For occasional screenshots and straightforward edits, start with Windows 11’s Snipping Tool. Choose ShareX if you regularly need scrolling captures, a configurable editing workflow, or integrated upload actions. Both can also capture video and extract text, so the deciding factor is usually how much control you want over what happens after a capture. This recommendation compares features documented by Microsoft and ShareX, not independently tested speed or reliability.
What each app can do
Windows 11 Snipping Tool
Microsoft documents rectangular, free-form, window, and full-screen screenshot modes. You can open the video capture overlay with Windows + Shift + R, and use Text actions to extract text from an image with OCR. The exact features available can depend on Windows and app updates. ShareX
ShareX lists region and scrolling capture, OCR, screen recording, annotation, image editing, and post-capture and upload actions on its official site. Its broader workflow can be useful if you want to configure what happens after taking a screenshot, including editing or sending it to a destination. Check the current settings and destinations before relying on upload actions.

Where Snipping Tool’s newer features fit
Microsoft documents OCR text actions alongside screenshot and video capture. Its Windows Experience Blog also says that Perfect screenshot is exclusive to Windows 11 AI+ PCs, and that a color picker was added for Windows 11 PCs in a post dated July 22, 2025. Perfect screenshot should not be treated as a feature available on every Windows 11 device. Read the Windows Experience Blog post for those device qualifications.

Microsoft Learn documents a Snipping Tool launch protocol for image and video capture, including video with audio and options for automatic saving. That is mainly relevant to developers and automation authors; it is not, by itself, a reason most people should prefer Snipping Tool. See Microsoft Learn’s launch-protocol documentation.

- Choose Snipping Tool if your usual task is a quick screenshot, basic markup, text extraction, or an occasional recording with minimal setup.
- Choose ShareX if scrolling capture, more configurable annotation and editing, or a capture-to-upload workflow is central to your work.
- Try the actual workflow in your environment if you need consistent team conventions, privacy controls, or dependable operation in a particular application. Product feature pages do not establish comparative reliability or usability in your setup.
There is no documented head-to-head study in the cited sources establishing which app is faster, more reliable, or easier to use. The practical recommendation is therefore about documented feature fit, not a performance ranking.
