The strongest evidence comes from bounded factory work: a robot handling a particular part at a prepared workstation, with a known workflow and supporting systems. Whether a humanoid is the right tool depends on measured output, reliability, safety, integration effort and cost—not on how human-like it looks.
Where humanoid robots are useful now
The best-supported applications are repetitive tasks in structured environments. A humanoid’s shape may help when a workplace, tools or workstations were designed for people, but that advantage matters only if the robot can perform the task reliably and safely. It does not make the robot broadly adaptable by itself.

Figure 02 handled parts in a BMW factory pilot
BMW says Figure 02 spent ten months at its Plant Spartanburg body shop retrieving and positioning sheet-metal parts for welding. In BMW’s account, the pilot covered more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles, moved over 90,000 components and logged about 1,250 operating hours. BMW also reported about 1.2 million steps and said learned motion sequences transferred from a test environment to line work. These are manufacturer-reported results from a specific pilot, not an independent audit or evidence that the robot can take on arbitrary factory work. BMW describes the site as a highly automated body shop with established robotics infrastructure and a workforce experienced in adopting new technology. BMW’s account of its humanoid robot work gives the site and task context.
AEON’s Leipzig work is an evaluation, not proof of a mature deployment
BMW says Hexagon Robotics’ AEON began operational work at Plant Leipzig in December 2025 after theoretical evaluation and laboratory testing. The company identified high-voltage battery assembly and component production as initial areas to evaluate, while examining workstation adaptations and gathering employee input. BMW’s September 2026 account also described tests planned for April 2026 and a progression into pilot operations in summer 2026; it does not establish whether that planned pilot began. Treat the project as evidence of continued factory evaluation, not as a reported production result.

Warehouse claims need operating conditions
Agility Robotics says its Digit robots have accumulated over 65,000 operational hours across customer sites and reports that Digit reached a 100,000-tote milestone at GXO’s Flowery Branch site at approximately 98% on-task accuracy. Those figures come from the manufacturer’s announcement, which does not provide an independent audit or a full denominator and operating conditions for the accuracy figure. They are relevant as vendor-reported deployment claims, but cannot by themselves establish comparative uptime or performance across warehouses. Agility’s announcement describes the claims.
What limits a humanoid’s usefulness
Task difficulty varies more than the robot’s shape suggests
Fraunhofer’s Capabilities Navigator assesses humanoids across mobility, manipulation, cognition and safety/security, with levels from 0 (not present) to 4 (highly autonomous, comparable to humans or better). Its examples show why a single label such as “factory-ready” can mislead: truck loading puts high demands on manipulation, cognition and safety, while structured machine operation needs less flexibility. Fraunhofer’s evaluation found the Unitree G1 had advanced in mobility but still had substantial development needs for industrial requirements. Fraunhofer’s task-specific capability framework explains the scale.

Runtime, force and security need configuration-specific testing
In a 2026 benchmark, Fraunhofer IPA tested a Unitree G1 EDU-4 delivered in May 2025 and running firmware 1.04. The institute measured a maximum single-charge operating time of 2 hours 49 minutes while stationary and 1 hour 49 minutes in a typical standing-and-walking scenario. In its collision test, forces exceeded 500 newtons. These results apply to that model and configuration, not to every humanoid or to current versions of the G1.
Fraunhofer also found a critical Bluetooth security vulnerability in the tested software that allowed remote control; the institute says the issue has since been resolved. That is a reminder to check the robot’s current software and security posture rather than assume either that the flaw remains or that every system is secure. The institute says humanoid-specific safety standards are not expected until 2028, an expectation rather than a guarantee of publication timing. Its benchmark assesses application-relevant factors including functional safety, cybersecurity, cleanroom suitability, complex capabilities and energy efficiency, with tests such as obstacle detection, failure behavior and power use. Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark account identifies the test configuration and methods.

Mixed, unpredictable work remains a harder case
Gartner identifies limited dexterity, intelligence and adaptability as constraints in mixed-SKU picking, trailer unloading and exception handling. It also cites integration challenges, high upfront and maintenance costs, and battery limitations. Gartner says task-specific polyfunctional robots can offer higher uptime and lower energy use for some warehouse work. These are Gartner’s assessments, not universal results for every task or robot; they point to why a purpose-built machine or a redesigned process may outperform a humanoid in a particular workflow.

- Task structure: Is the work repeatable, with stable objects and clear handoffs, or does it involve frequent exceptions and changing layouts?
- Manipulation and payload: Can the robot grip, position and handle the required objects at the necessary precision and pace?
- Mobility: Does walking through human-designed spaces solve a real constraint, or would a fixed cell, conveyor or wheeled robot do the job more simply?
- Output and uptime: Measure cycle time, completed work, intervention frequency and uptime over representative shifts; do not rely on a short demonstration.
- Safety and recovery: Test behavior around workers, obstacles and faults, and specify how the system stops, alerts staff and resumes after failure.
- Energy and integration: Include runtime, charging, power use and the work needed to connect the robot to existing machines and production or warehouse systems.
- Total cost: Compare the full cost of deployment and maintenance with a task-specific robot or process redesign, against the output each option actually delivers.
Fraunhofer’s benchmark is useful because it breaks capability into application-relevant measures rather than treating humanoid status as a pass/fail label. The right result is task-specific: a robot that can navigate well may still be a poor choice for delicate manipulation, and a successful cell does not establish performance elsewhere.
Do the economics and forecasts support broad adoption?
The UK Government Office for Science’s 2025 assessment gives an estimated cost of $40,000–$150,000 for a humanoid robot. That estimate is not a universal purchase price or a total-cost-of-ownership figure. The assessment also notes uncertainty about cost-effectiveness, safety, standards and public acceptance. The government assessment discusses the broader technical and deployment challenges.

Gartner says humanoids cost multiple times more than task-specific polyfunctional robots while delivering lower throughput and uptime in the comparisons it describes. It does not give a universal total cost of ownership. A buyer therefore needs site-specific figures for utilization, integration, maintenance, energy, output and downtime before a price tag can answer whether deployment makes financial sense.
Gartner’s January 2026 forecast was that fewer than 20 companies would reach live production for manufacturing and supply-chain humanoid use cases by 2028, and fewer than 100 would advance proofs of concept beyond experimentation. It expected most deployments through 2028 to remain in tightly controlled environments. These are forecasts, not observed counts. Gartner analyst Abdil Tunca described the technology as “immature and far from meeting expectations for versatility and cost-effectiveness.” Gartner’s forecast and its scope are set out in its release.
One broader estimate should not be mistaken for a humanoid adoption figure: Anthropic’s September 2026 analysis estimates robots could perform 74% of physical tasks in the United States, representing 34% of working hours, but estimates robots are cost-competitive with people for just 0.3% of work. Those estimates concern robots generally, not humanoids alone. Anthropic points to structured environments, dexterity, human preferences and regulation as adoption constraints. Anthropic’s analysis explains its estimates.

Humanoid robots are useful when a bounded task, a controlled workspace and measured performance line up. Factory pilots show that this is more than a laboratory concept, but the evidence does not yet support treating humanoids as reliable helpers for varied, unscripted work. For a real deployment, the decisive question is whether the robot can safely deliver better total results than a task-specific machine or process change under the same operating conditions.
