Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, but it does not require a separate, discrete TPM chip. A firmware TPM (fTPM) provides TPM functionality through platform firmware or a trusted execution environment; a discrete TPM (dTPM) is a dedicated chip. Either can meet the TPM requirement if the PC exposes TPM 2.0 and satisfies the other Windows 11 requirements.
What is the difference between a TPM and a firmware TPM?
TPM means Trusted Platform Module. It is a security component or implementation designed to provide hardware-based security functions, including generating and protecting cryptographic keys. The main difference between discrete and firmware TPMs is where and how that functionality is implemented—not whether one counts as a TPM.

| Implementation | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Discrete TPM (dTPM) | A dedicated TPM chip, traditionally soldered to the motherboard. | Confirm the exact motherboard and system firmware support it; a generic module is not necessarily compatible. |
| Integrated TPM | TPM functionality integrated with other platform components. | Check the PC maker’s specifications and documentation for the system’s TPM 2.0 support. |
| Firmware TPM (fTPM) | TPM 2.0 functionality implemented through platform firmware, often in a trusted execution environment on a system-on-chip. | Check that the device exposes TPM 2.0 and that its firmware configuration supports the feature. |
Microsoft describes discrete, integrated, and firmware-based TPM 2.0 implementations. The specific design and support depend on the PC and its manufacturer.

Does Windows 11 require a discrete TPM chip?
No. Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements specify TPM 2.0, not a discrete-only implementation. They separately require UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable. A firmware TPM can satisfy the TPM requirement when the system provides TPM 2.0; the PC must also meet the rest of Windows 11’s requirements.

What does a TPM do in Windows?
A TPM supports security functions rather than serving as a general-purpose performance component. Microsoft identifies key generation and secure storage, boot-integrity measurements, and attestation among its functions. Windows security features such as Windows Hello, BitLocker, and System Guard can use TPM capabilities.
BitLocker and device encryption
BitLocker can use a TPM to check system integrity during startup. If a device has no TPM, Microsoft says enabling BitLocker requires saving a startup key on removable storage; this is a separate configuration from choosing between firmware and discrete TPMs. See Microsoft’s BitLocker overview.

Having TPM 2.0 does not by itself mean automatic device encryption is enabled. Microsoft’s Windows 11 BitLocker guidance for OEMs lists additional conditions for automatic device encryption, including PCR 7 support and enabled UEFI Secure Boot. Feature availability and setup can also depend on the Windows edition, device, and configuration.

The cited Microsoft documentation describes implementation types and their functions, but does not establish a universal speed, security, or reliability winner between firmware and discrete TPMs. Those qualities depend on the platform and vendor implementation. Treat claims of a general performance or security advantage with caution unless they are supported by evidence for the specific devices being compared.

How to check which TPM your Windows PC has
- In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security and look for the security processor details, if shown.
- Check the PC maker’s specifications or support documentation for the exact model to identify its TPM implementation and supported settings.
- If Windows does not detect a TPM, consult the manufacturer’s UEFI instructions. Microsoft notes that TPM 2.0 may be disabled or hidden in UEFI settings and recommends Microsoft-provided TPM drivers. Menu names and options vary by device; see Microsoft’s TPM troubleshooting guidance.
Before changing TPM, Secure Boot, or BitLocker settings, follow the PC maker’s instructions and ensure you can access your recovery information. The effect of a settings change depends on the hardware and encryption configuration.
Should you buy a discrete TPM module?
Not based on the fTPM-versus-dTPM distinction alone. A discrete TPM must be integrated with the motherboard and system firmware, and module compatibility depends on the exact board, connector, firmware, and manufacturer support. Verify compatibility with the motherboard or PC maker before buying or installing any module.

Which TPM should you choose for Windows 11?
For Windows 11 eligibility, focus on whether your particular PC supports and exposes TPM 2.0—not on whether the implementation is firmware or discrete. Then check the other system requirements and the manufacturer’s documentation. For BitLocker or another security feature, confirm the feature’s requirements and whether it is configured on your device.
