TCL is overtaking LG in TVs sold globally

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reports that TCL is overtaking LG in TVs sold globally are showing up for a reason: TCL has been consistently stacking features, brightness options, and game-ready specs at prices that undercut what many buyers expect from premium brands.

This shift matters because it changes what you can realistically buy at each budget tier—especially if you’re shopping online, comparing “spec sheets,” or trying to find a TV that performs well for HDR movies and console gaming without paying flagship pricing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Below is a practical breakdown of why TCL’s global momentum is rising, how TCL and LG typically differ in real-world viewing, and exactly what to check before you buy.

What it means when TCL is overtaking LG

When a brand overtakes another in global TV sales, it usually reflects a combination of broader availability, stronger pricing-to-performance, and product range that fits more households—not a sudden “overnight leap” in picture quality.

TCL 55-Inch F7D Series QLED 4K UHD HDR Smart Fire TV, 55F7D (2026)
  • 4K UltraHD QLED color: Quantum Dot technology delivers over a billion vibrant, true-to-life shades in every scene
  • HDR PRO+: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 & HLG for enhanced contrast, accurate color, and fine detail across every format
  • Dolby Atmos + DTS:X: Full spatial audio support across both major formats - Dolby Atmos and DTS:X/DTS Virtual:X - for broader soundbar and content compatibility
  • Auto Game Mode (ALLM) + Game Bar: Automatic low-latency switching plus an on-screen overlay to fine-tune settings without leaving the game
  • Motion Rate 240 with MEMC: Best-in-class motion clarity for fast sports and action, double the motion rating of typical competing QLEDs, for an ultra-crisp, blur-free picture

For shoppers, the most tangible impact is availability: more TCL models on shelves, more frequent discounts, and more consistent options across 43, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inch classes. That makes side-by-side comparisons easier—and also makes it easier to buy yourself into the right panel and brightness tier.

Why TCL’s global TV momentum is accelerating

Pricing and value positioning

TCL has built its reputation around value: strong basic picture quality in the entry tier, then an aggressive push into brighter HDR (often via mini-LED on higher models) as the budget climbs.

In practical terms, you’re more likely to find a TCL set with a high-refresh option, multiple HDMI inputs, and modern HDR support at a price that would have previously “bought you” a lower-spec LG model.

Mini-LED and brightness-per-dollar

One of the biggest reasons value buyers notice the shift is HDR impact. In many markets, TCL has offered mini-LED options that can reach higher peak brightness than typical edge-lit designs at similar prices.

Higher brightness doesn’t automatically mean better accuracy, but it often improves HDR punch—especially for highlights in scenes (streetlights, explosions, and bright skies) where mid-tier TVs can look “washed.”

Scale, manufacturing, and supply stability

Global scale affects availability and pricing. If a company can reliably source panels and components at scale and produce enough units, retailers can stock more options and keep discounts more consistent across regions.

That stability tends to show up as fewer long delays for popular sizes and less “gap pricing” where only one model is discounted at a given time.

Software and platform choices

Smart TV performance and app compatibility matter because most viewers use streaming apps daily. TCL’s broader adoption of widely supported platforms (commonly Google TV or Android TV variants depending on region) helps with app availability and voice/search integration.

Just note that software updates and long-term support can vary by region and model year. If longevity is your priority, check the seller’s details for the exact TV model and region before buying.

TCL vs LG: how the two brands typically compete

LG and TCL usually compete at different points on the value map, but both can deliver excellent results when you buy the right tier. The key is understanding what you’re paying for: panel type, local dimming capability, processing strength, and gaming features.

Picture processing and HDR handling

LG is often praised for processing consistency—especially around motion handling and clean handling of varied content. TCL commonly counters with strong HDR brightness options and competitive local-dimming implementations at more approachable price points.

In showroom lighting, TCL’s brighter highlights can look especially compelling. In controlled dark-room viewing, LG’s processing strengths often show up more in subtle gradients and motion clarity—when you choose a well-specified model.

