Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Snipping Tool seems broken in Windows 11, first check whether the app itself fails or only a keyboard shortcut does. Open it from Start and try a capture; then test the shortcut. That simple split points you toward the right fix without assuming there is one cause for every failure.
Why is my Snipping Tool not working in Windows 11?
“Not working” can mean different things: the app will not open, it opens and closes, a screenshot will not start, the shortcut does nothing, recording is unavailable, or a capture cannot be found afterward. Test Snipping Tool directly before changing settings: select Start, search for Snipping Tool, open it, and choose a new capture. Microsoft documents opening the app from Start as well as using keyboard shortcuts in its Snipping Tool instructions.

- The app opens and captures: investigate the keyboard shortcut or where the image is saved.
- The app opens but capture fails, or it closes: restart Windows, then try the app’s Repair and Reset options.
- Screenshots work but video does not: check the separate recording controls and shortcut.
- The capture appears to work but the file is missing: check auto-save settings, the Screenshots folder, and the clipboard.
Why is Win+Shift+S not working?
Windows+Shift+S opens the screenshot overlay. If Snipping Tool works when launched from Start but this shortcut does not, focus on keyboard settings or a shortcut conflict rather than treating the app as broken.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check whether the Snipping Tool shortcut option is enabled. The exact wording may differ by Windows update.
- Check whether another app or utility is intercepting the shortcut. Microsoft’s Windows Snipping Tool guide identifies both the keyboard setting and possible shortcut overrides as checks.
- If you are pressing the Print Screen key, remember it is not the same as Windows+Shift+S. Print Screen can take a static screen snapshot copied to the clipboard; its behavior depends on its configured setting. Test Windows+Shift+S separately.
Why does Snipping Tool open and then close?
Start with Microsoft’s general Windows app-recovery sequence: restart the PC, try Repair, and use Reset only if Repair does not resolve the problem. These controls may appear under different labels or locations on different Windows builds.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Restart the PC, then open Snipping Tool from Start and test a capture.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Snipping Tool, open its additional or advanced options, and select Repair if available.
- Open the app and test again. If the problem remains, return to its options and select Reset, if available. Reset is a later step, not the first one to try.
Microsoft describes this general recovery path in its guidance on fixing problems with installed or removed programs. If Repair and Reset fail, uninstalling Snipping Tool and installing its latest Microsoft Store version is a possible next step. That Snipping Tool-specific advice appears in a Microsoft Q&A community response; it is community guidance, not a guarantee that reinstalling will fix every case.
Why is screen recording missing in Snipping Tool?
Video recording is a separate function from taking screenshots. Microsoft documents opening the Record control or pressing Windows+Shift+R, then selecting the screen area and starting or stopping the recording.

- Open Snipping Tool directly and look for the Record control.
- If it is available, select it, choose the area to record, and start the capture. You can also test Windows+Shift+R.
- If the Record control is absent or recording fails, note that symptom separately from screenshot capture. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish one Windows build or app-version requirement that explains every missing Record option, so a particular update should not be assumed to be the cause.
Why won’t Snipping Tool save my screenshot?
A capture may be copied to the clipboard or placed in the app for editing without being saved where you expect. Microsoft Support says, “When you capture a snip, it’s automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window where you make changes, save, and share.” Its documentation also says captured snips can be automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and that automatic saving and the default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool settings.
- Open Snipping Tool settings and check whether automatic saving is enabled and which folder is configured.
- Look in the Screenshots folder. When auto-save is enabled, Microsoft’s Windows guide identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the location.
- For a specific destination, use Save as in the Snipping Tool window and select the folder yourself.
- If you only need to paste the image, check the clipboard in the destination app. A clipboard copy is not the same as a saved image file.
Saving behavior and the configured destination are described in Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support page and Windows feature guide.
