pending Update/Update Cache Conflicts
Sometimes the system is holding onto a broken transaction. Clearing pending operations can help Windows exit that failed state.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Stop update services:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
- Clear the BITS queue and temporary update files (safe, but it forces redownload):
Del /F /S /Q %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat
- Restart services:
net start wuauserv
net start bits
- Reboot and retry Windows Update.
If you already did the full reset in Fix 4, this may be unnecessary—but it can help with repeated partial failures.
Fix 8: Fix Network and DNS Issues That Break Download/Install
Windows updates use HTTPS endpoints and download integrity checks. If DNS returns inconsistent results, updates can fail with “invalid data” symptoms.

- Choose Use the following DNS server addresses and set:
- Preferred DNS: 1.1.1.1
- Alternate DNS: 8.8.8.8
- Flush DNS:
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart and retry the update.
Also check that the system date/time is correct (Fix 2). TLS failures often look like unrelated update errors.
Fix 9: Install the Update via Microsoft Update Catalog
If Windows Update keeps failing, bypass it by downloading the same package directly. This avoids broken metadata flows while still using Microsoft’s signed installer.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Note the failing update KB number (for example, KB503xxx).
- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog in a browser.
- Search the KB number and download the correct architecture package (usually x64 for most Windows 11 PCs).
- Install the downloaded package and reboot.
Gotcha: feature updates and servicing stack updates may have multiple related packages. If the KB list is confusing, focus on the exact failed KB shown by Windows Update.
Fix 10: If You’re Stuck in a Boot Loop or Repeated Failures
If the update attempt repeatedly fails and the system becomes unstable, you may need to roll back or repair startup state before continuing.

If you can boot into Windows reliably, stick with Fix 4–6 first. Offline repairs are powerful but require more care.
Common Mistakes That Keep Error 0x8007000d Returning
- Rushing retries without rebooting. Windows locks and pending operations can persist.
- Running DISM before basic health checks. Fixing update cache and servicing issues in the wrong order wastes time.
- Using unstable networks. Wi‑Fi switching mid-download is a classic cause of invalid payloads.
- Ignoring storage pressure. Low disk space causes staging failures that show up as unrelated codes.
- Forgetting to stop services when resetting cache. If SoftwareDistribution isn’t properly handled, downloads won’t regenerate cleanly.
Troubleshooting When Fixes Don’t Work
When the “main” fixes fail, you need targeted moves based on what failed: download stage, servicing stage, or system health.
1) DISM fails during /RestoreHealth
Common cause: Windows can’t reach the source files it needs. Try again with a stable connection and confirm time sync. If it still fails, use an offline source via a Windows 11 ISO and run DISM with a specified source (you’ll be pointing to install.wim or sources\install.esd).
2) SFC reports it can’t repair corrupt files
Run DISM first (Fix 5), reboot, then run SFC again. If it still can’t repair, the system store may require an offline servicing workflow or a reset of the OS image health using a known-good source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3) Resetting update components doesn’t help
Check that Windows Update and BITS are actually running after the reset. Then verify you don’t have third-party security software intercepting update downloads. Temporarily disable protection and retest (re-enable after).

4) Install via Update Catalog still fails
If a direct package fails too, the problem is likely on the servicing health layer (component store/system files). Re-run DISM + SFC, then retry the same KB package.
5) Check logs for the real failure point
For repeat failures, review Windows Update and servicing logs (not guesswork). Useful locations include:
- C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsUpdate\
- C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ (servicing-related failures)
Search for the exact KB number around the timestamp of your failed install.

Windows 11 Update Error 0x8007000d FAQs (2024)
Will resetting Windows Update components delete my files?
No. Renaming SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 affects update downloads and metadata. Your personal files are not removed.
Is 0x8007000d specific to Windows 11 23H2 or 24H2?
It’s not limited to one release. You can see it across cumulative updates and servicing operations on different Windows 11 builds.