Gaming performance (HDMI 2.1, VRR, latency)

If you game, don’t just search for “4K 120Hz.” Confirm the TV actually supports HDMI 2.1 features you’ll use: VRR (variable refresh rate), ALLM (auto low-latency mode), and whether 4K 120Hz is available on the specific HDMI ports.

TCL sets in mid-to-high tiers often include multiple HDMI 2.1 ports. LG offerings can vary by model year—some are excellent, and some require you to pick the correct port or enable specific settings.

Smart TV ecosystems

LG’s webOS has a long track record for a responsive UI. TCL often uses Google TV/Android TV frameworks depending on the region. Both can be fast when optimized, but the “best” experience depends on whether you prefer one ecosystem’s layout and recommendations.

For most users, the bigger factor is whether the TV supports your apps reliably (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Apple TV app where applicable) and whether it has enough storage/RAM to avoid slowdowns after months of use.

Sound and speaker hardware

Many buyers underestimate audio differences. If you’re using the TV speakers, check whether the model supports Dolby Audio processing or higher-power drivers. If you’re using a soundbar, prioritize HDMI eARC and optical output compatibility.

In general, “thin” designs can sacrifice speaker volume and bass depth. A soundbar can erase a lot of that gap instantly.

How to choose: TCL or LG for your specific use case

If you care most about value

Choose TCL when your priority is getting high HDR impact, modern gaming features, and a strong feature bundle for the lowest price in your budget range.

Look specifically for models with local dimming (often mini-LED on higher tiers) and check for HDMI 2.1/VRR support on at least one, preferably more, HDMI ports.

If you want the most consistent upscaling and motion

Choose LG when your viewing mix includes lots of sports, live TV, and lower-bitrate streaming where processing consistency can make a visible difference.

Pair that with your preferred refresh rate settings, and make sure the model supports the refresh modes you’ll actually use.

If you game on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S

Choose the TV that matches your gaming requirements on paper: HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz, VRR support, and low latency mode behavior.

If the TCL model you’re considering offers multiple HDMI 2.1 ports, it’s often more convenient for a console + streaming box setup.

If you watch sports and fast motion

Choose the TV that offers good motion handling and a comfortable motion interpolation setting. For many people, LG’s processing reputation can be an advantage in this category.

That said, the best sports results still depend on native refresh rate support, motion clarity tuning, and how you handle blur reduction features.

If you stream mostly on Netflix and YouTube

Either brand can work well here. The practical difference is often about HDR format support, upscaling quality, and whether the UI remains responsive after months.

If you notice stuttering in demos, consider running streaming through an external device (Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, or a gaming console) for a consistent experience.

What to check before you buy (regardless of brand)

Brand rivalry matters less than the specific model tier. Use this checklist like a buying spec sheet.

Panel and backlight type

  • Direct-lit / mini-LED: often better HDR brightness and more convincing local contrast.
  • Edge-lit: can look fine for SDR but may struggle with highlight blooming in bright scenes.
  • OLED (if applicable): best for contrast, but burn-in risk exists with static content. (LG’s OLED lines are the main example.)

HDR formats and tone mapping

  • Confirm support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision if you watch Dolby Vision content.
  • Check whether the TV supports HLG for broadcast use.
  • Verify HDR is handled well in “Game Mode” if you play HDR games.

HDMI 2.1 features and gaming specs

  • Look for 4K 120Hz support.
  • Confirm VRR (variable refresh rate) and ALLM.
  • Make sure the console signal is compatible with the HDMI port (some TVs route 120Hz to fewer ports).

Input lag and refresh rate targets

If you play fast games, you want low input lag. Even if two TVs both say “120Hz,” differences in processing can change real latency.

When available, look for published measurements (often around the 10–20 ms range in game mode for many modern TVs), but prioritize confirmed reviews for the exact model you’re buying.

Wi‑Fi, remote, and audio outputs

  • Wi‑Fi standards: prefer modern Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 support if listed.
  • Audio: confirm eARC if you use a soundbar that supports it.
  • Remote: check if it includes dedicated streaming buttons you care about (varies by region).

