Pin apps to the taskbar if you want them close at hand while working with open windows; pin them to Start if you want a larger, more organized collection of shortcuts. You can use both when each location serves a different habit. Microsoft documents the features and steps, but does not claim that either choice is universally faster.

What each location is for
Taskbar: convenient alongside open windows
The taskbar keeps pinned app icons available while you work across open windows. You can drag pinned icons to rearrange them. Right-clicking an app may also open its jump list, giving you shortcuts to recent files or common app features where available. Microsoft describes the taskbar as helping you “launch apps, switch between open windows, and access system features like notifications, search, and the Start menu” in its Customize the Taskbar in Windows guidance.
Start: a place to organize a broader set of shortcuts
Start provides a Pins area as well as an All apps list. You can drag pins to reorder them, and drag one pin over another to create a folder. That makes Start a useful home for shortcuts you want available but do not need displayed on the taskbar. See Microsoft’s Start menu customization steps.

How to pin an app
Pin an app to Start
- Search for the app in Windows.
- Open the app’s context menu and choose Pin to Start.
- To change the order of your pins, drag them. To create a folder, drag one pin onto another.
These options are described in Microsoft Support’s Start menu guidance.
Pin an app to the taskbar
- Search for the app, open its context menu, and choose Pin to taskbar.
- Alternatively, if the app is already open, right-click its taskbar icon and choose Pin to taskbar.
- Drag a pinned icon to rearrange it. Right-click an icon to see its jump list when the app provides one.

Pin to the taskbar using the keyboard
- Open Start and select the app in the pinned section or the All apps list.
- Press Shift+F10 to open the app’s context menu.
- Choose Pin to taskbar.

Pin an app in both places if you use it in different ways—for example, you may want its taskbar icon close by during desktop work and also keep it among a categorized set of Start pins. If having it in both places adds clutter rather than helping, choose the location you naturally reach for.
