Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Motion, leaks, soil moisture, temperature and appliance energy are five practical jobs sensors can handle in Home Assistant. They are useful examples—not a verified list of five particular cheap products. Home Assistant can represent readings from physical devices, services or calculations, and automations can respond when an entity changes.
What makes a sensor useful in Home Assistant?
A sensor is more than a number on a dashboard. Its state may be numeric or text, while its class and units help Home Assistant interpret what it represents. Some numeric state classes also support long-term statistics. The practical value comes when a reading helps you notice a condition or trigger a response.

1. Motion: turn a light on when someone arrives
A motion sensor can report a detected state and later a cleared state. Those changes can start or stop a light automation—for example, switch on a hallway light when motion is detected, then switch it off after the area is clear. Home Assistant documents triggers and conditions for motion-class binary sensors in its motion integration documentation.

- [Notes] An Aqara Hub is required and sold separately. (Not compatible with hubs from other brands.) Requires a secure 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection for Hub M2, M1S, E1, M1S Gen2, G2H Pro, and G2H; or 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi for Camera Hub G3. (Hub M2 also supports wired Ethernet via RJ45.)(*Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Door and Window Sensor main unit between the accessory unit is no more than 22 mm )
- [Proximity] For a sturdy connection, ensure that the Aqara Door and Window Sensor is within 400 inches of the Aqara Zigbee hub, and the hub is within the same range from the Wi-Fi router. Additionally, make sure the hub and the router are on the same local area network (LAN). Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
- [Unauthorized Entry Detection & Home Automation] The Zigbee Door Sensor alerts your phone and triggers the Aqara Hub's local alarm upon unexpected door/window openings. It also controls other Aqara devices based on door/window status. Conveniently check your door or window, kids room and anywhere you want to be notified. ***Requires Aqara Hub,not third-party hub.
- [0.86 Inch Wide Gap Allowed]The Aqara Door and Window Sensor works with most types of doors, windows, and other fixtures with similar mechanism, such as drawers, cabinets, and more.(Note: Please ensure that the surface where you plan to stick the Aqara Zigbee Door and Window Sensor is flat and easily adhesive, and the allowed gap between the door is up to 0.86 inch.) The main sensor unit dimension:1.61*0.87*0.43 inch, the magnet dimension:0.79*0.39*0.39 inch.
- [Hands-Free Voice Control]Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Alexa for a hands-free experience.- no need to go downstairs or pick up your phone again. You'll always know whether your home door is opening or closing (The Aqara Door and Window Sensor is not compatible with SmartThings currently.)
2. Leak detection: know when water is where it should not be
A wet/dry moisture sensor can alert you to water on a surface, such as near a washing machine or beneath a sink. That is different from an air humidity sensor: Home Assistant distinguishes surface or soil moisture from water vapor in the air. See the moisture integration documentation for the distinction.
3. Soil moisture: check a plant’s growing conditions
A soil-moisture reading can help you monitor potting soil and decide when to check or water a plant. It measures moisture in the soil, not atmospheric humidity. Confirm that the particular sensor reports a measurement Home Assistant can use; the category alone does not establish compatibility with a given model.

- [Hands-Free Voice Control] Enjoy a hands-free experience compatible with Apple HomeKit and Alexa. No need to go downstairs or pick up your phone again. You'll always know whether your home door is opening or closing. This sensor must be paired with an Aqara Hub to function. Note: This sensor requires an Aqara Hub (sold separately) to function. Without the hub, it cannot send notifications, trigger automations, or connect to HomeKit, Alexa, or IFTTT.
4. Temperature: automate around a threshold
A temperature sensor can provide a reading for display or an input to an automation, such as reacting when a room crosses a chosen threshold. Home Assistant’s automation triggers include measurement triggers for compatible units, alongside entity-change triggers. Consult the automation trigger documentation when choosing how to express the condition.
5. Energy-monitoring plug: see what an appliance uses
A compatible smart plug can measure energy flowing to an individual appliance. Power is the instantaneous rate of use; energy is the amount accumulated over time. Home Assistant’s individual device energy documentation explains how to track an appliance, while its Energy dashboard can show electricity, gas and water using compatible devices from different brands. Check that the plug exposes appropriate power or energy data for the intended view.

How to choose before buying
- Match the measurement to the job: motion, wet/dry leak detection, soil moisture, air humidity, temperature and energy are different kinds of information.
- Verify the integration and protocol: Home Assistant documents Zigbee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi options for energy monitoring, but this does not mean every device using one of those protocols is supported or works without additional hardware.
- Check the data Home Assistant receives: For a dashboard or Energy view, confirm that the device exposes the relevant state, units and measurement type.
- Check practical constraints on the exact model: Required hub or coordinator, power or battery needs, placement, range and any cloud dependency are model-specific; they are not established by the general use cases here.
Build the automation around the signal
Home Assistant automations can respond to entity changes—for example, a door opening, motion being detected or temperature crossing a threshold. Start by identifying the state or measurement the sensor provides, then select a trigger that matches it. The trigger documentation covers entity and measurement triggers; motion-class binary sensors also have documented motion-specific triggers and conditions.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Home Automation: The smart sensor can control GoveeLife intelligent devices in the same space and automatically turns them on or off when motion is detected. Ideal for areas such as bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms where hands-free operation is ideal.
