Four well-supported open-source apps cover distinct jobs on a Windows PC: Sandboxie Plus isolates selected applications, Portmaster monitors and controls network activity, VeraCrypt encrypts data, and KeePassXC manages passwords. They are a practical shortlist, not a claim that one person installs them on every machine—and none replaces Windows’ built-in security protections.
What each app does—and when it is useful
“Security app” is an umbrella term here. These tools address different risks; they are not four interchangeable malware scanners. Install only the ones that solve a need you have, and check each project’s current Windows requirements and setup guidance before downloading.

| App | Task it addresses | Windows details | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandboxie Plus | Runs selected applications in an isolation layer intended to limit lasting changes to local or mapped drives and the Registry. | The project describes support for 64-bit Windows 7 and later. | Isolation is not a guarantee that untrusted software is safe. Sandboxie Plus is a community fork following the original project’s source release. |
| Portmaster | Monitors network activity and provides per-application settings and blocking, with secure DNS among its listed features. | The project supports Windows and Linux; its Windows integration uses a kernel driver and Windows Filtering Platform. | Some capabilities, including searchable activity history and its SPN privacy network, are marked paid. It is not a consequence-free replacement for Windows Firewall. |
| VeraCrypt | Encrypts data and storage to help protect data at rest. | The repository includes Windows build instructions; official Windows binary packages use digitally signed drivers. | Encryption depends on keeping the password and recovery plan usable. Losing access can make encrypted data inaccessible. |
| KeePassXC | Stores and organizes passwords in a password manager. | The project supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; its download page offers Windows 10 and 11 downloads. | You are responsible for protecting and backing up the password database and retaining a way to recover access. |
Which ones belong on your PC?
Choose Sandboxie Plus for a specific isolation need
Sandboxie Plus is relevant when you want to run a selected application with an isolation layer rather than let it freely make permanent changes to the system. Treat that layer as one risk-reduction measure, not as permission to run software you do not trust.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose Portmaster if you need more visibility over app connections
Portmaster can add per-app visibility and controls for network activity. Its Windows implementation operates through a kernel driver and Windows Filtering Platform, so consider the added system component and verify the current setup instructions. Do not assume all advertised capabilities are free.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Choose VeraCrypt for data that needs protection at rest
VeraCrypt is the fit when your concern is the confidentiality of stored data, such as files on a device or storage you encrypt. Before relying on encryption, decide how you will retain the password and recover the data if your usual access method is unavailable.
Choose KeePassXC to manage passwords
KeePassXC is the password-management option. Plan where the database backup will live and how you will regain access if the working copy is lost. The cited project information establishes the app and supported systems, but not a particular cloud-sync configuration; do not assume a sync workflow without checking the current documentation.

Keep Windows’ built-in protections enabled
These apps complement rather than replace the Windows security baseline. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus runs in the background by default and scans files and processes users open or download. Windows Firewall filters network traffic and supports domain, private, and public profiles as well as advanced rules. Microsoft warns that disabling the Firewall can increase vulnerability.

If Windows blocks a program you need, Microsoft guidance favors adding a necessary app exception over opening a port; do not allow an app you do not recognize. Avoid turning off the built-in Firewall to make another tool work. See Microsoft’s Firewall and network protection guidance and Windows Security guidance for the built-in controls.

A sensible order for setting them up
- Start with Windows Security. Confirm Windows Firewall and Defender Antivirus are enabled before adding optional tools.
- Install only the app for the task you have. Use each project’s official page linked above, and confirm current compatibility and instructions there.
- Configure the protection around a real use case. Select applications for isolation, review network controls before changing them, and decide which data needs encryption or password management.
- Make recovery part of setup. Keep a usable recovery plan for encrypted data and a separate backup of a KeePassXC database.
- Reassess what you actually use. Avoid accumulating security utilities whose settings you do not understand or maintain.
