What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First check whether the distortion is audible in Windows playback outside your streaming app. If it is, troubleshoot the Windows audio device; if playback is clean but the stream or recording sounds distorted, focus on the captured source and levels in the app. This split helps avoid changing drivers to solve a mixing problem—or adjusting a stream mix when the Windows output itself is already faulty.
Find where the distortion starts
Play audio outside the streaming app, then compare it with a stream or local recording. If your app offers local audio monitoring, compare that too. This is a diagnostic approach: streaming apps differ, and their monitoring paths may not match what viewers hear.

- Distorted outside the app: Start with the Windows output device, enhancements, format, driver, and audio services.
- Clear outside the app, distorted in the stream or recording: Check which source the app captures, its filters, and the mix level.
- Only one input or app is affected: Test that microphone or captured application on its own before changing unrelated devices.
Note whether the problem is present immediately or appears later. That timing can help you reproduce the symptom, but it does not by itself identify a cause.
Fix distortion in Windows playback
Turn off audio enhancements
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the affected output device and open its audio enhancements control. The exact control can vary by device and driver.
- Turn enhancements off, then play the same audio again.
Microsoft Support identifies enhancements as a possible cause of distortion or crackling on some devices. If the affected sound is from a microphone, select the input device instead and use Windows’ microphone test to record and play a sample before changing app filters.

Try another format offered for the device
- In Settings > System > Sound, select the affected output device and open its advanced settings.
- Choose a different available default format, apply the change, and repeat the same playback test.
Use only options Windows offers for that device. There is no established sample rate or bit depth that prevents distortion across all Windows 11 devices and streaming setups; the useful test is whether a supported alternative changes the symptom.
Update or reinstall the audio driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates, including driver updates.
- If no suitable update appears, open Device Manager, identify the audio device, and check the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and its Windows 11 driver.
- Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific installation instructions, then test playback again.
If the problem began after a driver update, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also includes rolling the driver back. Reinstalling a driver or trying the generic Windows driver may be appropriate later steps, but check device-specific support instructions first.

Restart Windows audio services
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and open Services. - Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Test the same playback again.
Microsoft lists restarting these services as a possible remedy for temporary sound problems. It is not a diagnosis of a particular stream or device fault.
Fix distortion limited to the stream or recording
Check the captured source and level in OBS
In OBS, confirm that the intended microphone or output device is added as an audio source. Reproduce the problem while watching the relevant source and mixer meters. If the sound is distorted in a test recording but clean in Windows playback, focus on the OBS capture and mix path rather than assuming the Windows driver is at fault.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
OBS Project documents that audio above 0 dBFS, the maximum digital level, clips in a stream or recording. If the relevant meter is hitting that ceiling, reduce the offending source or filter gain, or lower the mix level, then make another test recording. The threshold describes digital clipping; it is not evidence that every distorted sound has a level problem.
Check source and synchronization settings
OBS lets you add a microphone or output device as an audio source, so verify that the selected device is the one you mean to capture. OBS also documents a Windows-only device timestamp option intended to attempt to prevent desynchronization. These checks can help identify a source or sync issue, but they do not guarantee a fix for distortion.

If the sound still breaks up
- Repeat the same test after each change, changing one setting at a time so you can tell which change mattered.
- Test Windows playback and the app’s recording separately; a clean result in one path does not prove the other is clean.
- If an update preceded the issue, consider the driver rollback option; otherwise use the exact device maker’s support instructions before trying a generic driver.
- Do not assume that a specific sample rate, bit depth, accessory, or replacement device is a universal fix. The appropriate format depends on the supported device and app requirements, and hardware replacement is only relevant if a specific fault or compatibility need is identified.
