What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On some fresh Windows 11 installations, clicking the small “Learn more” link beneath “Sign-in options” on the Microsoft-account setup page has reportedly opened local-account creation instead. Click that explanatory link—not the larger “Learn More” button lower on the page. The behavior has been observed in reported tests, but it is unofficial and not confirmed for every Windows 11 edition or build.
Which link may bypass Microsoft sign-in?
During setup, continue through the usual screens, connect to the internet, and reach “Let’s add your Microsoft account.” Under “Sign-in options,” look for the small “Learn more” hyperlink in the explanatory paragraph. The reported behavior is tied to that link, not the larger “Learn More” button near the bottom of the page.

Windows Latest reported that clicking the small link advanced its test system to “Who’s going to use this device?”, where setup offered local-account creation. Follow the screens to enter a username, password, and answers to three security questions. See Windows Latest’s September 13, 2026 report for the observed behavior.
How widely has it been tested?
Windows Latest said it tested fresh Windows 11 Home installation media in a virtual machine. PC Gamer later reported independently replicating the behavior on a fresh, non-Insider Windows 11 installation. Those tests show the behavior was not limited to the initial preview test, but they do not establish that it works on every edition, build, or current installation image. PC Gamer’s account of its replication describes the second test.

Treat this as an observed setup quirk, not a Microsoft-supported feature or a guaranteed workaround. Windows setup can change, so the link may behave differently or stop leading to local-account creation.
What changes if you use a local account?
A local account is specific to that Windows device and does not require an internet connection to sign in to it. A Microsoft account uses credentials shared with Microsoft services and can connect Windows to cloud features such as settings and file synchronization across devices. The better fit depends on whether you prefer a device-specific sign-in or want Microsoft services and synced settings to follow you.

Microsoft documents the differences and explains how to switch account types later in Settings in its guide to changing from a local account to a Microsoft account in Windows. The company recommends a Microsoft account for service integration, security, and synchronization; a local account remains an option for people who prefer device-specific credentials.
Why this is not an official setup option
In an October 6, 2025 announcement for Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.6772, Microsoft said it was removing known methods of creating local accounts during OOBE. It explained that those methods could skip critical setup screens and leave a device incompletely configured. The announcement concerned known mechanisms in that Insider preview; it does not address or approve the separately reported “Learn more” link behavior from September 2026. Read the Windows Insider Build 26220.6772 announcement for Microsoft’s stated rationale.

Does this require a new installation?
No new purchase is needed to try the reported click during setup on a PC that already has Windows installation media or is being set up from scratch. The tests described by Windows Latest and PC Gamer used fresh installations, so they do not establish whether the same route appears when setting up a preinstalled device. Microsoft distinguishes setup on a preinstalled device from installing Windows yourself in its Windows setup guidance. For the terminology around OOBE, see Microsoft’s documentation on booting Windows to Audit Mode or OOBE.