Common traps when comparing TCL and LG TVs

Confusing model tier with panel class

A “budget TCL” and a “budget LG” can look similar on paper, but the underlying panel/backlight approach may be totally different. That’s why HDR can look dramatically different even at the same screen size.

Always compare the exact features: mini-LED/local dimming, HDR formats, and HDMI 2.1.

Assuming smart TV speed equals picture quality

Smart OS performance is separate from image processing. A fast UI doesn’t guarantee better motion, and a slower UI doesn’t necessarily mean weaker HDR.

If your priority is picture quality, evaluate video processing features first—apps second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overpaying for thin designs that compromise speakers

Many shoppers spend extra for a slimmer chassis and then use a soundbar anyway. In those cases, you should compare TVs by video specs and eARC support, not by how thin they are.

Buying the wrong size for your viewing distance

Screen size changes perceived immersion more than small spec differences. A common baseline is roughly 1.0–1.5x screen height for many living rooms, but lighting and seating distance matter.

If you’re unsure, start with the room measurement and choose a size that keeps you from constantly craning your neck.

Troubleshooting and longevity: what can go wrong

Smart TV slowdowns or app crashes

Try these in order: restart the TV, clear the app cache (in the TV’s app settings), and update the firmware if updates are available.

If the problem persists only in one app, test the same app through an external streaming device to isolate whether the TV or app is the culprit.

Wi‑Fi dropouts

  • Move the TV closer to the router or use a mesh node.
  • Switch the TV to a 5 GHz band if available (avoid crowded 2.4 GHz).
  • Test with an Ethernet adapter if you’re serious about stability.

VRR/HDMI 2.1 quirks with consoles

If 4K 120Hz or VRR behaves inconsistently, confirm two things: the HDMI port you’re using is labeled for the highest bandwidth mode, and Game Mode is enabled in the TV picture settings.

Then power-cycle in this order: power off console and TV, connect HDMI, power on TV, then power on console and re-check the console video settings.

Burn-in and static UI (best practices)

If you use an OLED TV (commonly LG OLED) and watch content that includes static elements for long stretches (news tickers, channel logos, HUD-heavy games), reduce risk by enabling pixel shifting and using screen savers where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For LCD/mini-LED, burn-in is less of a concern, but long static viewing can still lead to uniformity issues over very long time spans.

Realistic expectations: what “global overtake” doesn’t automatically mean

Even if TCL sells more TVs globally, that doesn’t guarantee every TCL model beats every LG model. You can still buy an LG set that looks better in motion or handles certain HDR scenes more gracefully, especially in premium categories.

What the trend does tell you is that TCL is getting serious across more tiers, and it’s increasingly hard for competitors to justify price without matching features like mini-LED/local dimming, HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz, and the HDR formats people actually use.

Bottom Line

If TCL is taking share from LG, it’s because value buyers are finding more “complete packages” at the price they’re willing to pay—especially in HDR brightness options and modern gaming readiness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the TV tier that matches your content (sports vs movies vs games) and verify the exact specs that matter—HDMI 2.1/VRR, HDR format support, and backlight type—rather than relying on brand reputation alone.

FAQs

Is TCL TV quality as good as LG?

In many mid-to-high tiers, TCL can match or exceed LG on HDR brightness and gaming features for less money. LG often has advantages in processing consistency and certain premium categories, especially where OLED is involved.

Should I buy TCL or LG for PS5?

Buy the TV that confirms HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz and VRR support on the HDMI port you’ll use. Then enable Game Mode and verify console settings for 120Hz and VRR.

Do TCL and LG support Dolby Vision?

Some models support Dolby Vision and others don’t, depending on the specific TV line and region. Always check the exact model’s supported HDR formats before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What matters more: refresh rate or HDR brightness?

Both matter, but for movies and streaming, HDR brightness and local dimming usually drive the biggest improvement. For competitive gaming, input lag and VRR support matter more than “marketing refresh rate” alone.

Will a soundbar make TCL vs LG differences irrelevant?

For many people, yes—if you’re comparing TV speakers, a soundbar (with HDMI eARC) can equalize the audio experience. Still, video processing differences remain, so choose based on HDR and gaming specs first.
