Narrator is built into Windows 11; open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator to switch it on, choose an available voice, and adjust the speech rate. If you also need visual enlargement, use Magnifier. Voice access is mainly for controlling Windows and dictating text—it is not a screen reader.
Choose the Windows feature that matches what you need
| Feature | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Narrator | Reading interface and document content while navigating Windows, apps, and the web | A built-in screen reader that announces content as you move through it with the keyboard or other supported controls. |
| Magnifier | Reading while also making on-screen content larger | Magnifies the display and can read text aloud on demand. |
| Voice access | Controlling the PC and creating or editing text by speaking | Listens to your spoken commands; it does not serve as a general screen reader. |
For the ordinary task of hearing screen content, start with Microsoft’s Narrator guide. Its voice and speech-rate options make it the most direct built-in choice for reading across Windows.

Turn on Narrator and have it read content
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter to start Narrator. Alternatively, open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator and turn Narrator on.
- Go to the app, webpage, or document you want to hear. Narrator reads and announces content as you navigate through it; it is a screen reader, not a separate player for pasting in a passage.
- In Narrator settings, select an available voice and change the speech rate to suit your listening preference. The available choices depend on your language and installed Windows features.
Choose a voice and check offline availability
Narrator settings may offer additional natural voices. To look for them, open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator > Add a natural voice. Microsoft’s current guide lists HD voices for US English, French, and Chinese; voice availability can vary by Windows version and rollout, so the exact list on your PC may differ.

Use Magnifier when you want speech and enlargement
If reading is easier with larger text or magnified screen content, use Magnifier instead of—or alongside your usual accessibility setup. Windows’ Magnifier can read text aloud on demand as well as enlarge what is displayed. See Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for its built-in reading options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand how Voice access differs
Voice access listens to you so you can control Windows and dictate or edit text with spoken commands. Narrator does the opposite: it speaks content from the screen. They can work together for some tasks—Voice access can issue certain Narrator commands, including “read selection”—but Microsoft documents limitations, and some Voice access functions do not work when it is used with a screen reader. Details are in Microsoft’s Voice access guide.

Voice access has a separate language setup: its initial setup requires an internet connection to download language files. After setup, its speech recognition can work offline on the device. Supported languages and dialects are specific; check Microsoft’s current Voice access support information if you need a particular one.
