Task View is Windows 11’s overview for viewing open windows and managing multiple desktops. Open it by selecting the Task View button on the taskbar or pressing Windows key + Tab. The title’s “Task Vie” is a typo; Microsoft calls the feature Task View.
What Task View does
Task View brings your open windows into an overview and gives you access to multiple desktops. A desktop is a separate work area where you can arrange groups of apps or content—for example, one desktop for a project and another for personal tasks. These are workspaces within Windows, not separate physical devices.

Use Task View when you want to see your open windows at a glance, choose a window, or create and switch between desktops. Microsoft explains these multitasking features in its Windows multitasking guide and multiple-desktop instructions.

How to open Task View
- Select the Task View button on the taskbar.
- Or press Windows key + Tab.
If the taskbar button is missing, that does not mean Task View is unavailable: use the keyboard shortcut, or show the button in taskbar settings. Microsoft’s taskbar customization guide explains how to show or hide taskbar items.

Task View and Alt + Tab: which should you use?

Both help you navigate open work. Choose Task View when you need the broader workspace overview; choose Alt + Tab for a quick app switch. Microsoft lists Alt + Tab and other navigation shortcuts in its Windows keyboard shortcuts reference.
Useful shortcuts for multiple desktops
- Windows key + Ctrl + D: Create a new desktop.
- Windows key + Ctrl + Left arrow or Right arrow: Switch between desktops.
- Windows key + Ctrl + F4: Close the current desktop.
